Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The one- and two-photon optical absorption spectra as well as the frequency dependent third-harmonic generation response of a side-chain polymer containing 4-dialkylamino-4'-nitro-stilbene (DANS) as its side group have been measured over a wide range of frequency. A three-state model, based on an intermediate neglect of differential overlap/multireference double-configuration interaction description of the excited states, provides a coherent picture of the dynamic response of DANS, but fails in reproducing the red shift observed when going from the linear to the nonlinear absorption spectra; including vibronic coupling within the Franck-Condon approximation improves the fit.

Spectroscopic Characteristics Of Nd3+-Doped Strontium Fluorovanadate And Their Relationship To Laser Performance, P. Hong, X. X. Zhang, R. E. Peale, H. Weldner, M. Bass, H. T. Chai Jan 1995

Spectroscopic Characteristics Of Nd3+-Doped Strontium Fluorovanadate And Their Relationship To Laser Performance, P. Hong, X. X. Zhang, R. E. Peale, H. Weldner, M. Bass, H. T. Chai

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

High slope efficiency and low threshold laser performance have been achieved for both long pulsed and cw operation at 1.065 μm in Nd3+‐doped strontium fluorovanadate crystal, Nd3+:Sr5(VO4)3F, when pumped by narrow band pulsed Cr:LiSAF and cw Ti:sapphire lasers. However, there are inequivalent Nd3+ sites in the crystal. The absorption of Nd3+ ions in secondary sites, sites other than the site which contributes to lasing, may reduce the pumping efficiency and, consequently, the lasing efficiency. Strong concentration quenching of the Nd3+ 4F3/2 state was also observed reducing the quantum efficiency of the laser transition from this state.

High-Pressure Specific-Heat Spectroscopy At The Glass-Transition In O-Terphenyl, H. Leyser, A. Schulte, W. Doster, W. Petry

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Measurements of the enthalpy relaxations in liquid orthoterphenyl in the supercooled state have been carried out using specific-heat spectroscopy over the frequency range from 2 Hz to 6.3 kHz, as a function of temperature and as a function of pressure. The observed α-relaxation peaks in the phase of the complex specific heat show increasing relaxation times τ with increasing pressure at constant temperature, similar to the divergence of τ when the calorimetric glass temperature Tg is approached by lowering the temperature at constant pressure. The temperature and pressure dependence of the measured mean relaxation times τ¯ near Tg are in …

Unity Ratio Of Cross-Phase To Self-Phase Modulation In Bulk Algaas And Algaas/Gaas Multiple-Quantum-Well Wave-Guides At Half The Band-Gap, A. Villeneuve, J. U. Kang, J. S. Aitchison, G. I. Stegeman Jan 1995

Unity Ratio Of Cross-Phase To Self-Phase Modulation In Bulk Algaas And Algaas/Gaas Multiple-Quantum-Well Wave-Guides At Half The Band-Gap, A. Villeneuve, J. U. Kang, J. S. Aitchison, G. I. Stegeman

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We have found the cross-phase modulation (XPM) for cross-polarized beams to be equal to the self-phase modulation (SPM) in bulk AlGaAs semiconductor waveguide at photon energies lower than half the band gap. For multiple quantum well (MQW) waveguide the ratio of the cross-phase modulation coefficient to the self-phase modulation coefficient is approximately one for the pump polarized perpendicular to the well plane (TM) and one-half for pump beams in the plane of the wells (TE).

Gaussian Beam Resonator Formalism Using The Yy Method, Kenneth A. Menard Jan 1995

Gaussian Beam Resonator Formalism Using The Yy Method, Kenneth A. Menard

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A simple and powerful new paraxial ray formalism is shown to provide an alternate method for designing Gaussian Beam Resonators. The theory utilizes the Delano yybar diagram approach and is an extension of the recent work by Shack and Kessler for laser systems. The method is shown to be complementary to the conventional ABCD method and is founded upon J.A. Arnaud's pioneering ideas for complex rays. The thesis develops an analytic formulation of a ray based complex wavefront curvature and yields a clearly generalized description of spherical wave propagation, for which Gaussian beams are considered a special case. The resultant …

Looking Beyond The Immediate Crisis Response: Analyzing The Organizational Culture To Understand The Crisis, Curt Bechler Jan 1995

Looking Beyond The Immediate Crisis Response: Analyzing The Organizational Culture To Understand The Crisis, Curt Bechler

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article analyzes the organizational culture at Olivet College in Michigan. The organizational response has been the subject of the most of the discussion on organizational exigencies. Perhaps most telling is the focus on organizational planning and preparation. Crisis planning allows individuals within the organization to change their view of the factors that constitute a crisis, since planning often reduces the severity of the event by lowering the uncertainties of how to respond. Communication is central to the resolution of a crisis situation. In fact, some would argue that organizations should focus on crisis communication instead of crisis management.

Minorities' relative share of the total faculty increased from 8.25% in 1975 to 12.34 % in 1991. Based on data inputs from 3,285 reporting units, EEOC reported that the percentage of faculty members who are women increased to 31.75% in 1991 from 28.5% in 1987.

A Summary Of Ideas For Sustaining Communication Programs, Paul E. Nelson Jan 1995

A Summary Of Ideas For Sustaining Communication Programs, Paul E. Nelson

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article offers several ideals for communication programs that want to persist through hard times. The ideal model for a faculty member varies by institution and level of instruction. If one is the major of last resort on the campus, if one is more likely to attract football players than members of the National Honors Society, and if one attracts majors because they do not have to take math, then one need better recruitment. On the other hand, grade inflation is a national problem, and it crosses many disciplines. The engineers and scientists tend to attract first rate students, but …

Integrating the two studies is expected to increase the communication skills of journalism students and enhance literary skills of communication students.

Looking Ahead: Video Courses In Business And Management Communication, Elizabeth M. Lynn Jan 1995

Looking Ahead: Video Courses In Business And Management Communication, Elizabeth M. Lynn

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article discusses the growing economic pressures to develop audio-visual materials for teaching business communication to college students and looks at the major obstacles in creating telecourses in the U.S. Due to the aging U.S. population and increasing cost of college education, U.S. schools resort to distance learning to attract older students and maintain the cost of education. Growing corporate initiatives to provide communication skill training to employees also increase the demand for videotaped business communication instruction. Major obstacles in developing telecourses include its limited capacity to teach behavioral skills in communication and quality control issues.

The Hybrid Master's Degree: Combining Research With Practice, David C. Coulson., Travis Linn

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article discusses the development of a hybrid master degree program by the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada in Reno. Since the journalism faculty of the school is too small to offer a full-service master's degree, the school developed a hybrid program that integrates systematic research with practice-based education. The program is designed to equip students with knowledge in academic research in preparation to doctoral studies. The program also emphasizes the study of mass media to prepare students for professional careers in broadcast journalism.
