Energy Savings From Repair Of Uncontrolled Airflow In Eighteen Small Commercial Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, Charles Withers, Jr. Jan 1996

Energy Savings From Repair Of Uncontrolled Airflow In Eighteen Small Commercial Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, Charles Withers, Jr.

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Uncontrolled airflow, including duct leakage, pressure imbalances caused by closed interior doors, and exhaust/intake airflow imbalance, was characterized in 70 commercial buildings. In 18 of these buildings, uncontrolled airflows were repaired and energy savings from these repairs were monitored. In most buildings the retrofit was duct repair. In other cases, outdoor airflow was reduced and return air transfers were provided. Cooling energy use was reduced by an average 15.1% in these 18 buildings. With an average repair cost of $455 and average cooling energy savings of $195 per year, uncontrolled airflow retrofits proved to be very cost-effective. Various factors indicate …

Scientific Management In Higher Education: Concerns And Using Collaborative School Management To Improve Communication, Chas Koermer, John Petelle Jan 1996

Scientific Management In Higher Education: Concerns And Using Collaborative School Management To Improve Communication, Chas Koermer, John Petelle

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses problems associated with using scientific management in the improvement of communication in higher education in the U.S. Within the spectrum of higher education, it is reasonable to assume that a degree of hierarchical control permeates. That is, every member reports to some higher authority and receives direction from the authority. The faculty member is involved in roles of both management and governance requiring participation in both endeavors. This approach to management is also countenanced in the academic arena exemplified by verbal directives. The paper bureaucracy is another burdensome aspect of scientific management that exists in higher education.

A Comparison Of Leadership Practices Used By Male And Female Communication Department Chairpersons, Trudy L. Hanson Jan 1996

A Comparison Of Leadership Practices Used By Male And Female Communication Department Chairpersons, Trudy L. Hanson

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article compares the leadership practices used by male and female communication department chairpersons in the U.S. The position of academic department chair has the potential to be one which most influences faculty, and yet it remains the most underrated position in a college or university. The problem to be explored in leadership in higher education is the participation of women. Research in the communication behavior of men and women managers has revealed that neither men nor women seemed to favor characteristics defined as feminine. Women in higher education seem to face a much more difficult path to tenure than …

Site-Selective Excitation And Polarized Absorption Spectra Of Nd3+ In Sr-5(Po4)(3)F And Ca-5(Po4)(3)F, John B. Gruber, Clyde A. Morrison, Michael D. Seltzer, Andrew O. Wright, Melvin P. Nadler, Toomas H. Allik, J. Andrew Hutchinson, Bruce H. T. Chai

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Polarized absorption and fluorescence spectra were analyzed to establish individual energy (Stark) levels of Nd3+ ions in host crystals of Sr-5(PO4)(3)F (SFAP) and Ca-5(PO4)(3)F (FAP). Site-selective excitation and fluorescence facilitated differentiation between Nd3+ ions in emitting sites-associated with 1.06 mu m stimulated emission, and nonemitting Nd3+ ions in other sites. Measurements were made on samples containing different concentrations of Nd3+ at 4 K and higher temperatures. Substitution of Nd3+ for Sr2+ or Ca2+ was accompanied by passive charge compensation during crystal growth. Crystal-field splitting calculations were performed according to site for Stark levels of Nd3+ ions identified spectroscopically. We obtained …

Qualitative And Quantitative Studies On Chironomidae (Diptera) And Selected Physico-Chemical Parameters In Two Tributaries Of The Wekiva River, Central Florida, Richard J. Lobinske, Arshad Ali, I. Jack Stout

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Aquatic midge (Chironomidae: Diptera) larval densities, 24-h adult emergence, and larval and adult dry biomass were estimated monthly for two years in two tributaries of the Wekiva River, central Florida, along with selected physico-chemical water parameters. Twenty-four genera of midges were identified in Blackwater Creek and 26 in Rock Springs Run, with subfamily Chironominae dominating the midge fauna. Larval densities in the former stream ranged from 56 to 757 per m(2), with 24-h periods adult emergence ranging from 0 to 95 per m(2). The latter stream supported 138 to 1277 larvae per m(2) with 0 to 68 emergent adults per …

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Nymphal densities and size frequency distribution of Hexagenia limbata (Serville), a burrowing mayfly, were determined monthly for two years in two tributaries of the Wekiva River, central Florida, along with selected physico-chemical water parameters. Blackwater Creek supported a mean number of 112 (range 0-434) and Rock Springs Run 89 nymphs per m(2) (range 11-258). The mayfly species displayed a univoltine life history with adult emergence peaking in August. Productivity in Blackwater Creek was estimated at 4.688 g per m(2) and in Rock Springs Run at 3.123 g per m(2). Productivity/biomass ratios were estimated at 4.09 and 4.59 in Blackwater Creek …

The Effects Of Glucose And Fatty Acids On Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal Using A Sequencing Batch Reactor, Tarek Zaki Khouri Jan 1996

The Effects Of Glucose And Fatty Acids On Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal Using A Sequencing Batch Reactor, Tarek Zaki Khouri

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Two anaerobic/aerobic sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were used to evaluate enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The first SBR, designated the Glucose SBR, was run for a period of four months. It received a synthetic wastewater plus glucose as a supplemental carbon source. The second SBR, the Isovaleric SBR, was run for three months. During the first month, isovaleric acid was its supplemental carbon source while for the remaining time period, no supplemental carbon source was added to the feed. Steady-state data from the SBR receiving isovalerate yielded the highest phosphorus (P) removals observed during the study, with a mixed liquor …

Smarts2, A Simple Model Of The Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Of Sunshine, Florida Solar Energy Center, Christian Gueymard Dec 1995

Smarts2, A Simple Model Of The Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Of Sunshine, Florida Solar Energy Center, Christian Gueymard

FSEC Energy Research Center®

An upgraded spectral radiation model called SMARTS2 is introduced. The solar shortwave direct beam irradiance is calculated from spectral transmittance functions for the main extinction processes in the cloudless atmosphere: Rayleigh scattering, aerosol extinction, and absorption by ozone, uniformly mixed gases, water vapor, and nitrogen dioxide. Temperature-dependent or pressure-dependent extinction coefficients have been developed for all these absorbing gases, based on recent spectroscopic data obtained either directly from the experimental literature or, in a preprocessed form, from MODTRAN2, a state-of-the-art rigorous code. The NO2 extinction effect, in both the UV and visible, is introduced for the first time in a …
