Memoria: Re(Member)Ing How To Heal, Vilma E. Portocarrero

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This serves as a contextualization of my family history and a reflection of my lived experience as a first-generation Nicaraguan American woman living in the United States. In my writing, I explore displacement caused by political unrest and the intergenerational impact of war on families. This work is multi-genre, incorporating elements of creative nonfiction, memoir, poetry, and oral history.

"Bad Boys" To Bigger Problems: A Study On Masculinity And Mental Health, Yesenia Conde Jan 2021

"Bad Boys" To Bigger Problems: A Study On Masculinity And Mental Health, Yesenia Conde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Enacting gendered behaviors and using gendered resources has been a way for boys to "do masculinity." One place where boys do masculinity is the public school system. It plays a large role in facilitating adolescent youths' exposure to peer groups where they learn gendered behaviors. Our culturally imposed social script for hegemonic masculinity emphasizes strength and social dominance which can be seen to influence a variety of psychological areas. This thesis examines the relationship between hegemonic masculine traits and mental health. Mental health and masculinity were operationalized and measured using the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey containing measures of masculinity, …

The Power Of A Name: Nontraditional Names, Teacher Efficacy, And Expected Learning Outcomes, Lasonya L. Moore, Martha S Lue Stewart Dr., Dena D. Slanda, Anais Placencia, Meznari M. Moore

Journal of English Learner Education

Names serve as important identifiers and carry with them hopes for a generation as well as pride in one’s culture. A name is often an extension of one’s culture or language and represents their identity. With the increasing student diversity across our nation, many students in our K-12 public schools may have uncommon or nontraditional names. Public school teachers, who are predominantly White, may find these names unfamiliar, difficult to pronounce or difficult to spell. Despite a name’s unfamiliarity, classroom teachers must have the knowledge and disposition to create a space that signals to a student that their name is …

From Esl To Eal: Moving From A Deficit Framework To An Asset Framework, Karen Bordonaro

Journal of English Learner Education

This article describes a self-directed autoethnographic research study of how the author moved from a deficit to an asset perspective in working with non-native speakers of English. Reframing this perspective took place by investigating how the author’s lived experiences as an ESL instructor intersected with the learning theories of language learner autonomy, plurilingualism, and internationalization at home to create positive flashpoints. These flashpoints included offering choices, marking learner success, and embedding cultural information into domestic settings. By engaging in these reflections, a widened perspective of moving from English as a second language to English as an additional language was reached. …

Anthropology In Florida, Rhea M. Smith

Florida Historical Quarterly

Any attempt to investigate the origin and customs of the aborigines of Florida through reliance on written materials is almost immediately frustrated by the paucity of such material and the scantiness of data available. Even an attempt to summarize the work done by field investigators leads to the baffling task of trying to reconcile conflicting theories, a condition that arises from the fact that the conclusions reached as to the origin, antiquity, and life of the early peoples of Florida are so indefinite. Yet there are few regions in the United States more abundantly supplied with mounds that call for …

Seeing Destinations Through Vlogs: Implications For Leveraging Customer Engagement Behavior To Increase Travel Intention, Yusi Cheng, Wei Wei, Lu Zhang

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Purpose: This study aims to understand customers' watching experience with travel vlogs and its impacts on one of the most prominent manifestations of customer engagement behaviors (CEBs) – word-of-mouth (WOM) – and their travel intention. Drawing upon the theory of resonance, this study incorporated both cognitive and emotional aspects of travel vlog watching experience. Design/methodology/approach: Online survey data were collected from 352 participants who have watched travel vlogs over the past 12 months. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was performed for hypotheses testing. Findings: The study results reveal positive impacts of source credibility, inspiration, escapism and self-congruence on …

Corporate Social Responsibility In International Hotel Chains And Its Effects On Local Employees: Scale Development And Empirical Testing In China, Chaohui Wang, Runhong Hu, Tingting (Christina) Zhang

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study aims to investigate the corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of international hotel chains operating in China and their effects on local Chinese employees. As CSR practices vary across countries and contexts, this study developed a scale of CSR metrics, which was based on CSR reports published by international hotel chains in China and a comprehensive literature review. Subsequently, the proposed model, which depicts the relationships between CSR practices and local employee work metrics, was tested with a PLS-SEM. Multiple phases of qualitative and quantitative investigations of 2451 local Chinese employees of international hotel chains allowed for validating a …
