Only Screen Deep? Evaluating Aesthetics, Usability, And Satisfaction In Informational Websites, Carrie Avery
Only Screen Deep? Evaluating Aesthetics, Usability, And Satisfaction In Informational Websites, Carrie Avery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the role aesthetics plays in informational websites. In commercial interfaces, aesthetics (the perceived visual appeal and appropriateness of an object) has shown to correlate positively with many aspects of usability and emotional satisfaction. This thesis examines whether aesthetics has similar positive correlations in informational websites. Heuristics or guidelines for evaluating informational websites are developed based on empirical research and practitioner expertise. Categories for heuristic evaluation include usability, credibility, visual clarity, visual richness, and emotional satisfaction. A class of graduate students browsed three academic websites, evaluated them, and critiqued the heuristics. Results indicate that aesthetics does correlate with …

Morphological Operations On Color Images, Lloyd J. Sartor, Arthur R. Weeks
Morphological Operations On Color Images, Lloyd J. Sartor, Arthur R. Weeks
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Morphological image processing has been widely used to process binary and grayscale images, with morphological techniques being applied to noise reduction, image enhancement, and feature detection. Relying on an ordering of the data, morphology modifies the geometrical aspects of an image: object contours in binary images and object surfaces in grayscale images. Extending morphological operators to color image processing has been problematic because it is not easy to define geometry of a vector-valued function and ordering of vectors is not straightforward We propose a new set of color morphological operators based on a combination of reduced ordering and conditional ordering …
Why Communication Is Important: A Rationale For The Centrality Of The Study Of Communication, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Michael M. Osborn, Judy C. Pearson
Why Communication Is Important: A Rationale For The Centrality Of The Study Of Communication, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Michael M. Osborn, Judy C. Pearson
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article defends the importance of studying communication. Academic disciplines in higher education are routinely called upon to explain and justify their role in the educational enterprise. Some academic fields such as history and philosophy are more central in the pursuits of liberal arts, while others such as business administration and engineering are more related to career development. The discipline of communication is fairly unique as it crosses these boundaries. As a result, a need exists to provide a rationale for the study of communication. The National Communication Association, in response to requests from communication departments and administrators for evidence …

Multimedia As Persuasive Agent: Using Visual Metaphors To Establish The Rhetorical Agenda In A Communication Department Video, Sarah R. Stein
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article emphasizes the significance of computer-mediated communication technologies to communication studies based on a video document made by the communication department of North Carolina State University. The goals for the production of a video included promoting the Communication Department within and outside the university, educating viewers' as to the study of communication and its role in an information society, and advocating implicitly for the benefits of umbrella departments. The development of visual metaphors came as an unexpected by-product of grappling with those three challenges. Making the video highlighted the tension that exists between technological demand and communication imperatives.

A National Survey Of Core Course Requirements, Department Names, And Undergraduate Program Titles In Communication, Corwin P. King
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article presents a survey which assessed the typical number of core courses college departments have, the most commonly used ones, and, in a general way, their contents. The article also provides data on department names and undergraduate program areas for a picture of the communication discipline in the 1990s. First, with regard to core course requirements, the following observations are noted: Though a majority of departments now have some type of core course requirement, a strong minority don't. Departments that have a core typically have a small one. There is a good deal of variation in cores, but one …

A New Direction: Internationalizing Communication Programs, Sue Dewine
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article describes a successful effort to expand an already strong program to include a focus on international education as well. With the founding of Ohio State University in 1804, and classes beginning in 1808, the first courses in what was later to become the School of Interpersonal Communication were offered. Logic, persuasion and rhetoric were three of the major and early oral communication study areas. The current school was predated by elocution courses in 1888, a School of Oratory in 1912, the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts in 1930 and the School of Dramatic Art and Speech in …

New Curricular Categories For The Future: University Of North Dakota School Of Communication, Lana Rakow
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article provides information on new curricular categories of the University of North Dakota School of Communication, as of September 1995. The school historically has had a highly visible leadership role in the state of North Dakota, particularly with newspapers and broadcast stations in the state. Rather than limiting the possibility for change, however, its visibility joined other factors in making conditions for change favorable. The new curriculum streamlines the five into one, communication. This new curriculum is both mission driven and assessment driven. The new mission statement and goals for student learning set out the intellectual integration of communication …

Applying Communication Studies In Hong Kong, John Lee Jellicorse
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
The article discusses the trends in communication education in Hong Kong, China. Since communication is labor intensive, the need for personnel is swelling rapidly. Obviously, academic institutions in the region are faced with a tremendous challenge to encompass these developments. The School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist is attempting to meet the challenge. Hong Kong Baptist College, then a small, private diploma granting institution funded primarily from tuition fees, initiated its first program in communication. During the crucial period of its maturation from a diploma program to a degree course, the communication curriculum at Hong Kong Baptist was administered …
Communication Education Transformations: Implications For Curricular Change, Chris R. Sawyer, Phyllis Miller, Ralph R. Behnke
Communication Education Transformations: Implications For Curricular Change, Chris R. Sawyer, Phyllis Miller, Ralph R. Behnke
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article explores the implications of communication education transformations for curricular change in the U.S. Differences in education and training between public relations (PR) practitioners and journalists reflect, in part, effects of certain pressures brought to bear upon these professions. Any edge which graduates may have in the marketplace will depend on the extent to which their communication programs have focused on initial detection and measurement of related talents, skill development and enhancement, and discovery of communication-related careers that depend on the integration and application of these skills. With respect to faculty placement, infusing PR faculty into existing communication programs …

An Evaluation Of Art Teacher, Parent And Student Perceptions Of The Most Meritorious Goals For A High School Art Program, Clare E. Loveridge
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine and evaluate the perceptions of high school art teachers, parents of high school students and high school students themselves relative to the merits of goals of a district program for high school art education and to determine whether the three populations share a common perception of these goals.
The reveiew of the literature indicated a lack of substantive art programs in the curriculum from kindergarten through grade 12. The emphasis on art productino goals was cited as a major reason art is given such low status in our nation's schools. Many authors …

A Small Rhetoric Of Retrenchment: A New Ma In Telecommunications, Frank W. Oglesbee
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article describes the development of a Master of Arts program in Telecommunications at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, designed during a period of retrenchment and shifting institutional priorities. The program emerged from challenges including rising undergraduate enrollments, limited faculty resources, and the collapse of a previous interdisciplinary master’s degree in public visual communication. Faculty and administrators framed the proposal rhetorically to emphasize career preparation in management and policy rather than production, aligning with institutional goals of “smaller but better” programming. A distinctive summer-through-summer schedule was introduced to attract non-traditional students with professional experience seeking to complete a degree in one …

Nonverbal Communication Of The Deaf, Jayne S. Lytle
Nonverbal Communication Of The Deaf, Jayne S. Lytle
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Nonverbal communication among deaf people is discussed in relation to American Sign Language, Deaf culture, and interactions between deaf and hearing people. The article distinguishes between nonverbal behavior and the visual linguistic features of ASL, noting that movements of the face, eyes, head, and body may function as part of the language rather than as merely expressive gestures. It reviews assumptions about deaf people’s receptive and expressive nonverbal abilities, including the idea that visual communication automatically produces greater skill in interpreting body language. The article describes characteristic behaviors related to proxemics, touch, attention-getting gestures, eye gaze, and paralanguage, with attention …
