Mathematical-Modeling Of Key-Hole Laser-Welding, A. Kar, J. Mazumder Jan 1995

Mathematical-Modeling Of Key-Hole Laser-Welding, A. Kar, J. Mazumder

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Laser welding is a unique way of joining materials with less thermal distortion and minimum metallurgical damage to the workpiece. The molten pool formed during welding determines the shape of the final welded region. At high laser intensities, the molten material vaporizes and a key hole is formed during the welding process. This vapor and the shape of the molten pool affect the absorption of laser at the liquid surface. The forces generated at the liquid-vapor interface due to surface tension gradient induce thermocapillary convection in the weld pool. This paper presents a mathematical model by considering these surface forces …

Development Of A Desuperheater Rating Method For Energy Code Calculations, Tim Merrigan Jan 1995

Development Of A Desuperheater Rating Method For Energy Code Calculations, Tim Merrigan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to develop a rating method for desuperheater water heaters – heat exchangers that remove superheat from the refrigerant in an air conditioner’s compressor discharge line. The project methodology was to first determine the overall heat transfer coefficient-area product (UA) of the heat exchanger for three basic types of desuperheaters. Both heat transfer analysis and the laboratory performance data indicated that the number of transfer units (NTU) for each heat exchanger was relatively independent of the operating conditions for a properly-charged air conditioner with a single-speed compressor and a desuperheater with a single-speed circulating pump. …

Finite Impulse Response Utilizing The Principles Of Superposition, Scott Edward Carter Jan 1995

Finite Impulse Response Utilizing The Principles Of Superposition, Scott Edward Carter

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Window functions have been greatly utilized in the synthesis of finite impulse response (FIR) filters implemented using surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. The critical parameter in any FIR design in the impulse response length, which must be optimized for the given design specifications in order to reduce the size of each device. To this end, many design algorithms have been introduced such as Remez exchange, linear programming, and least mean squares. A new algorithm has been derived which is efficient and accurate for the design of arbitrary filter specifications requiring less computations than the current algorithms. The FIR design is …

Nonlinear Robust Control Of A Series Dc Motor Utilizing The Recursive Design Approach, Michael J. Burridge Jan 1995

Nonlinear Robust Control Of A Series Dc Motor Utilizing The Recursive Design Approach, Michael J. Burridge

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the investigation of asymptotic stability of the series DC motor with unknown load-torque and unknown armature inductance is considered. The control technique of recursive, or backstepping, design is employed. Three cases are considered. In the first case, the system is assumed to be perfectly known. In the second case, the load torque is assumed to be unknown and a proportional-integral controller is developed to compensate for this unknown quantity. In the final case, it is assumed that two system parameters, load torque and armature inductance, are not known exactly, but vary from expected nominal values within a …

Tender Offer Outcome Prediction Based Upon Efficient Market Hypothesis, James I. Montgomery Jan 1995

Tender Offer Outcome Prediction Based Upon Efficient Market Hypothesis, James I. Montgomery

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A significant portion of firms' capital expenditures in the recent past have been accomplished through the acquisition of the assets of other firms by tender offers. While the majority of tender offers are successful, a significant number of tender offers fail for various reasons. The accurate prediction of the success or failure of a tender offer would provide investors with valuable information upon which to base their investment decisions. The target firm shareholders could use the information as a base for their tendering decision. For the abitrageur, a predictive model would reduce the uncertainty associated with their investment activity and, …

The Painleve Formulations And Exact-Solutions Of The Nonlinear Evolution-Equations For Modulated Gravity-Wave Trains, Bhimsen K. Shivamoggi, David K. Rollins

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

In this article the integrability aspects of the nonlinear evolution equations for modulated gravity wave trains are investigated by demanding the Painleve property of the solutions. The Painleve formulations also lead to kink-shaped exact localized solutions of these equations.

Nonlinear Steady-State Mesoscopic Transport, I. Formalism, M. D. Johnson, O. Heinonen Jan 1995

Nonlinear Steady-State Mesoscopic Transport, I. Formalism, M. D. Johnson, O. Heinonen

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We present an approach to steady-state mesoscopic transport based on the maximum entropy principle formulation of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. This approach is valid in the nonlinear regime of high current, and yields the quantization observed in the integer quantum Hall effect at large currents. A key ingredient of this approach, and its success in explaining high-precision Hall measurements, is that the occupancy of single-electron states depends on their current as well as their energy. This suggests that the reservoir picture commonly used in mesoscopic transport is unsatisfactory outside of linear response.

High-Pressure Specific-Heat Spectroscopy At The Glass-Transition In O-Terphenyl, H. Leyser, A. Schulte, W. Doster, W. Petry Jan 1995

High-Pressure Specific-Heat Spectroscopy At The Glass-Transition In O-Terphenyl, H. Leyser, A. Schulte, W. Doster, W. Petry

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Measurements of the enthalpy relaxations in liquid orthoterphenyl in the supercooled state have been carried out using specific-heat spectroscopy over the frequency range from 2 Hz to 6.3 kHz, as a function of temperature and as a function of pressure. The observed α-relaxation peaks in the phase of the complex specific heat show increasing relaxation times τ with increasing pressure at constant temperature, similar to the divergence of τ when the calorimetric glass temperature Tg is approached by lowering the temperature at constant pressure. The temperature and pressure dependence of the measured mean relaxation times τ¯ near Tg are in …

Partially Polarized Beams In Nonlinear Thomson Scattering, Eduardo Ugaz Jan 1995

Partially Polarized Beams In Nonlinear Thomson Scattering, Eduardo Ugaz

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We discuss the electromagnetic potential of partially polarized light, which includes as a special case linearly polarized lasers, and the radiation of free electrons induced by such beams. A classical electrodynamics calculation is performed in order to obtain the low-order harmonic cross sections at low beam intensities. According to the correspondence principle for radiation processes in the Thomson limit, we find agreement between our results and those of quantum electrodynamics. The implications of this correspondence for processes at arbitrary intensities, relativistic electrons, and pulsed beams are also underlined.
