Traditional And Applied Graduate Education: Special Challenges, William G. Powers, Don Love Jan 1999

Traditional And Applied Graduate Education: Special Challenges, William G. Powers, Don Love

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article addresses the difference in philosophy and instruction methods in communication graduate programs of the traditional and applied graduate education. Both the traditional and the applied programs are equal in intellectual challenges but with significant differences recognized and accounted for in faculty decision-making associated with course selection, content, and instructional strategy. Graduate programs that contain elements of both models are the more common in our field and face special challenges. In conclusion, administrators must establish and focus upon mutual respect for the commonalities held by the two approaches to graduate education and the support they have for each other, …

Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Lee Ronald, William Seiler

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article reflects on the vulnerabilities and strengths of communication departments at the University of Nebraska. The relatively small size of communication departments makes them especially vulnerable to administrative budget cutters. For a complex set of reasons, particular disciplines have become defining elements of universities in the U.S. Unfortunately, communication departments have not achieved such status. The professional organizations need to do more than offer the occasional workshop, they ought to make a concerted effort to help communications departments maximize the discipline's opportunity and make the field of communication valuable to students and become ever more essential to the university.

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Investigations Of The Chemistries Of Soils, T. L. Barr, E. E. Hoppe, S. Hardcastle, S. Seal Jan 1999

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Investigations Of The Chemistries Of Soils, T. L. Barr, E. E. Hoppe, S. Hardcastle, S. Seal

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The present study continues our x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) or electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis investigations of silicate systems, particularly those in contact with biological materials. In the present case, the investigations are extended to a detailed analysis for a wide variety of soil samples extracted from different locations around the world. The samples were selected from relatively pristine sites, pressed into wafers, and were examined without further modification. All of the materials were insulators and therefore analysis required extensive use of the electron flood gun. Careful XPS chemical shift assignments have been achieved for many silicate minerals. These have …

Invariant Painleve Analysis And Coherent Structures Of Two Families Of Reaction-Diffusion Equations, Ugur Tanriver, S. Roy Choudhury Jan 1999

Invariant Painleve Analysis And Coherent Structures Of Two Families Of Reaction-Diffusion Equations, Ugur Tanriver, S. Roy Choudhury

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Exact closed-form coherent structures (pulses/fronts/domain walls) having the form of complicated traveling waves are constructed for two families of reaction-diffusion equations by the use of invariant Painleveacute analysis. These analytical solutions, which are derived directly from the underlying PDE's, are investigated in the light of restrictions imposed by the ODE that any traveling wave reduction of the corresponding PDE must satisfy. In particular, it is shown that the coherent structures (a) asymptotically satisfy the ODE governing traveling wave reductions, and (b) are accessible to the PDE from compact support initial conditions. The solutions are compared with each other, and with …

The Effect Of Beach Nourishment On Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) Nesting And Reproductive Success At Sebastian Inlet, Florida, Richard Michael Herren Jan 1999

The Effect Of Beach Nourishment On Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) Nesting And Reproductive Success At Sebastian Inlet, Florida, Richard Michael Herren

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Beach nourishment has become common in Florida and it occurs on beaches that are major loggerhead (Caretta caretta) nesting grounds. Despite efforts to use beach-quality sand, nourishment sand may be different in grain size, moisture content, shear resistance and temperature when compared to native sand. Two main aspects of loggerhead nesting may be affected by nourishment. First, nourishment may reduce nesting success [(female nesting emergences/ female total emergences) X 100] due to physical barriers (i.e., scarps or steep cliffs) that can impede gravid females. Second, nourishment may reduce reproductive success {i.e., hatching success) by altering the nestsand environment. The objective …

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel Jan 1999

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method has gained tremendous popularity in the past decade as a tool for solving Maxwell's equations. Phased Array Antennas find several applications including mobile communications ( cellular, personal communication systems and networks), satellite communications, global positioning system (GPS), aeronautical and radar systems. This dissertation describes the application of the FDTD method for calculating broadband characteristics of finite-sized phased array antennas consisting of microstrip elements fed with coaxial probes.

The characterization of such antennas is dependent upon the development of simulation tools that can accurately model general topologies including wires, dielectrics, conductors lumped elements and metallic strips. …
