Color Matters: The Creation Of The Saralee Doll, Gordon Patterson Mar 2022

Color Matters: The Creation Of The Saralee Doll, Gordon Patterson

Florida Historical Quarterly

"It had begun with Christmas,” declared Claudia, Toni Morrison’s narrator in her novel The Bluest Eye. “The big, the special, the loving gift was always a big, blue-eyed, Baby Doll. From the clucking sounds of adults I knew that the doll represented what they thought was my fondest wish. I was bemused with the thing itself, and the way it looked. What was I supposed to do with it?“1 Through much of the twentieth century, generations of African-American children experienced the full force of this fictional character’s dilemma. Their skin color posed a barrier between their self-image and the image …

Florida's Fudged Identity, Stephen J. Whitfield

Florida Historical Quarterly

"No symbols where none intended," the warning that Samuel Beckett issued near the end of his second novel, would drive American Studies professors out of business and push them into an occupation of greater social benefit.1 For it is the point of this essay to find some inadvertent symbols and to discern iconographic significance in the history of a state. Florida should make an especially promising subject because of its mythic status, tapping into the nation’s definition of itself. Its saga appears to be more than a combination of geographic constraints and political boundaries and economic developments and demographic patterns. …

Before The Seminoles: Football At Florida State College, 1902-1904, Ric A. Kabat

Florida Historical Quarterly

When Coach W. W. Hughes looked out at his football team in the autumn of 1902, he was under no pressure to improve on the previous year’s season. Recently hired to teach Latin at Florida State College (FSC), Professor Hughes had played football at Vanderbilt University and, when he arrived in Tallahassee, had volunteered to coach FSC’s fledgling team. Practicing on the newly graded gridiron west of campus (a renovated cow pasture), the FSC Eleven prepared for their first game against a city team from nearby Bainbridge, Georgia. Hughes, pleased with the team’s progress, anticipated success.

Cramer V. Kirk: The Florida Republican Schism Of 1970, Billy B. Hathorn

Florida Historical Quarterly

Having languished for nearly a century as a nominal political entity, Florida Republicans seemed poised by 1970 to establish parity, if not supplant, the Democrats as the Sunshine State’s majority party. The groundwork for such a metamorphosis had been laid when Eisenhower and Nixon won Florida in four of the five presidential elections between 1952 and 1968. William Cato “Bill” Cramer was elected in 1954 as the state’s first twentieth-century Republican Congressman, and Claude Roy Kirk, Jr., seized the governorship twelve years later amid the internecine bickering of Democratic factions. Moreover, Edward J. Gurney’s 1968 United States Senate victory was …

"Whitewash" In Florida: The Lynching Of Jesse James Payne And Its Aftermath, Jack E. Davis Mar 2022

"Whitewash" In Florida: The Lynching Of Jesse James Payne And Its Aftermath, Jack E. Davis

Florida Historical Quarterly

On an October morning in 1945, the body of a black man was found lying on the side of a graded road in rural Madison County, Florida. Jesse James Payne, a struggling young sharecropper with a wife and child, had been unceremoniously lynched the night before. This was not an unusual occurrence in a state that by 1920 had the nation’s highest lynching rate relative to its population. But with Payne’s death coming at the close of World War II, when such crimes were all but nonexistent, Florida was again distinguished by being host to the only recorded lynching of …
