An Unsupervised Consensus Control Chart Pattern Recognition Framework, Siavash Haghtalab
An Unsupervised Consensus Control Chart Pattern Recognition Framework, Siavash Haghtalab
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Early identification and detection of abnormal time series patterns is vital for a number of manufacturing. Slide shifts and alterations of time series patterns might be indicative of some anomaly in the production process, such as machinery malfunction. Usually due to the continuous flow of data monitoring of manufacturing processes requires automated Control Chart Pattern Recognition(CCPR) algorithms. The majority of CCPR literature consists of supervised classification algorithms. Less studies consider unsupervised versions of the problem. Despite the profound advantage of unsupervised methodology for less manual data labeling their use is limited due to the fact that their performance is not …
Automatic Detection Of Brain Functional Disorder Using Imaging Data, Soumyabrata Dey
Automatic Detection Of Brain Functional Disorder Using Imaging Data, Soumyabrata Dey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recently, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is getting a lot of attention mainly for two reasons. First, it is one of the most commonly found childhood behavioral disorders. Around 5-10% of the children all over the world are diagnosed with ADHD. Second, the root cause of the problem is still unknown and therefore no biological measure exists to diagnose ADHD. Instead, doctors need to diagnose it based on the clinical symptoms, such as inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity, which are all subjective. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data has become a popular tool to understand the functioning of the brain such …
Nano-Pipette As Nanoparticle Analyzer And Capillary Gated Ion Transistor, Yauheni Rudzevich
Nano-Pipette As Nanoparticle Analyzer And Capillary Gated Ion Transistor, Yauheni Rudzevich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ability to precisely count inorganic and organic nanoparticles and to measure their size distribution plays a major role in various applications such as drug delivery, nanoparticles counting, and many others. In this work I present a simple resistive pulse method that allows translocations, counting, and measuring the size and velocity distribution of silica nanoparticles and liposomes with diameters from 50 nm to 250 nm. This technique is based on the Coulter counter technique, but has nanometer size pores. It was found that ionic current drops when nanoparticles enter the nanopore of a pulled micropipette, producing a clear translocation signal. …
A Spatial Analysis Of Chachapoya Mortuary Practices At La Petaca, Chachapoyas, Peru, Lori Epstein
A Spatial Analysis Of Chachapoya Mortuary Practices At La Petaca, Chachapoyas, Peru, Lori Epstein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diversity of Chachapoya mortuary practices is not well understood archaeologically, even though the region has received some attention for the monumental constructions and visually striking mortuary complexes located high on open cliff faces. This may be due to the difficult accessibility and often poor state of preservation consistent with many Chachapoya mortuary and occupation sites. This thesis reconstructs mortuary practices at La Petaca in the Chachapoyas region of Peru, applying paleodemographic and GIS methodological approaches to facilitate and improve the bioarchaeological study of commingled skeletal remains in an open, disturbed communal funerary context. Research focused on SUP CF-01, a natural …

Hexavalent chromium is an extremely carcinogenic chemical that has been widely produced in the United States. This has led to major waste contamination and pollution throughout the country. According to the Environmental Working Group Hexavalent chromium has been found in 89% of city tap water. Most people believe they are safe using regular home filter systems however that is not true. A more expensive ion exchange water treatment unit is required. Therefore to protect yourselves from this carcinogenic metal a reliable test is required. In this study we have developed a Zinc Sulfide Manganese doped Quantum Rod technology to detect …

The goal of improving student achievement is of paramount interest to all public schools. The focus of this research was to determine the difference between inquiry based teaching strategies and student achievement. Additionally, the researcher investigated the origin of inquiry based teaching knowledge and International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP) affiliation. IBPYP affiliation was studied due to the nature of the IBPYP as an inquiry based philosophy of teaching. The McGill Strategic Demands of Inquiry Questionnaire (MSDIQ) was used to determine teacher beliefs of inquiry based teaching strategies. Student achievement was measured using Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test 2.0 (FCAT 2.0) …
Preparation, Characterization, And Delivery Of Antibodies Binding To A Model Oncogenic Rna, Human Initiator Trna, Jennifer Archer
Preparation, Characterization, And Delivery Of Antibodies Binding To A Model Oncogenic Rna, Human Initiator Trna, Jennifer Archer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) account for a higher percent of the genome than coding mRNAs, and are implicated in human disease such as cancer, neurological, cardiac and many others. While the majority of ncRNAs involved in disease were originally attributed to a class of RNAs called micro RNAs (miRNAs) with a small size of only about 19 -24 base pairs, emerging research has now demonstrated a class of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that have a size of over 200 base pairs to be responsible for gene regulation and other functional roles and have also found to contribute to pathogenesis in humans. …
A Phenomenological Analysis Of Undergraduate Teaching In The United States And The United Kingdom From The Perspective Of Current And Former Exchange Students, Barry Griffiths
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While once almost indistinguishable, the systems of higher education in the United States and the United Kingdom have diverged during the past 200 years to the point where today there are few similarities. However, due to increasing globalization and the growing ubiquity of the internet, many contemporary issues in higher education are often faced by institutions across the globe. After detailing the historical role of scholarship and teaching in the two countries, this study concentrates on two aspects that have been extensively researched in recent years, namely the role of technology in the classroom and the balance that many modern …
The Role Of Lim Kinase 1 And Its Substrates In Cell Cycle Progression, Lisa Ritchey
The Role Of Lim Kinase 1 And Its Substrates In Cell Cycle Progression, Lisa Ritchey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
LIM Kinase 1 (LIMK1), a modulator of actin and microtubule dynamics, has been shown to be involved in cell cycle progression. In this study we examine the role of LIMK1 in G1 phase and mitosis. We found ectopic expression of LIMK1 resulted in altered expression of p27Kip1, the G1 phase Cyclin D1/Cdk4 inhibitor. Overexpression of LIMK1 resulted in lower levels of p27Kip1 and p27Kip1-pY88 (inactive p27Kip1). Knockdown of LIMK1 resulted in elevated levels of p27Kip1 and p27Kip1-pY88. Together, these results suggest LIMK1 regulates progression of G1 phase through modulation of p27Kip1 expression. LIMK1 is involved in the mitotic process through …
Creating Constructs Through Categorization: Gender And Race, Joshua Simpkins
Creating Constructs Through Categorization: Gender And Race, Joshua Simpkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In U.S. society, the systems of gender and race operate to privilege and oppress individuals based on their location within these systems. All of the interactions an individual experiences as they go about their day-to-day lives are shaped by these interlocking systems. As a result, there is an extensive body of sociological literature addressing how individuals in U.S. society are privileged and oppressed on the basis of their perceived membership in gender and race categories; however, relatively little research exists examining how individuals come to be seen by others as members of gender and race categories in the first place. …
Reconciling Order And Progress: Auguste Comte, Gustave Le Bon, Emile Durkheim, And The Development Of Positivism In France, 1820-1914, Khali Navarro
Reconciling Order And Progress: Auguste Comte, Gustave Le Bon, Emile Durkheim, And The Development Of Positivism In France, 1820-1914, Khali Navarro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis discusses the philosophy of positivism in nineteenth century France. Based on an empirical vision of society, positivism advocated values of rationality, progress, and secularization. In that way, it stood as one of the defining systems of thought of the modern era. I discuss, however, an undercurrent of anxiety about those same values. Positivism's founder, Auguste Comte, argued that all sciences would become unified and organized under universal principles and empirical standards. He viewed the human mind as becoming more rationalized throughout history. In his later career, however, he argued that rationalism was a destructive force and that a …
Treatment-Specific Approaches For Analysis And Control Of Left Ventricular Assist Devices, George Faragallah
Treatment-Specific Approaches For Analysis And Control Of Left Ventricular Assist Devices, George Faragallah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump that helps patients with heart failure conditions. This rotary pump works in parallel to the ailing heart and provides an alternative path for blood flow from the weak left ventricle to the aorta. The LVAD is controlled by the power supplied to the pump motor. An increase in the pump motor power increases the pump speed and the pump flow. The LVAD is typically controlled at a fixed setting of pump power. This basically means that the controller does not react to any change in the activity level of the …
Multifunctional, Multimaterial Particle Fabrication Via An In-Fiber Fluid Instability, Joshua Kaufman
Multifunctional, Multimaterial Particle Fabrication Via An In-Fiber Fluid Instability, Joshua Kaufman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spherical micro- and nano-particles have found widespread use in many various applications from paint to cosmetics to medicine. Due to the multiplicity of desired particle material(s), structure, size range, and functionality, many approaches exist for generating such particles. Bottom-up methods such as chemical synthesis have a high yield and work with a wide range of materials; however, these processes typically lead to large polydispersity and cannot produce structured particles. Top-down approaches such as microfluidics overcome the polydispersity issue and may produce a few different structures in particles, but at lower rates and only at the micro-scale. A method that can …

Quantitative Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Of Thick Samples And Of Gold And Silver Nanoparticles On Polymeric Surfaces, Aniruddha Dutta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is a reliable tool for chemical and structural studies of nanostructured systems. The shape, size and volumes of nanoparticles on surfaces play an important role in surface chemistry. As nanostructured surfaces become increasingly important for catalysis, protective coatings, optical properties, detection of specific molecules, and many other applications, different techniques of TEM can be used to characterize the properties of nanoparticles on surfaces to provide a path for predictability and control of these systems. This dissertation aims to provide fundamental understanding of the surface chemistry of Electroless Metallization onto Polymeric Surfaces (EMPS) through characterization with TEM. …

Synthetic Generators For Simulating Social Networks, Awrad Mohammed Ali
Synthetic Generators For Simulating Social Networks, Awrad Mohammed Ali
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An application area of increasing importance is creating agent-based simulations to model human societies. One component of developing these simulations is the ability to generate realistic human social networks. Online social networking websites, such as Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, have increased in popularity in the last decade. Despite the increase in online social networking tools and the importance of studying human behavior in these networks, collecting data directly from these networks is not always feasible due to privacy concerns. Previous work in this area has primarily been limited to 1) network generators that aim to duplicate a small subset of …

Studying The Effect Of Zeolite Inclusion In Aluminum Alloy On Measurement Of Its Surface Hardness Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Technique, Osama Mostafa Khalil, Ilya Mingareev, Tobias Bonhoff, Ashraf F. El-Sherif, Martin C. Richardson, Mohamed Abdel Harith
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used to study the surface hardness of special aluminum alloys containing zeolite. The aluminum alloy has acquired pronounced changes in its metallurgical properties due to the zeolite inclusion. The surface hardness of the samples under investigation is determined by measuring the spectral intensity ratios of the ionic to atomic spectral lines in the LIBS spectra of samples having different surface hardness values that have been conventionally measured before for comparison. The presence of aluminum silicate mineral in the studied alloys enabled material volume to expand under compression. This feature gave new results in the …

Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Typical measurements of light in the near-field utilize a photodetector such as a photomultiplier tube or a photodiode, which is placed remotely from the region under test. This kind of detection has many draw-backs including the necessity to detect light in the far-field, the influence of background propagating radiation, the relatively narrowband operation of photodetectors which complicates the operation over a wide wavelength range, and the difficulty in detecting radiation in the far-IR and THz. Here we review an alternative near-field light measurement technique based on the detection of optically induced forces acting on the scanning probe. This type of …
Melatonin-Induced Temporal Up-Regulation Of Gene Expression Related To Ubiquitin/Proteasome System (Ups) In The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Fernando C. Koyama, Mauro F. Azevedo, Alexandre Budu, Debopam Chakrabarti, Célia R. S. Garcia
Melatonin-Induced Temporal Up-Regulation Of Gene Expression Related To Ubiquitin/Proteasome System (Ups) In The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Fernando C. Koyama, Mauro F. Azevedo, Alexandre Budu, Debopam Chakrabarti, Célia R. S. Garcia
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
There is an increasing understanding that melatonin and the ubiquitin/ proteasome system (UPS) interact to regulate multiple cellular functions. Post-translational modifications such as ubiquitination are important modulators of signaling processes, cell cycle and many other cellular functions. Previously, we reported a melatonin-induced upregulation of gene expression related to ubiquitin/proteasome system (UPS) in Plasmodium falciparum, the human malaria parasite, and that P. falciparum protein kinase 7 influences this process. This implies a role of melatonin, an indolamine, in modulating intraerythrocytic development of the parasite. In this report we demonstrate by qPCR analysis, that melatonin induces gene upregulation in nine out of …

Thermoregulatory Strategy May Shape Immune Investment In Drosophila Melanogaster, Ian C. Kutch, Hasan Sevgili, Tyler Wittman, Kenneth M. Fedorka
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
As temperatures change, insects alter the amount of melanin in their cuticle to improve thermoregulation. However, melanin is also central to insect immunity, suggesting that thermoregulatory strategy may indirectly impact immune defense by altering the abundance of melanin pathway components (a hypothesis we refer to as thermoregulatory-dependent immune investment). This may be the case in the cricket Allonemobius socius, where warm environments (both seasonal and geographical) produced crickets with lighter cuticles and increased pathogen susceptibility. Unfortunately, the potential for thermoregulatory strategy to influence insect immunity has not been widely explored. Here we address the relationships between temperature, thermoregulatory strategy and …

Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Metastasis accounts for most deaths from breast cancer, driving the need for new therapeutics that can impede disease progression. Rationally designed peptides that take advantage of cancer-specific differences in cellular physiology are an emerging technology that offer promise as a treatment for metastatic breast cancer. We developed CT20p, a hydrophobic peptide based on the C terminus of Bax that exhibits similarities with antimicrobial peptides, and previously reported that CT20p has unique cytotoxic actions independent of full-length Bax. In this study, we identified the intracellular actions of CT20p which precede cancer cell-specific detachment and death. Previously, we found that CT20p migrated …

The American Heart Association (AHA) has advocated that women and men not consume more than 100 and 150 kcal/day, respectively, from added sugars. These levels are currently exceeded by over 90% of the adult population in the United States. Few data exist on longer-term metabolic effects when sucrose and High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), the principal sources of added dietary sugars, are consumed at levels typical of the general population. Sixty five overweight and obese individuals were placed on a eucaloric (weight stable) diet for 10-weeks, which incorporated sucrose- or HFCS-sweetened, low-fat milk at 10% or 20% of calories in …

The Contribution Of Visceral Fat To Improved Insulin Signaling In Ames Dwarf Mice, Vinal Menon, Xu Zhi, Tanvir Hossain, Andrzej Bartke, Adam Spong, Adam Gesing, Michal M. Masternak
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Ames dwarf (Prop1df, df/df) mice are characterized by growth hormone (GH), prolactin, and thyrotropin deficiency, remarkable extension of longevity and increased insulin sensitivity with low levels of fasting insulin and glucose. Plasma levels of anti-inflammatory adiponectin are increased in df/df mice, while pro-inflammatory IL-6 is decreased in plasma and epididymal fat. This represents an important shift in the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory adipokines in adipose tissue, which was not exposed to GH signals during development or adult life. To determine the role of adipose tissue in the control of insulin signaling in these long-living mutants, we examined the effects …

Notch-1 Mediated Cardiac Protection Following Embryonic And Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Transplantation In Doxorubicin-Induced Heart Failure, Hilda Merino, Dinender K. Singla
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Doxorubicin (DOX), an effective chemotherapeutic drug used in the treatment of various cancers, is limited in its clinical applications due to cardiotoxicity. Recent studies suggest that transplanted adult stem cells inhibit DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. However, the effects of transplanted embryonic stem (ES) and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are completely unknown in DOX-induced left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction (MI). In brief, C57BL/6 mice were divided into five groups: Sham, DOX-MI, DOX-MI+ cell culture (CC) media, DOX-MI+ ES cells, and DOX-MI+ iPS cells. Mice were injected with cumulative dose of 12 mg/kg of DOX and 2 weeks later, MI was induced …

Faculty Bibliography 2010s
From the photoluminescence of SiC microcrystals uniformly covering a rectangular mesa of the high transition temperature T-c superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta, the local surface temperature T(r) was directly measured during simultaneous sub-THz emission from the N similar to 10(3) intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) in the mesa. At high bias currents I and low bath temperatures T-bath less than or similar to 35 K, the center of a large elliptical hot spot with T(r) > T-c jumps dramatically with little current-voltage characteristic changes. The hot spot does not alter the ubiquitous primary and secondary emission conditions: the ac-Josephson relation and the electromagnetic cavity resonance …
