Nonlinear Propagation Of Two-Dimensional Gravity Wave Trains In Magnetohydrodynamics, David K. Rollins, Bhimsen K. Shivamoggi
Nonlinear Propagation Of Two-Dimensional Gravity Wave Trains In Magnetohydrodynamics, David K. Rollins, Bhimsen K. Shivamoggi
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Nonlinear evolution of modulated two-dimensional gravity wave trains in a conducting fluid subject to a tangential applied magnetic field are considered. The effect of the applied magnetic field on the stability of the modulation and on the saturation amplitude in the long-time evolution are examined.
Morphological Operations On Color Images, Lloyd J. Sartor, Arthur R. Weeks
Morphological Operations On Color Images, Lloyd J. Sartor, Arthur R. Weeks
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Morphological image processing has been widely used to process binary and grayscale images, with morphological techniques being applied to noise reduction, image enhancement, and feature detection. Relying on an ordering of the data, morphology modifies the geometrical aspects of an image: object contours in binary images and object surfaces in grayscale images. Extending morphological operators to color image processing has been problematic because it is not easy to define geometry of a vector-valued function and ordering of vectors is not straightforward We propose a new set of color morphological operators based on a combination of reduced ordering and conditional ordering …
Mathematical Model For The Irradiance Probability Density Function Of A Laser Beam Propagating Through Turbulent Media, M. A. Al-Habash, L. C. Andrews, R. L. Phillips
Mathematical Model For The Irradiance Probability Density Function Of A Laser Beam Propagating Through Turbulent Media, M. A. Al-Habash, L. C. Andrews, R. L. Phillips
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
We develop a model for the probability density function (pdf) of the irradiance fluctuations of an optical wave propagating through a turbulent medium. The model is a two-parameter distribution that is based on a doubly stochastic theory of scintillation that assumes that small-scale irradiance fluctuations are modulated by large-scale irradiance fluctuations of the propagating wave, both governed by independent gamma distributions. The resulting irradiance pdf takes the form of a generalized K distribution that we term the gamma-gamma distribution. The two parameters of the gamma-gamma pdf are determined using a recently published theory of scintillation, using only values of the …
A Unified Approach To Dynamic Modeling Of High Switching Frequency Pwm Converters, Christopher J. Iannello
A Unified Approach To Dynamic Modeling Of High Switching Frequency Pwm Converters, Christopher J. Iannello
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation will present the development of a unified approach for dynamic modeling of the PWM and soft-switching power converters. Dynamic modeling of non-linear power converters is very important for the design and stability of their closed loop control. While the use of equivalent circuits is often preferred due to simulation efficiency issues, no unified and widely applicable method for the formulation of these equivalents exists.
A review of conventional modeling technique via the method of state-space averaging will be carried out. Complete development of the averaged, equivalent circuit models for the nonlinear power switch/diode combination in modem power converters …
Scintillation Behind The Collecting Lens Of A Receiver, Clarissa A. Fleming Russell
Scintillation Behind The Collecting Lens Of A Receiver, Clarissa A. Fleming Russell
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
One of the negative effects that a laser beam experiences as it propagates through the atmosphere is intensity fluctuations or scintillation. Because scintillation-- as it pertains to laser radar and laser satellite communication systems-- is the main subject of this research, the assumption of an optical element ( such as a Gaussian lens) along the propagation path in front of the detector is valid. The mathematical addition of optical elements to the propagation path is treated using the ABCD ray matrix method. The expression for scintillation is derived, analyzed, and numerically calculated for positions to the left and right of …
Taking The Pulse Of Communication Across The Curriculum: A View From The Trenches, Deanna P. Dannels
Taking The Pulse Of Communication Across The Curriculum: A View From The Trenches, Deanna P. Dannels
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
The article describes the status of the communication across the curriculum (CXC) movement from the perspectives of CXC directors across the U.S. as of May 2001. The participants in this study provide a breadth of information about the daily life of communication across the curriculum programs nationwide. Results of this study indicate the pulse of the movement is strong, yet there are still areas for growth. Increasingly, higher education scholars, faculty in other disciplines, and members of the public are calling for communication instruction and presenting new challenges for directors and scholars to address. If CXC programs are to be …
The Bcs And Florida Election Officials, Richard C. Crepeau
The Bcs And Florida Election Officials, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Now that the state of Florida has released its incompetence and corruption from behind the facade of palm trees and beautiful beaches the true story behind the voting at the BCS can be told. The same people who control the voting in Palm Beach County, and indeed those who exercise the imprecise art of counting in Florida, are the same people who control the mysterious BCS voting on college football.

The Hers Rating Method And The Derivation Of The Normalized Modified Loads Method, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip W. Fairey
The Hers Rating Method And The Derivation Of The Normalized Modified Loads Method, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip W. Fairey
FSEC Energy Research Center®
This paper provides much of the historical background surrounding the contentious development of a national, uniform rating method for rating the energy-efficiency of homes. A full derivation of the most recently adopted rating method, the Normalized Modified Loads Method, is provided in detail and the issues and events leading up to the development of each of the succeeding methods are described.
Ever since the inclusion of Home Energy Rating Systems in the 1992 Energy Policy Act, the most contentious issue associated with them has been the development of a uniform rating method. To date, four succeeding methods have been proposed: …
