Protein Concentration Elevations In Mouse Lungs Following Sudden Transient Cephalad (+Gz) Acceleration, Charles J. Gutierrez

Laboratory and feral lineages of mice were subjected to cephalad (+G_Z) accelerations, for 1.8 seconds, aboard a solid fuel rocket. Spectrophotometric analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage retrieved post launch revealed significant (p < .001) elevations of protein in the lungs of experimental mice. Sudden transient imposition of a mean +G_Z acceleration of 6.22 ± .47 (SD) G, at lift-off, may have induced hypervolemia of basilar pulmonary microvasculature with concomitant migration of fluid and protein from intravascular to juxta-alveolar perivascular compartments. Exudates may have entered bronchiolar airways subsequently gravitating toward alveoli.

Obesity constitutes one of America's major health problems. It has been estimated that there are 40 to 80 million Americans who are considered obese (Stuart & Davis, 1972). When 20% above ideal weight is used as a criterion of overweight, it is approximated that 25% to 45% of American adults fall into this category (Rodin, 1977).

There is a sex difference in the prevalence of obesity. While some studies suggest that biological factors predispose females toward obesity (Stuart & Jacobson, 1979), other studies attribute the sex differences to social factors (Hall & Havassy 1981; Wooley, Wooley, & Dyrenforth 1979a; Zegman …

Surgical Sterilization Of Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella Val.), David H. Clippinger

In November, 1983, 93 sexually immature and 33 mature grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.) were surgically sterilized by clipping the gonaduct or removing a section of the ovaries of testes through a ventral incision between the pelvic girdle and the vent. No mortality occurred from this procedure. After six months (May, 1984), 95.7% of the immature and 100% of the mature grass carp had at least some gonadal tissue regeneration. Fifty-nine percent of the immature fish regenerated a pathway for the eggs or milt to enter the environment. Artificial spawning of the mature female grass carp was 66.7% successful. Over …

This research addresses two distinct areas of synthetic organic chemistry: the use of phase transfer catalysts for the fluoroalkoxylation of activated haloaromatic and haloheteroaromatic systems, as well as the Grignard addition and sodium cyanoborohydride reduction of aryl chloropropeniminium salts. In Part I of this research, a number of macrocyclic- and linear polytethers were studied as phase transfer catalysts in the nucleophilic aromatic substitution of haloaromitc systems. The most effective catalyst was determined to be poly(ethylene glycol)-8000 and the reaction conditions were optimized for this catalyst. Subsequently isomer reactivity, effects of activating groups, effects of leaving groups, and nucleophiles were studied …

This report includes the determination of activity and possible mode of action for a group of potential new insecticides. The biological screening procedure was developed using Drosophila melanogaster as the test organism while Musca domestica was used for mode of action assays. The percent kill for each compound is based on the number of eggs placed on media containing the insecticide minus the number of adults enclosed as compared to the control media reared flies. Observations were made on all stages from eggs through adults to determine time of death and if any malformations were present. These observations aided in …

Recent advances in activated sludge facilities operations utilize sludge recycle flow rate control to minimize adverse effects on the clarifier during peak solids loading situations. Although this control action is directed at the thickening function, there has been speculation that the elevated recycle rates may be responsible for an increased effluent solids concentration. To evaluate the significance of recycle rate to the steady-state effluent suspended solids concentration, identical side-by-side settling columns were operated with recycle rates spanning the range of normal practice. This article addresses the question of what kinds of scholarly work are most suitable for publication in communication studies, with particular attention to the needs of young scholars and those who mentor them. It defines publishable scholarship as “news” for the profession: work grounded in genuine intellectual curiosity, connected to significant conversations in the field, and willing to take calculated risks. The article distinguishes between general qualities of newsworthy research and more specific topics for future inquiry. Its proposed research agenda centers on symbolically negotiated patterns in human communication, including perspective-shifting, infinite regress, hypostatizing, cultural enactment, and learning. This article responds to research on classroom climate for women by considering how sexism operates specifically within speech communication. It identifies three areas of disciplinary concern: public speaking and debate, public address and rhetoric, and communication as a medium through which discrimination is enacted. The article argues that women’s participation as speakers has historically conflicted with conventional gender expectations, making public speaking and debate especially difficult contexts for women students. It also critiques the teaching of public address, noting that speech anthologies and curricula have often excluded women rhetors and thereby reinforced the idea that public eloquence is primarily male. …

This response essay addresses sexism in higher education as a deeply embedded cultural pattern that shapes classroom and professional interactions. Responding to work on the “chilly climate” for women, the essay argues that denial is a major barrier to recognizing and changing sexist behavior. It discusses ways male faculty may view women students and colleagues through sexualized or dominance-based assumptions, and it emphasizes that advanced education does not necessarily prevent discriminatory behavior.
