This article addresses the challenges of defining liberal education and the place of journalism and mass communication within it. It reviews competing conceptions of liberal education as content, faculty intent, or student outcomes, and argues that professional fields can make meaningful contributions to liberal learning through skills such as communication, contextual awareness, adaptability, and critical inquiry. The discussion critiques the tendency of traditional disciplines to resist emerging fields and the tendency of professional programs to overemphasize narrow vocational goals. Idiosyncratic Item Selection Effects: Do They Produce The Incongruity Effect?/, Susan E. Haynes

This study examined the recall of subject-generated and experimenter-provided target words as a function of whether or not the encoding cue was congruous or incongruous. Previous research has established that, for experimenter-provided items, congruous targets are recalled better than incongruous targets. However, in the case of self-generated targets, some researchers have reported a reversal of this effect ("the incongruity effect") while others have not. The subjects were 55 undergraduate psychology students from the University of Central Florida.

In the experimenter-provided condition, subjects received congruous and incongruous question stems with the target word written in directly below the question. In the …

Variation In Female Somatic Condition And Its Relationship To Reproduction In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Pisces: Poeciliidae), Richard Eugene Smith

Seasonal and gestational variation in the somatic and reproductive condition of females was determined for two east-central Florida populations of the livebearing fish Poecilia latipinna. Females were sampled monthly between January 1985 and January 1986 at Badge Station (BDGST) and Titusville Ditch (TDTCH) study sites. In addition, collections were made at approximately 8 day intervals in April and August. Somatic condition was determined by calculating index values for dry weight (somatic tissue minus water), lipid, and protein from overall regression equations relating these components to female body size. Significant seasonal variation in somatic condition existed within the two study sites. …

Lymphocyte Subpopulations And Other Laboratory Parameters In Patients With The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Aids) And Related Conditions, Steven C. Shivers

Patients with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), AIDS-Related Complex (ARC) and other high-risk individuals were evaluated for lymphocyte subsets and serum levels of IgG, IgA, IgM, complement C3 and C4, B2-rnicroglobulin, circulating immune complexes and antibodies to HIV (1). Patients with other immunologic diseases not related to AIDS and healthy individuals not at risk for AIDS were also included in the study. AIDS-related patients overall showed significant (p < .05) relative and absolute decreases helper/inducer T cells, and relative and absolute increases in suppressor/ cytotoxic T cells, resulting in dramatic decreases in helper to suppressor ratios. Relative decreases in total T cells and increases in B cells and natural killer (NK) cells were also observed in some AIDSrelated patients. Four patients not at risk for AIDS had borderline and possibly false positive HIV antibody results. Antibody levels in one of these patients gradually changed to negative after a period of a few weeks. AIDS-related patients overall were also found to have significant (p < .05) increases in serum levels of imrnunoglobulins, B2-microglobulin, and circulating immune complexes. Significant changes in serum levels of Complement C3 and C4 were not observed.

Learning English Language And Literature In Saudi Arabian Universities: Students' Perceptions Of Successful And Unsuccessful Methodologies, Safa Mansouri

This study focuses on identifying students' perceptions of the most successful and least successful methodologies of teaching/ learning- English language and literature in Saudi Arabian universities. The study employed a questionnaire format, which was distributed to the English Departments of three Saudi Arabian universities and one college for women, to gather data. Data analysis revealed that students had many problems, especially with Old and Middle English literature. Language problems, cultural differences, and unfamiliarity with the literary or historical backgrounds of the English literature were cited as the major obstacles to learning. Ground surface spiders were pitfall-trapped every two months in pond pine, sand pine scrub, and flatwoods plant communities on the University of Central Florida campus near Orlando from May, 1983 to March, 1984. Eight-two species and 2,326 individuals were collected: 57 species and 1,094 individuals in pond pine, 42 species and 851 individuals in sand pine scrub, and 48 species and 381 individuals in flatwoods community. Spider diversity was greatest in pond pine, followed by sand pine scrub, and then flatwoods community. Similarity in spider species was greatest between pond pine and flatwoods, followed by sand pine scrub and flatwoods, …
