Alternatives For Salary Advancement And Promotion, Lynn K. Wells
Alternatives For Salary Advancement And Promotion, Lynn K. Wells
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article critiques conventional salary advancement systems in higher education, particularly merit pay debates and degree- or credit-based scales, for their tendency to undermine faculty initiative and professional growth. As an alternative, it outlines portfolio-based models of evaluation that incorporate diverse forms of faculty achievement, including curriculum development, research and writing, grants, artistic performance, and community service. The discussion emphasizes the role of joint faculty–administration committees, clear evaluative procedures, and structured timelines in ensuring fairness and consistency. Drawing on examples from multiple institutions, the article demonstrates how broadened criteria for advancement can more effectively promote professional development and institutional quality …

Programs In Organizational Communication And Public Relations, Robert Ross
Programs In Organizational Communication And Public Relations, Robert Ross
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This study reports findings from a survey of members of the International Communication Association’s Organizational Division regarding the status of organizational communication and public relations programs in higher education. Data from seventy-nine respondents indicate that relatively few institutions offer full baccalaureate degrees in these areas, with most providing emphases or cognates within broader communication or journalism programs. Content analysis of definitions shows organizational communication conceived as encompassing all communication processes contributing to organizational functioning, while public relations is framed as boundary-spanning communication directed primarily toward external publics. Curricular patterns reveal overlap in courses such as public speaking, interpersonal, and small …

Edge Direction Confidence Estimation For Improvement Of Hough Accumulation, Eric J. Grajales
Edge Direction Confidence Estimation For Improvement Of Hough Accumulation, Eric J. Grajales
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The Hough transform silhouette identification method requires a consistency of edge direction in the identification of similar silhouettes. Many gradient operators used in Hough preprocessing require a thresholding and a non-maxima suppression routine to aid the localization process. These routines may delete edges or cause edge fragmentation. These anomalies degrade the Hough performance due to the lack of accurate silhouette extraction, and reduce the correct localization in the Hough accumulator. Noise or sampling errors can be removed by several enhancement routines presented. They are mean, median, symmetric nearest neighbor, hi pass, and low pass filters.
An edge detection process is …

Feasibility Of Pulsed Air Operation In A Fixed Film Biological Reactor, Harry C. Pepper Iii
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
An investigation was made into pulsed air sparging in a downflow, fixed film biological reactor receiving domestic wastewater feed (primary effluent). The pulsed mode of aeration was compared to continuous flow or non-pulsed aeration based on BOD5 and TSS removals. The reactor utilized 0.19 to 0.20 in. (ES) gravel media with a 5.5 ft. depth. Automatic backwashing was initiated by a high loss of head condition through a programmable controller. Average backwash water-volume as a percent of product water was, under stable operation, 16 to 18%.
The pilot plan was operated for a period of three and one-half months. …

Integration Of Computer Generated Images With Ntsc Video, Keith E. Lorenz
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
From the growing field of computer graphics comes the need to combine the computer graphics with video from other sources. Combining video from separate sources creates a problem since both sources are synchronous to each other. The objective of this research report is to present a hardware design approach that will combine two asynchronous video sources to produce one video picture. The combining of two video sources is called “overlaying.” The hardware design described in this report will overlay video from a Digital Equipment Computer PRO-350 with the video from an RS-170 video source. The design approach presented includes system …
