Expectation And Satisfaction Of Freshmen And Seniors In Higher Education, Reuban Beryrl Rodriguez

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the expectation, satisfaction and performance gap levels between selected freshman and seniors as measured by the selected SSI scales. The problem was to determine if expectation, satisfaction, and performance gap levels differed between freshman and seniors in 1995 and freshman and seniors in 1998 based on class level, gender and age. The study examined four selected scales from the twelve scales derived from the Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI): Campus Climate, Campus Life, Campus Support Services, and Instruction Effectiveness. Proactively And In The Heat Of The Moment: Administrative Advice For Communication Instructors To Help Students Cope With Crisis, Jennifer H. Waldeck

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article provides advice on helping students cope with crisis. The first section discusses communication research that is pertinent to helping students be prepared proactively to deal with relationship crises. Second, it focuses on strategies that teachers of interpersonal communication survey courses may use to deal with students who are already victims of these situations, and as a result, may be emotionally troubled, abusing drugs or alcohol, or have suicidal feelings. Although communication faculty often are perceived to be immediate and thus approached by troubled students, most are rarely qualified to dispense or perform counseling duties. Recommendations are made in …

This article analyzes award winning communication programs. The winners of the Small College Interest Group's Programs of Excellence Award provide directions for achieving centrality and the goals outlined by the National Communication Association Task Force on Advancing the Discipline. They have similar names, degrees and locations within their institutions and they favor a holistic department and curricula that are interdisciplinary with strong department anchors. Most have assessment programs in place to maintain this quality. In most cases, they have identified themselves with the mission of their institution through courses and goals. These programs can provide some guidelines for departments in …

Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Lee Ronald, William Seiler Jan 1999

Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Lee Ronald, William Seiler

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article reflects on the vulnerabilities and strengths of communication departments at the University of Nebraska. The relatively small size of communication departments makes them especially vulnerable to administrative budget cutters. For a complex set of reasons, particular disciplines have become defining elements of universities in the U.S. Unfortunately, communication departments have not achieved such status. The professional organizations need to do more than offer the occasional workshop, they ought to make a concerted effort to help communications departments maximize the discipline's opportunity and make the field of communication valuable to students and become ever more essential to the university.

Nineteenth-Century American Housekeeping Books : Women's Workplace Manuals Historical Research In Technical Writing, Melanie C. Woods Jan 1998

Nineteenth-Century American Housekeeping Books : Women's Workplace Manuals Historical Research In Technical Writing, Melanie C. Woods

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes three American housekeeping books—Lydia Maria Child's The American Frugal Housewife, Catherine Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe's The American Woman's Home, and Helen Campbell Stuart's The Easiest Way in Housekeeping and Cooking—as historical examples of technical writing. The study follows current recommendations for historical research in the field, namely, to analyze technical writing texts in consideration of their historical context. This involves determining what constituted technical writing in the nineteenth century; considering the publishing context of the study; and applying this definition to analyze three housekeeping books as technical manuals. These texts exemplify technical writing …

An Analysis Of Research Article Productivity By Telecommunication Scholars Over The Past Decade, David Atkin, Leo W. Jeffres Jan 1998

An Analysis Of Research Article Productivity By Telecommunication Scholars Over The Past Decade, David Atkin, Leo W. Jeffres

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article presents a study which assesses scholarly productivity in telecommunication-oriented journals from 1985-1995. Telecommunication can be defined as mediated communication across a distance. Sixteen journals were selected for this analysis. Most were listed among publications with the highest number of telecommunication authorship credits, according to Vincent's study. Some of the differences in journal contributions may be a function of publication frequency and size. For instance, Journal of Media Economics (3.6 percent of articles) offered two issues/year through 1990 before expanding to four issues in 1993. Journalism Quarterly publishes more articles per issue than any of the other criterion journals. …

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article offers a model for other institutions that may be considering the development of an interactive video Masters Degree program, to share the process by which this program was designed and approved, and examines the issues and challenges confronted. This article is an attempt to help communication administrators benefit from our experience and gain insight into the considerations involved in the development of an M.A. offered via distance learning. The course offerings are based on a view that secondary and community college teachers are required to be generalists since they most often teach a wide variety of topics in …

Administering The Hybrid Department: A National Survey Of Combined Communications/Theatre Arts Departments, Ellen Halperin-Royer Jan 1998

Administering The Hybrid Department: A National Survey Of Combined Communications/Theatre Arts Departments, Ellen Halperin-Royer

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article presents a study which aims to discover characteristics of hybrid speech/theatre departments that describe themselves as highly cooperative and collegial. To test the hypothesis that departments that are highly integrated between disciplines enjoy higher degrees of cooperation than departments where the disciplines function independently, a national survey of combined speech/theatre departments was conducted. The first procedure was a mail survey, which was followed by a telephone survey. The mail questionnaire began with a question regarding the types of degrees offered by the department. The survey then included a series of yes/no questions pertaining to the degree of integration …
