An Apology For The Ph.D. Degree In Theatre: A Personal Retrospective, David W. Addington
An Apology For The Ph.D. Degree In Theatre: A Personal Retrospective, David W. Addington
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article offers a personal, historically grounded defense of the PhD in theatre, contextualizing its erosion amid the ascendance of the Master of Fine Arts and changing higher education policy. Through narrative reflection, it documents the decline of doctoral programs, administrative neglect, and labor market contraction, then contrasts the scholarly rigor, disciplinary identity, and research oriented training of the PhD with the practice centered MFA. The discussion maps comprehensive curricular demands, foreign language proficiency, and dissertation requirements onto professional pathways, demonstrating how such breadth cultivates critical theory literacy, historiographic competence, and instructional versatility. Examining technological advances, demographic shifts, and renewed …
Theatre Accreditation : An Argument Against, Patti P. Gillespie
Theatre Accreditation : An Argument Against, Patti P. Gillespie
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article critiques the push for theatre program accreditation in higher education, positioning minimum standards as psychological ceilings that discourage pursuit of excellence and homogenize distinct pedagogical missions. Drawing on philosophical reasoning and analysis of institutional politics, the discussion argues that accreditation frameworks lack valid metrics for theatre pedagogy, shift attention from learning outcomes to bureaucratic compliance, and risk misaligning scarce resource allocation. It observes that accreditation is already under scrutiny by federal agencies and faculty governance groups, and that tightened budgets diminish its leverage as a bargaining tool. By contrasting theatre with established fields such as music and nursing, …

Saying The Right Things (But They Don't Always Work), John Waite Bowers
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article analyzes how semantic framing of communication studies influences departmental legitimacy, governance, and program resilience within research universities. Employing narrative inquiry and institutional critique, it traces the precarious trajectory of a communication department subjected to severe program review, suspended doctoral admissions, and potential dissolution, then documents its strategic recovery through disciplined self definition, curricular clarity, and persuasive rhetoric to campus leadership. Comparative reflection on experiences at multiple institutions illuminates how labels such as discipline versus field and communication versus speech communication interact with administrative taxonomies, budget priorities, and faculty culture. The discussion integrates humanistic and social science perspectives, mapping …

The Employability Of Graduates Of Liberal Arts Programs, Al Weitzel
The Employability Of Graduates Of Liberal Arts Programs, Al Weitzel
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the employability of speech communication and liberal arts graduates, assessing claims about career outcomes through a review of empirical studies, national surveys, and employer perceptions. While some data suggest liberal studies graduates perform competitively in long term professional advancement, particularly in managerial roles, findings reveal that immediate employment prospects remain limited due to employer preferences for business and technical degrees. The article critiques optimistic narratives that overstate workforce demand for communication majors, instead calling for more accurate academic advising and targeted institutional strategies to improve graduate outcomes. These include integrating career planning into curricula, cultivating business partnerships, …
Problems With The Use Of Citation Indexes In Communication Research, Edward Funkhouser
Problems With The Use Of Citation Indexes In Communication Research, Edward Funkhouser
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article evaluates the limitations of using citation indexes as research tools in communication studies, particularly when ranking journals, departments, or individual scholars. It examines how the omission of five major communication journals from widely used indexes distorts the visibility and influence of scholarship in the field. Through an analysis of citations to articles published in leading association journals, the study finds that approximately one third of all citations originate from journals not included in citation databases. These omissions reduce the effectiveness of citation indexes for literature searches, bibliometric studies, and faculty evaluation. The article advocates for the inclusion of …

University Strategic Planning: Implications For Department Decision-Making, Claudia L. Hale
University Strategic Planning: Implications For Department Decision-Making, Claudia L. Hale
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines how university strategic planning influences departmental decision-making and long-term viability. It argues that departments must regularly engage in self-assessment rather than waiting for externally imposed reviews. Drawing on the case of Iowa State University’s downsizing and planning efforts, the discussion highlights three key criteria that guide administrative evaluations: necessity, distinctiveness, and quality. The analysis explores how departments can articulate their value to the university, differentiate their programs internally and externally, and demonstrate academic excellence beyond quantitative metrics. The piece calls for proactive planning that addresses organizational challenges and positions departments to thrive amid shifting institutional priorities and …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the evolving role of the academic department chair in the face of challenges anticipated for the 1990s. It emphasizes the complexity of balancing the needs of three constituencies (administration, faculty, and students) while maintaining program quality amid shrinking budgets, faculty shortages, and increasing diversity among students. Key priorities include faculty recruitment and retention, productivity, resource acquisition, and image-building to secure institutional support. Additional concerns addressed are governance, affirmative action, and student recruitment, particularly as competition for enrollments intensifies. Practical realities discussed include managing grievances, navigating administrative turnover, and addressing day-to-day operational issues, while stressing the importance of …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the expanding role of corporate education in communication training for adult learners and its relationship to higher education. It discusses how corporate learning has grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry, with most programs delivered internally or through consultants. Key drivers include technological change, organizational restructuring, and concerns that graduates lack essential communication, decision-making, and interpersonal skills. The analysis critiques traditional higher education for inflexible scheduling and insufficient emphasis on practical competencies. Examples are provided of innovative university programs offering weekend and workplace-based courses to meet corporate needs. The article argues for integrating broad theoretical foundations with applied skills …
