Why Every Librarian Should Know About Copyright: Creating Copyright Training Opportunities For Librarians At Your Institution, Sarah A. Norris, Barbara G. Tierney, Lily Dubach

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This book chapter addresses the importance of copyright training and education and aims to provide case studies and scenarios that demonstrate effective opportunities for engaging librarians in various library departments in issues of copyright. In particular, the chapter will explore the University of Central Florida’s (UCF) unique intersection between subject librarians and scholarly communication, as well as the Office of Scholarly Communication’s efforts to provide internal copyright training to librarians across the institution.

Teaching Online Pedagogical Repository

The instructor can use course announcements posted at the beginning of each week to connect weekly topics and concepts to new topics and concepts modeling the cognitive process of connecting prior knowledge to new information. Research into teacher presence shows that students value the clarity of the information presented in a course and explicitly communicating the connection can be a powerful course announcement.

In August of 2018 a group of academic, government, and industry experts in the field of Augmented Reality gathered for four days to consider potential technological and societal issues and opportunities that could accompany a future where AR is pervasive in location and duration of use. This report is intended to summarize some of the most novel and potentially impactful insights and opportunities identified by the group.

Our target audience includes AR researchers, government leaders, and thought leaders in general. It is our intent to share some compelling technological and societal questions that we believe are unique to AR, and …

The summer semester is ending and the prep for fall has started. It’s only a few short weeks until the 2019-2020 academic year begins. We’ll have a full cohort of students back on campus. The lines for coffee will be never ending and a free parking space will be nowhere to be found. Life will definitely get more exciting.

Libraries staff has pulled together a full list of books that cover a whole range of areas. Some books are for our graduating students wondering what comes next. Some books are to help new incoming students start the year successfully. We …

What To Do With The American Musical?, David Poissant

In my favorite Simpsons episode, “A Fish Called Selma,” the family attends a musical adaptation of Planet of the Apes called Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off! The production is parody-perfect, replete with lines like, “I hate every ape I see / from chimpan-A to chimpan-Z.” Partway through the performance, a wild-eyed Bart Simpson says, “This play has everything!” to which an oblivious Homer replies, “I love legitimate theater.”

We presented our program on July 12, 2019 at the inaugural Panhandle Academic Libraries Conference held at the Florida Virtual Campus in Tallahassee, FL. The event was live streamed and a video recording of our presentation can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImbB4bdJveI&feature=youtu.be

Conference Abstract:

Four librarians, all liaisons to very different departments, collaborated to plan an event series that serves their common audience: student entrepreneurs. Hear how they connected with other campus units and organizations–and each other–to cooperatively provide programs featuring local entrepreneurs, market research, intellectual property, and business coaches and mentoring.

Featured Bookshelf: 2019 American History, Megan M. Haught

Featured Bookshelf

American history is a broad and varied topic. It ranges from the native inhabitants who formed communities here thousands of years ago to the creation of a new nation of states to the dreamers who immigrate to these shores today. It is an enormous amount of information to cover, but it is important that we all learn about our past. As Edmund Burke said in Reflections on the Revolution in France, “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.”

The founders of the United States, beyond their faults and foibles, began this nation with a grand and noble …

Supporting Access And Community-Building: The Cala Social Media Tag Library, Sai Deng, Esther Deleon, Jeannie Chen Jun 2019

Supporting Access And Community-Building: The Cala Social Media Tag Library, Sai Deng, Esther Deleon, Jeannie Chen

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) Social Media Group initially created the CALA Social Media Tag Library in Fall 2017 to facilitate better navigation and search for social media channels, particularly the CALA Facebook public page and promote the organization’s programs and activities. The Social Media Group introduced the creation of the Tag Library to the CALA community in Summer 2018, but the tags were limited to member-only, internal use. In Spring 2019, the restructured CALA Social Media Committee reviewed, enriched, and standardized the Tag Library, and decided to make it publicly available for anyone interested in posting to CALA’s …

Development Of A New Scale For Evaluating Authoritarianism, Melodie Spiegel Jun 2019

Development Of A New Scale For Evaluating Authoritarianism, Melodie Spiegel

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Despite the existence of multiple scales purporting to measure degree of authoritarianism as a personality trait, there exists disagreement within current research as to whether these measures reliably measure the three hypothesized domains of authoritarian submission, aggression, and traditionalism. This study focuses on the development of a new scale in response to methodological and validity concerns of previously-used measures. The new scale provides a reliable measure of authoritarian belief within the tested sample of college-aged students. Factor analysis of responses to the items of the new measure also provides evidence of the multidimensionality of authoritarianism as a construct. Further, significant …

The Effects Of Institutional Support Of Endangered Languages On Language Ideologies, Christy Box Jun 2019

The Effects Of Institutional Support Of Endangered Languages On Language Ideologies, Christy Box

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Endangered languages are those that are spoken by a very small percentage of the population and are at risk of disappearing with all the knowledge and diversity they contain. Endangered languages often become endangered because the speakers and the society perceive the language as low status or of little use, and a positive change in perception of the language could aid in revitalizing the language. Institutions such as governments, businesses, and universities have recently begun supporting endangered languages in several areas, and this support could greatly affect language ideologies, perceptions of and attitudes about the language. In this research project, …

Path To Fitness May Be Difficult — But Don’T Let Obstacles Get In The Way, Katherine Torres

UCF Forum

Talking about personal fitness or weight-loss journeys always seems to be difficult for some people, yet it seems like we are constantly faced by those topics every day on social media and TV. Some people try to share their story in hopes it will inspire or motivate someone to better their life. These stories show people that they are not alone and others struggle with body-image issues in one way or another.

Ready to fly your flag?

Pride Month has arrived! While every day is a time to be proud of your identity and orientation, June is that extra special time for boldly celebrating with and for the LGBTQIA community (yes, there are more than lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender in the queer community). June was chosen to honor the Stonewall Riots which happened in 1969. Like other celebratory months, LGBT Pride Month started as a weeklong series of events and expanded into a full month of festivities.

In honor of Pride Month, UCF Library faculty and staff suggested books, movies and …

The Religious Classroom: Analyzing The Cross-Application Of Instructional Communication Pedagogy To Youth Ministries, Lakelyn Taylor May 2019

The Religious Classroom: Analyzing The Cross-Application Of Instructional Communication Pedagogy To Youth Ministries, Lakelyn Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Instructional communication literature suggests that, to achieve optimal student learning outcomes, an instructor must completely engage in all aspects of experiential learning. It follows, then, that youth ministers should also employ experiential learning in their youth ministries to achieve their learning outcome goals among the youth they teach. This research project examined three research questions: 1.) What pedagogical strategies do youth ministers use during large group class sessions? 2.) In what ways do youth ministers employ instructional communication best practices within their pedagogical strategies? 3.) What strategies do former students remember their youth minister using the most? The analysis revealed …
