Phosphorus Accumulation In Bottom Sediments Of Retention/Detention Ponds, Kriss Young Kaye Jan 1993

Phosphorus Accumulation In Bottom Sediments Of Retention/Detention Ponds, Kriss Young Kaye

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Laboratory and field studies were conducted to characterize phosphorus in bottom sediments for retention/detention ponds. The laboratory studies, including batch and column experiments, were conducted to assess possible removal processes. Sediment core samples were collected from detention ponds receiving urban runoff. These cores were analyzed for phosphorus at different layers including accumulated top sediments and the lower parent soil beneath it at a depth of 1, 3, 5, 10 and greater than 10 cm. The phosphorus accumulation rate was found to decline with calculated overflow rates from an average storm. Also attenuation of phosphorus with sediment depth followed an exponential …

Acoustic Emission Spectra Of Steel And Fiber Reinforced Concrete Beam Specimens As Induced By Static Loading, Christian C. Steputat Jan 1993

Acoustic Emission Spectra Of Steel And Fiber Reinforced Concrete Beam Specimens As Induced By Static Loading, Christian C. Steputat

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Acoustic emission (AE) behavior, due to localized cracking and damage, was studied in 200 reinforced concrete beams, 65 in. x 6 in. x 1 0 in., under monotonically increasing three point loading conditions. The material variables that have been emphasized, consist of: various concrete curing times (ages), amounts of tension and compression steel reinforcement, and significant glass fiber additions to the concrete mix. A total of 420 cylinders (6 in. x 12 in.) were tested to ascertain the range of material strength was minimal. Varying compression steel and tension steel areas, induced variations in the gross failures (observed cracking and/or …

Measuring And Compensating For Transport Delay In Real-Time Interactive Driving Simulation, Joseph D. Dumas Ii Jan 1993

Measuring And Compensating For Transport Delay In Real-Time Interactive Driving Simulation, Joseph D. Dumas Ii

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Real-time, man-in-the-loop simulators are important tools for operator training as well as human performance research. Simulator implementation using digital computers offers many important advantages but may also cause problems. One of the most significant and troublesome artifacts of digital computer simulation is the presence of transport delays in the operator/vehicle control loop. Transport delays have been shown to destabilize the system, resulting in poorer control of the simulated vehicle. They may also contribute to an increased likelihood of simulator sickness in human operators. Therefore, it is desirable to be able to quantify simulator transport delays and to compensate the system …

Current Accessibility Of, Knowledge Of, And Experience With Distance Education Technologies At Three Small Colleges In Kelskemet Hungary, Richard Adams Dietzel Jan 1993

Current Accessibility Of, Knowledge Of, And Experience With Distance Education Technologies At Three Small Colleges In Kelskemet Hungary, Richard Adams Dietzel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In Kecskemet, Hungary, three small colleges are discussing plans to form a new university and implement some of their courses using distance education technologies, if political and economic conditions are favorable. The purpose of this case study was to answer some basic questions about: (1) the accessibility to 74 different technologies which could be used in the planning and implementation of distance education programs, (2) the knowledge of the planners about these technologies, and (3) their experience using them. Planners were selected by respective college rectors as: ·Horticulture College (N=16), Mechanical Engineering and Automation College (N-16), Teacher Training College (N=7). …

Responsibility Center Budgeting: A Review And Commentary On The Concept And The Process, Robert Heath Jan 1993

Responsibility Center Budgeting: A Review And Commentary On The Concept And The Process, Robert Heath

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article focuses on the concept and the process of responsibility center budgeting. Academic publications, professional newsletters, convention conversations, E-mail, departmental bulletin boards, and hallway conversations at academic institutions are filled with voiced concerns about the future of higher education--specifically budgets related to academic and research program support. In tough times, innovation is essential. One innovation is responsibility center budgeting (RCB) which may empower faculty to feel confident that if they generate more income and lower costs for their colleges and universities they will be allowed to determine how those extra funds will be spent. Since faculty talent is the …

The Ethos Of An Academic Department, Mark Hickson Iii Jan 1993

The Ethos Of An Academic Department, Mark Hickson Iii

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the ethos of an academic department. It is fundamental that a department have high credibility on campus. Such ethos is important for faculty members gaining positions on important committees on campus. When departments do not produce research, for example, they are unlikely to have faculty placed on research/graduate school committees. The three most important components of a credible department are faculty, students, and administrators. Student ethos is obtained and maintained through the quality and quantity of enrollees in service and major program courses. Faculty ethos is comprised of effective teaching, curriculum maintenance, productive research, and outstanding service. …

Rebuilding For Efficiency: Improving The Energy Use Of Reconstructed Residences In South Florida, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker Dec 1992

Rebuilding For Efficiency: Improving The Energy Use Of Reconstructed Residences In South Florida, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

On August 24th, 1992, Hurricane Andrew devastated a large part of South Dade County in Florida. With over 35,000 homes to be rebuilt, there is interest in seeing if these reconstructed residences can be made more energy-efficient.

This report provides a comprehensive assessment of potential energy efficiency improvements for both new and existing homes in South Florida. Over forty energy-efficiency measures were considered in the analysis. Many homes in the effected zone experienced damage to their windows, roofs and the surrounding landscape. As a result, the analysis closely examined options associated with these design aspects. All major end-uses of electricity …

FSEC Energy Research Center®

FSEC 3.0 was developed to support research. It is a general-purpose software package especially designed to simulate complex building science problems. The program offers several unique features.

The major feature is its ability to solve user-defined systems of governing equations. Up to 250 coupled differential equations and their corresponding boundary conditions may be either selected from libraries or defined by the user. The equations may be linear or nonlinear; spatially-lumped or spatially-distributed; steady-state or transient; ordinary or partial. The structure of the software also allows users to incorporate their own routines or programs. Thus, researchers may define their specific problem …
