Design Considerations And Thermodynamic Feasibility Study Of A Meso-Scale Refrigerator, Nabil Shovon Ashraf

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in micro-fabrication technology have ushered a new era in miniaturization of chemical, environmental and energy systems. This foreseeable trend towards miniaturization in chemical, environmental and mechanical systems is expected to revolutionize the ways the human life is being perceived today. The high volume and mass reproducibility is seen as the striking aspect of micro-fabrication based miniature systems, offering economies far exceeding than the economies of scale obtained in large plants. The focus of this thesis work is directed at the thermodynamic feasibility and preliminary prototype design for a meso-scale refrigerator. Miniaturization to sub-centimeter domain will enable configuring these …

Effects Of Laser Mode And Scanning Direction On Melt Pool Shape, K. Farooq, A. Kar Jan 1999

Effects Of Laser Mode And Scanning Direction On Melt Pool Shape, K. Farooq, A. Kar

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

A three-dimensional quasi-steady-state mathematical model is presented for laser heating with a multimode beam. The effects of laser beam scanning direction on the melt pool shape are investigated through the conduction analysis without phase change. The maximum temperature is found to be behind the center of the focal spot due to advection. The isotherms ahead of the focal spot bunch together and spread apart behind the focal spot on the surface of the workpiece due to the same effect. The temperature profile shows four distinct peaks as a result of four intensity peaks. Scanning direction affects the melt pool shape …

Statistical Estimation Of Locations Of Lightning Events, Marianna Pensky, John R. Cannon Jan 1999

Statistical Estimation Of Locations Of Lightning Events, Marianna Pensky, John R. Cannon

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

In this paper, a statistical approach to the retrieval of lightning locations is proposed for the first time. This novel approach views the errors of the time measurements as random variables rather than unknown numbers. The unknown location (x, y, z) as well as the standard deviation a of the errors are treated as unknown parameters of a statistical model and are estimated using the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) technique. On the basis of Monte Carlo simulations these statistical estimators are compared with the least squares estimators (LSE), as well as the solutions of the system of linear equations proposed …

Magnetohydrodynamic Boundary Layer On A Flat Plate: Further Analytic Results, Bhimsen K. Shivamoggi, David K. Rollins Jan 1999

Magnetohydrodynamic Boundary Layer On A Flat Plate: Further Analytic Results, Bhimsen K. Shivamoggi, David K. Rollins

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Further analytic results are deduced with the magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer equations for a flat plate. The asymptotic behavior of the solutions is deduced using the scaling group method. Then, an analytic perturbative procedure is used to determine an approximate solution that exhibits this asymptotic behavior.

Invariant Painleve Analysis And Coherent Structures Of Two Families Of Reaction-Diffusion Equations, Ugur Tanriver, S. Roy Choudhury Jan 1999

Invariant Painleve Analysis And Coherent Structures Of Two Families Of Reaction-Diffusion Equations, Ugur Tanriver, S. Roy Choudhury

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Exact closed-form coherent structures (pulses/fronts/domain walls) having the form of complicated traveling waves are constructed for two families of reaction-diffusion equations by the use of invariant Painleveacute analysis. These analytical solutions, which are derived directly from the underlying PDE's, are investigated in the light of restrictions imposed by the ODE that any traveling wave reduction of the corresponding PDE must satisfy. In particular, it is shown that the coherent structures (a) asymptotically satisfy the ODE governing traveling wave reductions, and (b) are accessible to the PDE from compact support initial conditions. The solutions are compared with each other, and with …

Quasi-Analytical Solutions For Apsidal Motion In The Three-Body Problem: Sun - Minor Planet - Jupiter, Wan Xian Wang, N. Y. Misconi Jan 1999

Quasi-Analytical Solutions For Apsidal Motion In The Three-Body Problem: Sun - Minor Planet - Jupiter, Wan Xian Wang, N. Y. Misconi

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

This paper deals with the effect of a third body on the apsidal motion of two bodies. The specific case involves a third body-planet Jupiter and the apsidal line motion of a minor planet that orbits the Sun and has its apsidal line go through the major axis of an ellipse. The third body (Jupiter) which satisfies the Langrangian solution will affect the apsidal line motion and therefore affects the ascending and descending motions of the minor planet. In this case no analytical solutions can be obtained, and therefore specific assumptions are made along with numerical solutions. For convenience, we …

An Intelligent Editor For Natural Language Processing Of Unrestricted Text, Demetrios George Glinos Jan 1999

An Intelligent Editor For Natural Language Processing Of Unrestricted Text, Demetrios George Glinos

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The understanding of natural language by computational methods has been a continuing and elusive problem in artificial intelligence. In recent years there has been a resurgence in natural language processing research. Much of this work has been on empirical or corpus-based methods which use a data-driven approach to train systems on large amounts of real language data. Using corpus-based methods, the performance of part-of-speech (POS) taggers, which assign to the individual words of a sentence their appropriate part of speech category (e.g., noun, verb, preposition), now rivals human performance levels, achieving accuracies exceeding 95%. Such taggers have proved useful as …

Dynamic Modeling Of Pwm And Single-Switch Single-Stage Power Factor Correction Converters, Guangyong Zhu Jan 1999

Dynamic Modeling Of Pwm And Single-Switch Single-Stage Power Factor Correction Converters, Guangyong Zhu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The concept of averaging has been used extensively in the modeling of power electronic circuits to overcome their inherent time-variant nature. Among various methods, the PWM switch modeling approach is most widely accepted in the study of closed-loop stability and transient response because of its accuracy and simplicity. However, a non-ideal PWM switch model considering conduction losses is not available except for converters operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and under small ripple conditions. Modeling of conductor losses under large ripple conditions has not been reported in the open literature, especially when the converter operates in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). …

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel Jan 1999

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method has gained tremendous popularity in the past decade as a tool for solving Maxwell's equations. Phased Array Antennas find several applications including mobile communications ( cellular, personal communication systems and networks), satellite communications, global positioning system (GPS), aeronautical and radar systems. This dissertation describes the application of the FDTD method for calculating broadband characteristics of finite-sized phased array antennas consisting of microstrip elements fed with coaxial probes.

The characterization of such antennas is dependent upon the development of simulation tools that can accurately model general topologies including wires, dielectrics, conductors lumped elements and metallic strips. …

Grading Policy And Student Retention, Ralph R. Behnke, Chris R. Sawyer, Paul E. King Jan 1999

Grading Policy And Student Retention, Ralph R. Behnke, Chris R. Sawyer, Paul E. King

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discuses two policies that work at cross purposes to one another which university administrators and faculty works collaboratively with. Schools are actively resisting grade inflation trends while at the same time seeking to retain students. The article describes the borderline student, a category of at risk student often overlooked, yet numerous. It is found that academic performance was the highest ranked risk factor, accounting for approximately 20% of the variance, while behavior and coping skills was a distant second, accounting for only 6% of the risk factor variance. Borderline students can be efficiently rescued with modest outlays of …

Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Lee Ronald, William Seiler Jan 1999

Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Lee Ronald, William Seiler

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article reflects on the vulnerabilities and strengths of communication departments at the University of Nebraska. The relatively small size of communication departments makes them especially vulnerable to administrative budget cutters. For a complex set of reasons, particular disciplines have become defining elements of universities in the U.S. Unfortunately, communication departments have not achieved such status. The professional organizations need to do more than offer the occasional workshop, they ought to make a concerted effort to help communications departments maximize the discipline's opportunity and make the field of communication valuable to students and become ever more essential to the university.

Method Of Time-Resolving Fourier-Transform Spectroscopy To Allow Interferogram Sampling At Unevenly Spaced Path Length Differences, Robert Peale, Henry Weidner

UCF Patents

A low cost method of adding time-resolving capability to commercial Fourier-transform spectrometers with a continuously scanning Michelson interferometer. This invention is specifically designed to eliminate noise and artifacts caused by mirror-speed variations in the interferometer. The method exists as two parts: 1) a novel timing scheme for synchronizing the transient events under study with the digitizing by an analog-to-digital converter, and 2) a mathematical algorithm for extracting the spectral information from the recorded data. The novel timing scheme is a modification of the well known interleaved, or stroboscopic, method. It achieves the same timing accuracy, signal-to-noise ratio, and freedom from …
