Marker Free Transgenic Plants: Engineering The Chloroplast Genome Without The Use Of Antibiotic Selection, Henry Daniell Sep 2010

Marker Free Transgenic Plants: Engineering The Chloroplast Genome Without The Use Of Antibiotic Selection, Henry Daniell

UCF Patents

The present invention provides for a method to circumvent the problem of using antibiotic resistant selectable markers. In particular, target plants are transformed using a plastid vector which contains heterologous DNA sequences coding for a phytotoxin detoxifying enzyme or protein. The selection process involves converting a antibiotic-free phytotoxic agent by the expressed phytotoxin detoxifying enzyme or protein to yield a nontoxic compound. The invention provides for various methods to use antibiotic-free selection in chloroplast transformation.

Weighted Saw Reflector Gratings For Orthogonal Frequency Coded Saw Id Tags And Sensors, Donald Malocha, Derek Puccio Aug 2010

Weighted Saw Reflector Gratings For Orthogonal Frequency Coded Saw Id Tags And Sensors, Donald Malocha, Derek Puccio

UCF Patents

Weighted surface acoustic wave reflector gratings for coding identification tags and sensors to enable unique sensor operation and identification for a multi-sensor environment. In an embodiment, the weighted reflectors are variable while in another embodiment the reflector gratings are apodized. The weighting technique allows the designer to decrease reflectivity and allows for more chips to be implemented in a device and, consequently, more coding diversity. As a result, more tags and sensors can be implemented using a given bandwidth when compared with uniform reflectors. Use of weighted reflector gratings with OFC makes various phase shifting schemes possible, such as in-phase …

Excitation Band-Gap Tuning Of Dopant Based Quantum Dots With Core-Inner Shell-Outer Shell Div, Swadeshmukul Santra, Soumitra Kar Aug 2010

Excitation Band-Gap Tuning Of Dopant Based Quantum Dots With Core-Inner Shell-Outer Shell Div, Swadeshmukul Santra, Soumitra Kar

UCF Patents

A composition and method for fabricating and tuning a dopant based core-shell semiconductor having a quantum dot core composed of an alloy of cadmium sulfide (CdS) and zinc sulfide (ZnS) as semi-conductor materials include a dopant of maganese (Mn) added to the core and outer shell of zinc sulfide (ZnS). The dopant based core/shell quantum dot semiconductor of the present invention allows the fine tuning of an excitation band-gap, covering a wide range (from 2.4 eV to approximately 4 eV). When doped with Mn, these alloy Qdots emit bright yellow/orange light. Tuning of the exicitation band is accomplished by changing …

Plastid Genetic Engineering Via Somatic Embryogenisis, Henry Daniell, Shashi Kumar, Shashi Kumar

UCF Patents

A method of transforming plant plastids and regenerating fertile transplastomic plants by somatic embryogenesis is disclosed. The method involves transforming a plant plastid in a plant cell capable of being regenerated through somatic embryogenesis with a plastid expression cassette comprising one or more selectable marker genes that express in both green and non-green tissue and in light and dark conditions wherein the selectable marker plant cell is cultured in the presence of the plant cell to a selection agent. The transplastomic plant cell is cultured in the presence of the selection agent under conditions to cause the formation of a …

Matched Optical Waveforms For Detection And Identification Of Biological Pathogens., Peter Delfyett, Geoffrey Burdge, John Desalvo, Bruce Fitzgerald, Andreas Leven

UCF Patents

A method is provided for identifying a contaminant in a gaseous space. The method includes: generating a broadband optical waveform; shaping the optical waveform to match an expected waveform for a known contaminant; and transmitting the shaped optical waveform towards an unknown contaminant. Upon receiving a reflected optical waveform from the unknown contaminant, determining whether the unknown contaminant correlates to the known contaminant based on the reflected waveform.

Carbon Nanotube Collimators: Fabrications And Applications, Lee Chow, Guang Chai, Thomas Schenkel

UCF Patents

Apparatus, methods, systems and devices for fabricating individual CNT collimators. Micron size fiber coated CNT samples are synthesized with chemical vapor deposition method and then the individual CNT collimators are fabricated with focused ion beam technique. Unfocused electron beams are successfully propagated through the CNT collimators. The CNT nano-collimators are used for applications including single ion implantation and in high-energy physics, and allow rapid, reliable testing of the transmission of CNT arrays for transport of molecules.

Expression Of Human Serum Albumin Insulin In Plastids (Cip2), Henry Daniell, Myung Ok Byung, Seung-Bum Lee Jun 2010

Expression Of Human Serum Albumin Insulin In Plastids (Cip2), Henry Daniell, Myung Ok Byung, Seung-Bum Lee

UCF Patents

Transgenic chloroplast technology could provide a viable solution to the production of Insulin-like Growth Factor I (IGF-I), Human Serum Albumin (HSA), or interferons (IFN) because of hyper-expression capabilities, ability to fold and process eukaryotic proteins with disulfide bridges (thereby eliminating the need for expensive post-purification processing). Tobacco is an ideal choice because of its large biomass, ease of scale-up (million seeds per plant), genetic manipulation and impending need to explore alternate uses for this hazardous crop. Therefore, all three human proteins will be expressed as follows: a) Develop recombinant DNA vectors for enhanced expression via tobacco chloroplast genomes b) generate …
