The Technical Speech Communication Course: A View From The Field, Andrew D. Wolvin, Diana Corley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Technical speech communication is analyzed as a basic course designed for students preparing for professional and technical careers. The article argues that communication training is increasingly important in fields such as business, health, education, agriculture, and technology, where workers rely on listening, interpersonal interaction, small group communication, informative briefings, and presentations. It describes a career focused course model that connects communication theory and practice to students’ major fields through interviews, field specific research, panels, and briefings. Survey responses from former students are used to evaluate communication activities and skills most frequently needed in work settings. The article contributes to communication …

Decrescenzo

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report discusses research in three areas of organic synthesis: The synthesis of potential insecticides; the reinvestigation of the reaction of hexamethylphosphoramide with ketoximes; and the regioselective fluoroalkoxylation and polyfluoroalkoxylation of activated dihalobenzenes and dihaloheterocycles. In Part I, a series of N-(4-heteroaryloxybenzoyl)-N'-(2, 3-dichlorobenzoyl) hydrazines are synthesized, and attempts at cyclic dehydration to the corresponding 2, 5-disubstituted-1, 3, 4-oxadiazoles are discussed. In Part II, the synthesis of N, N-dimethyl-N'-aryl amidines by the reaction of aryl alkyl and diaryl ketoximes with HMPA is discussed. A Biosystematic Study Of The Fern Genus Lygodium In Eastern North America, Violet M. Brown

The mainly tropical genus Lygodium differs from other ferns in that the fronds are indeterminate and are vine-like. A single species, L. palmatum is native in temperate North America. The temperate Asian L. japonicum is naturalized throughout much of the southeastern United States. About twenty years ago, L. microphyllum was introduced into South Florida and is now naturalized in several counties. The present study documents differences among spores and their generation, development of sporophytes from the fertilized egg, and in flavonoid chemistry. Hybridization experiments showed a strong possibility for cross fertility between species. Experiments with prothallial development and differentiation revealed …

The operation and maintenance of highways contributes a variety of pollutants to surface and subsurface waters. Solids, heavy metals, nutrients, oil and grease, pesticides and bacteria can all be associated with highway runoff. Although the full extent of the effect of all these runoff constituents upon the quality of surrounding waters is not well defined, this study will mainly concentrate on nutrient contaminants (essentially phosphorus). The last decade has seen increasing efforts in research and development to abate contaminant discharges from highway runoff using a number of treatment facilities such as swale and detention/retention ponds. A Comparison Of Two Techniques For Estimating The Travel Time Of An Acoustic Wavefront Between Two Receiving Sensors, Frank J. Montalbano

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In recent years the United States Navy has concentrated most of its Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) research and development efforts toward passive sonar. Its ability to locate enemy targets without being detected gives the passive sonar system a supreme strategic advantage over its active counterpart. One aspect of passive sonar signal processing is the time delay estimation of an underwater acoustic wavefront. From this estimation the location and velocity of the radiating source (target) can then be determined. This report compares two popular methods of estimating time delay utilizing computer simulations of each: the cross correlator and the beamformer.
