Acoustic Emission Spectra Of Steel And Fiber Reinforced Concrete Beam Specimens As Induced By Static Loading, Christian C. Steputat
Acoustic Emission Spectra Of Steel And Fiber Reinforced Concrete Beam Specimens As Induced By Static Loading, Christian C. Steputat
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Acoustic emission (AE) behavior, due to localized cracking and damage, was studied in 200 reinforced concrete beams, 65 in. x 6 in. x 1 0 in., under monotonically increasing three point loading conditions. The material variables that have been emphasized, consist of: various concrete curing times (ages), amounts of tension and compression steel reinforcement, and significant glass fiber additions to the concrete mix. A total of 420 cylinders (6 in. x 12 in.) were tested to ascertain the range of material strength was minimal. Varying compression steel and tension steel areas, induced variations in the gross failures (observed cracking and/or …

All-Optical Switching Devices Based On Large Nonlinear Phase-Shifts From 2nd Harmonic-Generation, Gaetano Assanto, George Stegeman, Mansoor Sheik-Bahae, Eric Van Stryland
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
We show that the large nonlinear phase shifts obtained from phase-mismatched second harmonic generation can be used to implement all-optical switching devices such as a nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a nonlinear directional coupler.

Generation Of 20 Mw Of Blue Laser-Radiation From A Diode-Pumped Sum-Frequency Laser, P. N. Kean, R. W. Standley, G. J. Dixon
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Resonant intracavity sum-frequency mixing of a diode-pumped Nd:yAG laser and a 100 mW single stripe laser diode, has been used to generate a measured output power of 20 mW of blue laser radiation at 459 nm. This represents a total conversion efficiency of approximately 68% of the single stripe laser diode power incident on the cavity. The laser was also demonstrated to operate over a tuning range of 12 nm via angle tuning of the nonlinear crystal.

Laser-Induced Acoustic Phonon Gratings In Semiconductor Thin-Films, J. Wang, D. C. Hutchings, A. Miller, Eric W. Stryland, K. R. Welford, I. T. Muirhead, K. L. Lewis
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Laser induced ultrasonic standing waves are observed in molecular beam deposited ZnSe thin films using the transient grating technique. This observation is attributed to a very short trapping time for single photon absorption in the band tail. The period of the standing wave is used to determine the acoustic phonon velocity in the ZnSe thin film which indicates that it is longitudinal acoustic phonons which are excited.

Design And Construction Of Maintainable Knowledge Bases Through Effective Use Of Entity-Relationship Modeling Techniques, William Yancey Pike
Design And Construction Of Maintainable Knowledge Bases Through Effective Use Of Entity-Relationship Modeling Techniques, William Yancey Pike
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The use of an accepted logical database design tool, Entity-Relationship Diagrams (E-RD), is explored as a method by which conceptual and pseudo-conceptual knowledge bases may be designed. Extensions to Peter Chen's classic E-RD method which can model knowledge structure used by knowledge-based applications are explored. The use of E-RDs to design knowledge bases is proposed as a two-stage process. In the first stage, and E-RD, termed the Essential E-RD, is developed of the realm of the problem or enterprise being modeled. The Essential E-RD is completely independent of any knowledge representation model (KRM) and is intended for the understanding of …
