Microstructure Analysis Of Thin-Films Deposited By Reactive Evaporation And By Reactive Ion Plating, Karl H. Guenther, Boon Loo, David Burns, Jo Edgell, Debbie Windham, Karl-Heinz Müller
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
Electron microscopy, stylus‐type surface profilometry, and Raman microprobe characterization show distinct differences between thin films deposited by reactive evaporation and by reactive ion plating. Reactive evaporation yields thin films with the well‐known columnar microstructure with appreciable surface roughness and other deficiencies. Low‐voltage, high‐current reactive ion plating deposition produces thin films which are smooth and dense. Cross‐section electron micrographs of ion plated coatings reveal a densely packed polycrystalline structure for ZrO2 , while TiO2 appears to form vitreous films. Molecular dynamics computer simulation of the film formation process is in good qualitative agreement with the experiments. The results suggest the expansion …

Design Of Nonpolarizing Achromatic Beam-Splitters With Dielectric Multilayer Coatings, Muamer Zukic, Karl H. Guenther
Design Of Nonpolarizing Achromatic Beam-Splitters With Dielectric Multilayer Coatings, Muamer Zukic, Karl H. Guenther
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
Optical beamsplitters often consist of repeated pairs of high and low index quarter-wave layers. At oblique angles of incidence, such coatings typically have a fairly high polarization ratio. Reflectance, transmittance, and phase for the two orthogonal planes of polarization, s and p, are different in general. Here, we present the results of the design of all-dielectric beamsplitter coatings with very low polarization ratios. An initial sinusoidal refractive index profile, optimized with a refining computer program, yields a 50±1% beamsplitter in the 450 to 650 nm wavelength range, with less than 0.5% (abs.) difference between the s and p reflectance in …

A Rating Of Doctoral Programs In Selected Areas Of Mass Communication: 1987--1988, Kittie W. Watson, Renee Edwards, Larry L. Barker
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article reports findings from a national survey evaluating perceptions of doctoral program quality in mass communication. The study employed peer ratings from members of two professional associations to assess programs across ten areas, including research methodology, media effects, broadcasting, journalism, public relations, advertising, and overall quality. Results provide comparative rankings of programs, offering insight into how doctoral training in mass communication is perceived by academic peers. The analysis considers bases for evaluation such as familiarity with faculty, graduates, and publications, as well as the role of hearsay in shaping judgments. While noting limitations related to sample size and the …

Top Published Authors In Communication Studies 1915--1985, Nancy F. Burroughs, Diane Christophel, J. Cole Ady, Elizabeth A. Mcgreal
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article presents a historical analysis of publication productivity in communication studies between 1915 and 1985. Using the Index to Journals in Communication Studies Through 1985, the study identifies the top published authors in the field and examines patterns of scholarly output across seventy-one years. Results reveal that fewer than one percent of authors produced a disproportionately large share of publications, with the top group contributing nearly fourteen percent of all articles. The analysis highlights gender disparities, noting only a small number of women among the most prolific authors, while also documenting shifts in doctoral training institutions over time. The …

The Shift From Emphasis In Public Communication In Rhetorical Studies, Waldo W. Braden
The Shift From Emphasis In Public Communication In Rhetorical Studies, Waldo W. Braden
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article critiques the expansion of rhetorical studies from a focus on public address to the broader category of public communication. It reviews how rhetorical scholarship has increasingly embraced non-traditional subjects such as films, music, literature, and popular culture, moving away from orality and the analysis of individual speeches. Drawing on a survey of recent issues of the Quarterly Journal of Speech, the discussion finds that most published work concentrated on movements, themes, or philosophical issues rather than close studies of contemporary speakers or specific texts. While acknowledging the intellectual breadth gained by this shift, the article warns that such …

Communication Careers: Research And Rationale, James H. Mcbath
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article traces the rise of career education in communication and its growing recognition within higher education. It describes how demographic changes, labor market shifts, and student demand for applied training spurred interest in linking academic study with professional opportunities outside the academy. The discussion highlights the development of ACA-sponsored career publications, the work of the Task Force on Alternative Careers in Communication, and the expansion of nonacademic career pathways across liberal arts disciplines. Case studies illustrate communication graduates working in corporate, entrepreneurial, and organizational leadership roles, demonstrating the adaptability of communication skills in diverse contexts. The article argues that …

Use Of Aca Evaluators In Developing A New Program, Barron A. Barron
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article discusses the use of consultants from the Association for Communication Administration in developing new academic programs. Drawing on the experience of a small liberal arts university, it outlines the process of revising a mass communication curriculum to better reflect a liberal arts orientation while preparing students for both professional entry-level positions and graduate study. The account describes how faculty sought external expertise after internal consultation proved insufficient, and how an ACA consultant provided targeted recommendations for curriculum design, faculty development, and program improvement. Benefits of the process included enhanced credibility within the institution, stronger curricular integration across media …

An Investigation Of Articles Produced In The Communication Discipline By Institution: A Journal By Journal, Year By Year Analysis, Vernon O. Ray, Kittie W. Watson, Larry L. Barker, Robert N. Hall
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article presents a year-by-year and journal-by-journal analysis of article production in the communication discipline from 1980 to 1985. The study builds on earlier research identifying the fifty most productive institutions and examines both the number of articles produced annually and the distribution of publications across eleven major journals. Co-authorship was accounted for by dividing credit among authors’ institutions. Results show that top-ranked institutions maintained steady levels of publication, while lower-ranked institutions fluctuated more significantly in output. The analysis highlights trends in journal preferences among institutions and considers how editorial affiliations may influence publishing patterns. Although the study focuses on …
