Biotoxicity Of Highway Runoff Metals To Gambusia, John M. Bateman
Biotoxicity Of Highway Runoff Metals To Gambusia, John M. Bateman
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A research study was conducted to examine the relationship between speciation of heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu) and their biotoxicity. Therefore, static bioassay experiments were designed to determine LC-50 values for those metals on mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis. The standard bioassay scheme consisted of twelve 16-liter all-glass aquaria that provided duplicates of five different metal concentrations and a control for each run. Deionized tap water and filtered retention/detention water from Maitland Pond were used for bioassays. The effects of various physiochemical parameters such as pH, alkalinity, hardness and organic complexation on metal toxicity were determined. Also, synergistic and antagonistic effects …

Decrescenzo
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report discusses research in three areas of organic synthesis: The synthesis of potential insecticides; the reinvestigation of the reaction of hexamethylphosphoramide with ketoximes; and the regioselective fluoroalkoxylation and polyfluoroalkoxylation of activated dihalobenzenes and dihaloheterocycles. In Part I, a series of N-(4-heteroaryloxybenzoyl)-N'-(2, 3-dichlorobenzoyl) hydrazines are synthesized, and attempts at cyclic dehydration to the corresponding 2, 5-disubstituted-1, 3, 4-oxadiazoles are discussed. In Part II, the synthesis of N, N-dimethyl-N'-aryl amidines by the reaction of aryl alkyl and diaryl ketoximes with HMPA is discussed. In Part III, a series of activated dihalobenzenes and dihaloheterocycles are reacted with sodium trifluoroethoxide to study the …
A Biosystematic Study Of The Fern Genus Lygodium In Eastern North America, Violet M. Brown
A Biosystematic Study Of The Fern Genus Lygodium In Eastern North America, Violet M. Brown
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The mainly tropical genus Lygodium differs from other ferns in that the fronds are indeterminate and are vine-like. A single species, L. palmatum is native in temperate North America. The temperate Asian L. japonicum is naturalized throughout much of the southeastern United States. About twenty years ago, L. microphyllum was introduced into South Florida and is now naturalized in several counties. The present study documents differences among spores and their generation, development of sporophytes from the fertilized egg, and in flavonoid chemistry. Hybridization experiments showed a strong possibility for cross fertility between species. Experiments with prothallial development and differentiation revealed …

Design Of An Evaluation System For The Electro-Oculometer, Chrysanthos A. Panayiotou
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper is to develop a system for evaluation of a skin-voltage Oculometer. A test set-up is designed that allows any person to attach the input of the Oculometer (electrodes) on his/her-self and obtain the transfer characteristics of the system. Two set-ups are designed. In the first one, the static transfer characteristics are obtained with the aid of a wall chart. In the second one, the dynamic transfer characteristics are obtained with the aid of a computer moving a bright spot on a large screen television set. An investigation of the possible sources of error is also …

A Model For Scattering In Dense Clouds, Richard A. Leblanc
A Model For Scattering In Dense Clouds, Richard A. Leblanc
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Lights is almost always detected by its interaction with matter. One of these interaction phenomena is the scattering of light by small particles. A model is developed that estimates the amount of energy that is scattered towards a detector from a beam given the locations of the source, detector and particle. This collection of particles is allowed to be very dense so that a photon scattered from the beam can be scattered several times before leaving the scattering medium. By considering the single-scatter component and multiple-scatter component separately, the model retains the characteristics of both types.
Graphic Display Of Geographic Spatial Data, Jill G. Ashby
Graphic Display Of Geographic Spatial Data, Jill G. Ashby
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This project developed computer graphics to display spatial and statistical data in a functional, appropriate and articulate manner. The spatial data creates mapping of Orange County focusing on traffic zones. The graphs display statistical data projecting from spatial areas presented in a simple form. The graphs produced by the system are geared towards an audience involved with transportation and planning decisions for Orange County. The graphics employ population, income, number of dwelling units, trip generation and trip production data based upon the 1980 census. The population, income, and number of dwelling unites statistics include predictions for 1985 through 2005 in …

Evaluation Of Research And Creative Work, Robert C. Dick
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Examining promotion, tenure, and salary review standards, this article considers how communication and theatre departments might evaluate research and creative work fairly. It uses university policy language to frame research and creative activity as major criteria alongside teaching and service, then raises questions about the relative value of refereed articles, books, book chapters, accepted manuscripts, book reviews, edited materials, and convention papers. The article also addresses creative activity in theatre and media production, asking how directing, technical work, performance criticism, and reviewed productions should be documented and assessed. It contributes to communication administration by emphasizing the need for clear departmental …

Academic Rewards And The Coaching Of Forensics: A Modest Proposal, N. Edd Miller
Academic Rewards And The Coaching Of Forensics: A Modest Proposal, N. Edd Miller
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Addressing academic reward systems for forensic directors and coaches, this article proposes that coaching forensics should receive recognition not only as teaching but also as research activity. It reviews the difficulty of categorizing forensic coaching within tenure, promotion, and merit systems, especially when compared with creative activity in theatre or media production. The article argues that effective coaching requires critical appraisal of evidence, problem formulation, argument development, organization, interpretation, and presentation, all of which resemble research processes. It recommends limited research credit for active and effective coaching while preserving expectations for traditional scholarship. The article also outlines possible evaluation criteria, …
Interdisciplinary Speech Communication: A Small School Alternative, Betty Jo Hyde Welch
Interdisciplinary Speech Communication: A Small School Alternative, Betty Jo Hyde Welch
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Set within statewide scrutiny of new undergraduate programs, this article describes the creation of an interdisciplinary speech communication degree at a small university campus. The article explains how faculty from several disciplines planned a curriculum combining speech, English, computer science, modern language, philosophy, psychology, and anthropology. It outlines a structure built around general education, a communication core, and a student designed collateral emphasis area. The article also reports subsequent program growth and movement toward independent departmental status. It contributes …
Faculty In Community Colleges Should Conduct Research For Publication, Carol S. Hopson
Faculty In Community Colleges Should Conduct Research For Publication, Carol S. Hopson
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Challenging the idea that community college faculty should be defined only as teachers, this article argues that research and publication are necessary for instructional improvement, professional identity, and institutional credibility. It traces the historical image of junior colleges as teaching institutions, then notes changes in student populations, instructional conditions, faculty credentials, and community college roles. The article identifies different categories of community college faculty and argues that instructors should investigate student needs, teaching materials, workloads, class size, developmental education, and classroom methods rather than relying on university based research. It also rejects myths that research is administratively irrelevant, incompatible with …
