Antiziganism And The Rise In Electoral Success Of Extreme Right-Wing Parties In Central And Eastern Europe, Mohamedameen I. Osman Jan 2023

Antiziganism And The Rise In Electoral Success Of Extreme Right-Wing Parties In Central And Eastern Europe, Mohamedameen I. Osman

Honors Undergraduate Theses

My thesis explores the association between Roma's perceptions of discrimination against them by native populations and electoral support of populist or extreme right-wing parties in Central and Eastern Europe. Roma communities have historically been discriminated and persecuted; however according to findings in the literature, during the Cold War there had been improvements in terms of protection of their rights and their economic advancement. Following the end of the Cold War, however, Roma lost these protections and their status worsened. This deterioration is partly attributed to the rise of far-right parties in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe; this connection, …

Evaluation Of The Violence And Stigmatization Against Children With Disabilities: A Literature Review, Nmesoma Ozougwu

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Violence and Stigmatization against children with disabilities are critical public health issues. Children with disabilities are a vulnerable population as they are exposed to various forms of discrimination and violence globally. The forms of abuse include, but are not limited to, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. The experiences of Children with disabilities are massively undocumented and there is also a lack of existing literature addressing the issue. The abuse and violence against children with disabilities are also underreported specifically in cultures where this abuse is socially accepted. There are gaps in the literature regarding the condition of children with disabilities …

Does The Health Literacy Of Spanish Speakers Impact Their Vaccination Decisions?: A Literature Review Of Related Research, Kelly Tran

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Background: The Hispanic community has historically faced high rates of vaccine hesitancy when compared to their non-Hispanic white counterparts. This not only poses a threat to their individual health, but also to their community. In a population that is disproportionately affected by COVID-19 infections, it is critical to address vaccine uptake concerns to control the pandemic and prevent future spread of infections.

Objective: This study aims to explore Spanish speakers' vaccination decisions and to explore whether improving health literacy would be an effective approach in increasing vaccination rates. The secondary objective is to describe the role of physicians in decreasing …

Sexual Violence, Identity Centrality, And Mental Health Among Racial And Sexual Minoritized Individuals: An Application Of Cultural Betrayal Trauma Theory, Brettland D. Coolidge Jan 2023

Sexual Violence, Identity Centrality, And Mental Health Among Racial And Sexual Minoritized Individuals: An Application Of Cultural Betrayal Trauma Theory, Brettland D. Coolidge

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Sexual violence (SV) is a pressing concern in the United States. SV (i.e., unwanted sexual contact, coercion, and wanted or unwanted penetration of another). Individuals with minoritized sexual, racial/ethnic, and gender identities experience worse psychosocial outcomes than their majority counterparts. People with multiple marginalized identities have been shown to experience traumatic events at greater rates and with significantly different outcomes compared to those with one minoritized identity. Cultural betrayal trauma theory proposes that these differences in mental health outcomes may be explained in part by a shared cultural identity between a SV perpetrator and victim, which is posited to exacerbate …

Emotion-Related Transactive Memory Systems: Theory And Nomological Network, Jigyashu Shukla Jan 2023

Emotion-Related Transactive Memory Systems: Theory And Nomological Network, Jigyashu Shukla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Transactive memory systems are emergent states in teams that represent the shared knowledge about skills and expertise of the team members which is encoded and stored in the collective memories and is retrieved when required. Traditionally, transactive memory systems literature has focused on encoding, storing, and retrieving only task-related information in teams. Unfortunately, this emphasis on the task-related aspect of transactive memory systems has ignored the potential for transactive memory systems involving emotional knowledge, skills, and expertise in the team. My dissertation explores the emotional side of transactive memory systems and introduces a novel construct: emotion-related transactive memory systems (ETMS). …

Interventions To Alleviate Guilt In Family Caregivers Of Patients Receiving Hospice Or End-Of-Life Care: A Scoping Review, Kyla N. Huelle

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This scoping review contains a literature analysis regarding interventions used by health care workers to alleviate guilt in caregivers of patients during end-of-life care. During end-of-life care, many transitions and decisions are made that add to the burden of caregivers. Family caregivers experience many physical, financial, and emotional stressors during the journey of end-of-life care, and this can result in guilt. Feelings of guilt can lead to poorer health outcomes and coping in family caregivers and should be addressed by health providers. In this scoping review, a literature search was conducted using various key terms like "guilt," "hospice," "end-of-life care," …

Professional Perception Of Gaps In Adhd Diagnosis And Treatment In Young Girls, Claudia Caputo Jan 2023

Professional Perception Of Gaps In Adhd Diagnosis And Treatment In Young Girls, Claudia Caputo

Honors Undergraduate Theses

ADHD has become a common place subject in both the scientific community and the common public. ADHD is talked about in the media, schools, and is a common conversation amongst parents. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has become prominent due to increased research but also due to increased accessibility of this research for the public. Contributing to this trend, there is an increase in open conversations about mental health awareness on social media. This phenomenon of people openly speaking about ADHD has led to more teens and young adults seeking diagnostic assessments and treatments for their symptoms. (Coppersmith et al., 2015) …

Analyzing Help-Seeking Behaviors And Barriers Among Hispanic Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Emely Mejia Jan 2023

Analyzing Help-Seeking Behaviors And Barriers Among Hispanic Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Emely Mejia

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is experienced by millions of women in the U.S. every year. As the population of Hispanic women continues to grow, there is more attention to the unique experience of these women and the factors that disproportionately affect this population when they experience IPV. The objective of this study was to identify the help-seeking behaviors and barriers to help-seeking in Hispanic survivors of IPV. The last published systematic review on this topic was in 2011, showing a gap in our understanding of the prevalent barriers affecting these Hispanic women over the last decade. To assess the current …

However, many states are currently experiencing a shortage of educators, including school counselors. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand the factors that contribute to school counselors selecting their career, as well as understanding what elements lead to the retention of professional school counselors. As there are no existing theories related to understanding the career choice of professional school counselors, nor pertaining to the supports leading to the retention …

Implement “Biographical Disruption” As An Anchor For Critical Reflection In Online Learning, Christopher J. Cachia Jan 2023

Implement “Biographical Disruption” As An Anchor For Critical Reflection In Online Learning, Christopher J. Cachia

Teaching Online Pedagogical Repository

A term first coined by Bury (1982) to describe chronic illness as an embodied break with the experience of everyday life, biographical disruption considers the knowledge that underpins one’s experiences. The following strategy captures how biographical disruption may be implemented as an anchor for (shared) reflection in the online learning environment, including reflection on both content and the online learning process itself. This anchor, coupled with the DEAL framework for critical reflection (Ash & Clayton, 2009), has been utilized as part of an engaging, integral, and powerful opportunity for student discussion and reflection.

Gender Ambiguity In Voice-Based Assistants: Gender Perception And Influences Of Context, Sandra Mooshammer, Katrin Etzrodt Dec 2022

Gender Ambiguity In Voice-Based Assistants: Gender Perception And Influences Of Context, Sandra Mooshammer, Katrin Etzrodt

Human-Machine Communication

Recently emerging synthetic acoustically gender-ambiguous voices could contribute to dissolving the still prevailing genderism. Yet, are we indeed perceiving these voices as “unassignable”? Or are we trying to assimilate them into existing genders? To investigate the perceived ambiguity, we conducted an explorative 3 (male, female, ambiguous voice) × 3 (male, female, ambiguous topic) experiment. We found that, although participants perceived the gender-ambiguous voice as ambiguous, they used a profoundly wide range of the scale, indicating tendencies toward a gender. We uncovered a mild dissolve of gender roles. Neither the listener’s gender nor the personal gender stereotypes impacted the perception. However, …

Associations Between Childhood Sexual Abuse, Adult Sexual Assault Experiences, Psychological Distress, And Substance Use, Diamonde Mccollum Aug 2022

Associations Between Childhood Sexual Abuse, Adult Sexual Assault Experiences, Psychological Distress, And Substance Use, Diamonde Mccollum

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

This study evaluates the potential mechanisms underlying the association between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and substance use among adult women. Moreover, CSA, adult sexual assault (ASA), and psychological distress (including symptoms of depression and perceived stress) was evaluated to determine how it contributes to substance misuse. Past research shows that individuals who experience CSA are more likely to experience ASA, which results in psychological distress. Individuals may use substances to cope with psychological distress from CSA and ASA, consistent with the self-medication hypothesis. Women (N = 225) were recruited from Mechanical Turk (Mturk) and completed an online survey. Results indicate …

Frederick C. Cubberly: "A Friend Of The Oppressed", Nicole Brown Jul 2022

Frederick C. Cubberly: "A Friend Of The Oppressed", Nicole Brown

Florida Historical Quarterly

Little is known about the life of Floridian Fred Cubberly, despite his importance in the legal and political history of Florida in the early twentieth century. This is unfortunate. He played a key role in initiating the United States Department of Justice's decades-long campaign against peonage, a form of slavery. His efforts led to the U.S. Supreme Court's 1905 decision that secured the federal government's authority to prosecute perpetrators of this crime. In the course of his career he was a mine superintendent, lawyer, U.S. Customs Collector, U.S. District Commissioner, U.S. District Attorney, Gainesville Municipal Judge, candidate for Florida Attorney …

The Florida Keys Hurricane House: Post-Disaster New Deal Housing, Matthew G. Hyland May 2022

The Florida Keys Hurricane House: Post-Disaster New Deal Housing, Matthew G. Hyland

Florida Historical Quarterly

Hurricanes make history in Florida, and scholars often pursue Florida's violent weather to trace the state's development in relation to storms and, afterward, recovery. Since the colonial period, hurricanes have demonstrated their power to damage the region's economy by destroying property, lives, settlements, and cities. One storm in particular, the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, proved to be a furious and destructive event. Its death toll was high-its destruction merciless. It stands as a landmark in the history of the Florida Keys, but focusing on the storm's strength and tragic drama obscures other relevant consequences. It also made architectural history. This …

Thomas De Saliere Tucker: Reconciling Industrial And Liberal Arts Education At Florida's Normal School For Colored Teachers, 1887-1901, Peter A. Dumbuya

Florida Historical Quarterly

At one and the same time, Thomas de Saliere Tucker's life and career in academia exemplified the triumph of liberty and human rights over slavery in the second half of the 19th century and the difficulty often encountered by those who challenged the long-held notion that equal education could be provided to blacks and whites in separate but equal educational institutions. In 1889 the Florida Superintendent of Public Instruction proclaimed that "it has become a settled policy in the State that competent colored teachers shall be employed to teach the colored children and youth."1 Seven years later, the United States …

Camp Roosevelt: A Case Study Of The Nya In Florida, Dave Nelson Apr 2022

Camp Roosevelt: A Case Study Of The Nya In Florida, Dave Nelson

Florida Historical Quarterly

In April 1940, Life magazine's cover story on "Government and Youth" updated an article the magazine had published on the youth problem in 1936. The cover featured a photograph of Mabel Sealey, an enrollee at Camp Roosevelt, a National Youth Administration (NYA) resident project in Ocala, Florida. The accompanying article, presented the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as boys' work relief, while the NYA provided relief for girls.1 In the gendered language of the narrative and the photographic images, the masculine CCC project accomplished important work such as fire fighting and tree planting, while teaching its enrollees military discipline and job …

A New Deal For Welfare: Governor Fred Cone And The Florida State Welfare Board, David Nelson Apr 2022

A New Deal For Welfare: Governor Fred Cone And The Florida State Welfare Board, David Nelson

Florida Historical Quarterly

In May 1937, Florida suffered from the crippling effects of the Great Depression. The governor's oflice received letters daily from out-of-work laborers, single mothers, starving children, and elderly dependants pleading for assistance and state action. Yet, Florida's government rested upon a shallow tax base making the state's ten-year old welfare system almost entirely dependent upon federal aid. Only two years earlier, the federal government had demanded that the state re-vamp its State Board of Public Welfare, requiring an increased state financial commitment, stiffer welfare laws, and higher qualifications for welfare employees before millions of federal dollars would pour into the …

Legacy To The People: The Civic Origins Of The Orange County Regional History Center, Bob Beatty Apr 2022

Legacy To The People: The Civic Origins Of The Orange County Regional History Center, Bob Beatty

Florida Historical Quarterly

On September 29, 2000, history will change forever," proclaimed the Orange County Historical Society at the grand opening of the 35 million Orange County Regional History Center.1 History in Orange County had indeed changed forever. Over a half century, the museum (and the commission and society that shaped it) struggled for legitimacy, particularly in finding an appropriate home. Prior to opening the Regional History Center in the 1927 Orange County Courthouse, the museu. hosted exhibits in five different locations. But its current address in the restored Courthouse is particularly appropriate and in a sense represents a closing of a circle: …

Something More Than A Creed: Mary Mcleod Bethune's Aim Of Integrated Autonomy As Director Of Negro Affairs, Christopher E. Linsin Mar 2022

Something More Than A Creed: Mary Mcleod Bethune's Aim Of Integrated Autonomy As Director Of Negro Affairs, Christopher E. Linsin

Florida Historical Quarterly

Hard work and divine inspiration remained central aspects of Mary McLeod Bethune’s character throughout her life. A strong and consistent advocate of racial uplift through industrial education and hard work, Bethune embraced Booker T. Washington’s educational perspectives and his advocacy of racial pride and group solidarity. Also sympathetic toward the position held by Washington’s ideological nemesis, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, Bethune embraced notions of racial empowerment by seeking both black social autonomy and full integration into the white economic community. Melding the philosophies of both Washington and Du Bois, Mary McLeod Bethune embraced an ideological position that sought to …

Examining How History Informs The Future Of The Two Sister Professions: Librarianship And Social Work, Rachel L. Edford Mar 2022

Examining How History Informs The Future Of The Two Sister Professions: Librarianship And Social Work, Rachel L. Edford

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Presentation at the "The Pasts and Futures of the Library Conference," California State University Fullerton, CA. https://itwebstg.fullerton.edu/lbst_conference/

In Whole person librarianship: a social work approach to patron services, Zettervall and Nienow (2019) aptly refer to librarianship and social work as “sister professions” (p.1), highlighting their gendered histories and similar professional values. A review of recent publications in library science journals and offerings at conferences reveals an interest in collaborations between librarians and social workers in a variety of settings, from social workers and social work students employed at public and academic libraries, to librarians and library staff being trained …
