The Design And Evaluation Of A Video Game To Help Train Perspective-Taking And Empathy In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Darin Hughes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper discusses the design, implementation, and evaluation of a serious game intended to reinforce applied behavior analysis (ABA) techniques used with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by providing a low cost and easily accessible supplement to traditional methods. Past and recent research strongly supports the use of computer assisted instruction in the education of individuals with ASD (Moore & Calvert, 2000; Noor, Shahbodin, & Pee, 2012). Computer games have been shown to boost confidence and provide calming mechanisms (Griffiths, 2003) while being a safe environment for social exploration and learning (Moore, Cheng, McGrath, & Powell, 2005). Games increase …
Electronic Properties And Atomic Scale Microscopy Of Two Dimensional Materials: Graphene And Molybdenum Disulfide, Jyoti Katoch
Electronic Properties And Atomic Scale Microscopy Of Two Dimensional Materials: Graphene And Molybdenum Disulfide, Jyoti Katoch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Novel two dimensional nanoscale materials like graphene and metal dichalcogenides (MX2) have attracted the attention of the scientific community, due to their rich physics and wide range of potential applications. It has been shown that novel graphene based transparent conductors and radiofrequency transistors are competitive with the existing technologies. Graphene’s properties are influenced sensitively by adsorbates and substrates. As such not surprisingly, physical properties of graphene are found to have a large variability, which cannot be controlled at the synthesis level, reducing the utility of graphene. As a part of my doctorate dissertation, I have developed atomic hydrogen as a …

The study also revealed that although other countries had their brightest and most advantaged students participate in …
Comparison Of Casimir , Elastic, Electrostatic Forces For A Micro-Cantilever, Ammar Alhasan
Comparison Of Casimir , Elastic, Electrostatic Forces For A Micro-Cantilever, Ammar Alhasan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Casimir force is a cause of stiction (adhesion) between metal surfaces in Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS). Casimir Force depends strongly on the separation of the two surfaces and the contact area. This thesis reviews the theory and prior experimental demonstrations of the Casimir force. Then the Casimir attractive force is calculated for a particular MEMS cantilever device, in which the metal cantilever tip is required to repeatedly touch and release from a metal tip pad on the substrate surface in response to a periodic driving electrostatic force. The elastic force due to the bending of the cantilever support arms is …
A Lab-Scale Experimental Framework For Studying The Phenomenon Of Autorotation, Sigitas Rimkus
A Lab-Scale Experimental Framework For Studying The Phenomenon Of Autorotation, Sigitas Rimkus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While wind energy has emerged as a popular source of renewable energy, the traditional wind turbine has an inherent limitation, namely that it only generates power in the presence of sufficiently high and consistent wind speeds. As a result, wind farms are typically built in areas with a high probability of the required wind speeds, which are geographically sparse. One way of overcoming this drawback is to tap into the energy available in winds at high altitudes which are not only consistent and of high magnitude, but also globally pervasive. An airborne wind energy device based upon the phenomenon of …

Nonlinear Integrated Photonics On Silicon And Gallium Arsenide Substrates, Jichi Ma
Nonlinear Integrated Photonics On Silicon And Gallium Arsenide Substrates, Jichi Ma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Silicon photonics is nowadays a mature technology and is on the verge of becoming a blossoming industry. Silicon photonics has also been pursued as a platform for integrated nonlinear optics based on Raman and Kerr effects. In recent years, more futuristic directions have been pursued by various groups. For instance, the realm of silicon photonics has been expanded beyond the well-established near-infrared wavelengths and into the mid-infrared (3 - 5 µm). In this wavelength range, the omnipresent hurdle of nonlinear silicon photonics in the telecommunication band, i.e., nonlinear losses due to two-photon absorption, is inherently nonexistent. With the lack of …
Spectrum Map And Its Application In Cognitive Radio Networks, Saptarshi Debroy
Spectrum Map And Its Application In Cognitive Radio Networks, Saptarshi Debroy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent measurements on radio spectrum usage have revealed the abundance of underutilized bands of spectrum that belong to licensed users. This necessitated the paradigm shift from static to dynamic spectrum access. Cognitive radio based secondary networks that utilize such unused spectrum holes in the licensed band, have been proposed as a possible solution to the spectrum crisis. The idea is to detect times when a particular licensed band is unused and use it for transmission without causing interference to the licensed user. We argue that prior knowledge about occupancy of such bands and the corresponding achievable performance metrics can potentially …
On The Range Of The Attenuated Radon Transform In Strictly Convex Sets., Kamran Sadiq
On The Range Of The Attenuated Radon Transform In Strictly Convex Sets., Kamran Sadiq
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the present dissertation, we characterize the range of the attenuated Radon transform of zero, one, and two tensor fields, supported in strictly convex set. The approach is based on a Hilbert transform associated with A-analytic functions of A. Bukhgeim. We first present new necessary and sufficient conditions for a function to be in the range of the attenuated Radon transform of a sufficiently smooth function supported in the convex set. The approach is based on an explicit Hilbert transform associated with traces of the boundary of A-analytic functions in the sense of A. Bukhgeim. We then uses the range …

Specialty Fiber Lasers And Novel Fiber Devices, Clemence Jollivet
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
At the Dawn of the 21st century, the field of specialty optical fibers experienced a scientific revolution with the introduction of the stack-and-draw technique, a multi-steps and advanced fiber fabrication method, which enabled the creation of well-controlled micro-structured designs. Since then, an extremely wide variety of finely tuned fiber structures have been demonstrated including novel materials and novel designs. As the complexity of the fiber design increased, highly-controlled fabrication processes became critical. To determine the ability of a novel fiber design to deliver light with properties tailored according to a specific application, several mode analysis techniques were reported, addressing the …
Visual Analysis Of Extremely Dense Crowded Scenes, Haroon Idrees
Visual Analysis Of Extremely Dense Crowded Scenes, Haroon Idrees
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Visual analysis of dense crowds is particularly challenging due to large number of individuals, occlusions, clutter, and fewer pixels per person which rarely occur in ordinary surveillance scenarios. This dissertation aims to address these challenges in images and videos of extremely dense crowds containing hundreds to thousands of humans. The goal is to tackle the fundamental problems of counting, detecting and tracking people in such images and videos using visual and contextual cues that are automatically derived from the crowded scenes. For counting in an image of extremely dense crowd, we propose to leverage multiple sources of information to compute …
Lp Fiber Mode Converters Using Holographic Phase Mask In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Aniket Patil
Lp Fiber Mode Converters Using Holographic Phase Mask In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Aniket Patil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, an investigation was undertaken to research the use of holographic phase masks (HPMs) in photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass as mode converters for linearly polarized (LP) fiber modes. A Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) was used to generate higher-order transverse fiber modes LPm,n. Under proper incidence condition on the holographic device, LPm,n modes are diffracted and simultaneously converted into higher order or lower order LP modes. The process was analyzed by imaging the far field on a CCD camera. It is demonstrated that using this novel method of converting transverse fiber modes several combinations of LP modes can be converted …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chitosan (CS) is a man-made sugar based biopolymer derived from chitin, the second most abundant natural polymer after cellulose. Chitin is sourced from crustacean species such as shrimps and crabs. The chemical structure of chitin contains N-Acetyl D-glucosamine monomer units which forms CS upon deacetylation. In CS, ?-(1-4) linked D-glucosamine units are randomly distributed. Approximately 75% - 80% sugar units contains primary amine groups in commercially available low molecular weight CS. Biodegradability, low toxicity, mucoadhesive and transfecting properties of CS polymer are attractive for applications as oral and nasal drug delivery systems. Chitosan polymer is water insoluble at neutral pH. …
Effects Of A Mathematics Graphic Organizer And Virtual Video Modeling On The Word Problem Solving Abilities Of Students With Disabilities, Lauren Delisio
Effects Of A Mathematics Graphic Organizer And Virtual Video Modeling On The Word Problem Solving Abilities Of Students With Disabilities, Lauren Delisio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over the last decade, the inclusion of students with disabilities (SWD) in the general education classroom has increased. Currently, 60% of SWD spend 80% or more of their school day in the general education classroom (U.S. Department of Education, 2013). This includes students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), a developmental disability characterized by impairments in behavior, language, and social skills (American Psychological Association, 2013). Many of these SWD struggle with mathematics in the elementary grades; fewer than 20% of SWD are proficient in mathematics when they begin middle school, compared to 45% of their peers without disabilities. Furthermore, 83% of …
Objectively Defining Scenario Complexity: Towards Automated, Adaptive Scenario-Based Training, Robert Dunn
Objectively Defining Scenario Complexity: Towards Automated, Adaptive Scenario-Based Training, Robert Dunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Effective Scenario-Based Training (SBT) is sequenced in an efficient trajectory from novice to mastery and is well-grounded in pedagogically sound instructional strategies and learning theory. Adaptive, automated SBT attempts to sequence scenarios according to the performance of the student and implement the sequence without human agency. The source of these scenarios may take the form of a matrix constructed by Instructional Systems Designers (ISD), software engineers or trainers. The domain being instructed may contain procedures or concepts that are easily differentiated thus allowing quick and accurate determination of difficulty. In this instance, the sequencing of the SBT is relatively simple. …
A Short Window Granger Causality Approach To Identify Brain Functional Pattern Associated With Changes Of Performance Induced By Sleep Deprivation, Muyuan Li
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The comprehensive effect of sleep deprivation on biological and behavioral functions largely remains unknown. There is evidence to support that human sleep must be of sufficient duration and physiological continuity to ensure neurocognitive performance while we are waking. Insufficient sleep would lead to high risk of human-error related to accidents, injuries or even fatal outcomes. However, in modern society, more and more people suffer from sleep deprivation because of the increasing social, academic or occupational demand. It is important to study the effect of sleep deprivation, not only on task performance, but also on neurocognitive functions. Recent research that has …
Comparison Of Traditional Educative Delivery To Online Education In United States History As Measured By Florida's End-Of-Course Examinations In A Large Urban School District In Central Florida, William Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Student participation in online courses has been growing steadily for the past decade, and the trend appears to continue the growth in this form of instructional delivery method for the foreseeable future (iNACOL, 2012). To date, little research exploring student success rates exists in the social studies. This particular study was conducted to examine what differences, if any, existed in the End-Of-Course (EOC) scores of 11th grade United States history students who took the course in a traditional, face-to-face format versus students who took the same course online through Florida Virtual School. For this study, proper permission was received from …
Defining And Building Excellence: A Model For Professional Development At Arete Charter School, Shloe Kerness
Defining And Building Excellence: A Model For Professional Development At Arete Charter School, Shloe Kerness
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the U.S., there is increased awareness that what teachers know and are able to do play a significant role in the achievement of their students (Sanders & Rivers, 1996). Consequently, there is an unprecedented interest in improving instruction, a job that is normally assumed by the schools and school districts where teachers are employed. However, long-established professional development options provided by school districts usually fail to have any significant positive impact on teachers' instructional practices and often have the unintended consequence of making teachers feel more like workers on an assembly line than professionals doing emotionally complicated work (Borko …
Global Perspectives Of Pre-Service Teachers: A Comparative Study, Cynthia Poole
Global Perspectives Of Pre-Service Teachers: A Comparative Study, Cynthia Poole
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The importance of global education cannot be overstated in modern American society. A crucial first step to promoting global perspectives in the K-12 classroom is to ensure that the teachers have developed their own global perspectives. Multiple global education frameworks have suggested that two keys to globalizing teacher education curricula are the integration of global content courses and participation in co-curricular cross-cultural experiences. Therefore, this study sought to determine the extent to which global content courses and co-curricular cross-cultural experiences had been integrated into the teacher preparation of pre-service teachers in multiple certification areas at a large public university in …
Advanced Liquid Crystal Materials For Display And Photonic Applications, Yuan Chen
Advanced Liquid Crystal Materials For Display And Photonic Applications, Yuan Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) has been widely used in smartphones, pads, laptops, computer monitors, and large screen televisions, just to name a few. A great deal of effort has been delved into wide viewing angle, high resolution, low power consumption, and vivid color. However, relatively slow response time and low transmittance remain as technical challenges. To improve response time, several approaches have been developed, such as low viscosity liquid crystals, overdrive and undershoot voltage schemes, thin cell gap with a high birefringence liquid crystal, and elevated temperature operation. The state-of-the-art gray-to-gray response time of a nematic LC device …
Generation And Characterization Of Sub-70 Isolated Attosecond Pulses, Qi Zhang
Generation And Characterization Of Sub-70 Isolated Attosecond Pulses, Qi Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dynamics occurring on microscopic scales, such as electronic motion inside atoms and molecules, are governed by quantum mechanics. However, the Schroedinger equation is usually too complicated to solve analytically for systems other than the hydrogen atom. Even for some simple atoms such as helium, it still takes months to do a full numerical analysis. Therefore, practical problems are often solved only after simplification. The results are then compared with the experimental outcome in both the spectral and temporal domain. For accurate experimental comparison, temporal resolution on the attosecond scale is required. This had not been achieved until the first demonstration …
High Performance Three-Dimensional Display Based On Polymer-Stabilized Blue Phase Liquid Crystal, Yifan Liu
High Performance Three-Dimensional Display Based On Polymer-Stabilized Blue Phase Liquid Crystal, Yifan Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Autostereoscopic 2D/3D (two-dimension/three-dimension) switchable display has been attracting great interest in research and practical applications for several years. Among different autostereoscopic solutions, direction-multiplexed 3D displays based on microlens array or parallax barrier are viewed as the most promising candidates, due to their compatibility with conventional 2D display technologies. These 2D/3D switchable display system designs rely on fast switching display panels and photonics devices, including adaptive focus microlens array and switchable slit array. Polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystal (PS-BPLC) material provides a possible solution to meet the aforementioned fast response time requirement. However, present display and photonic devices based on blue …
Holographic Recording And Applications Of Multiplexed Volume Bragg Gratings In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Daniel Ott
Holographic Recording And Applications Of Multiplexed Volume Bragg Gratings In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Daniel Ott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent developments in holographic recording of volume Bragg gratings (VBGs) in photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass have demonstrated their utility as components in high power laser systems for spectral narrowing, transverse mode control, beam combining, and pulse stretching/compression. VBG structures are capable of diffracting incident light into a single diffraction order with high efficiency given the Bragg condition is met. The Bragg condition depends on both the wavelength and angle of the incident light making VBGs useful for filtering and manipulating both the wavelength and angular spectrum of a source. This dissertation expands upon previous research in PTR VBGs by investigating multiplexed …

Entangled Photon Pairs In Disordered Photonic Lattices, Lane Martin
Entangled Photon Pairs In Disordered Photonic Lattices, Lane Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Photonic lattices consisting of arrays of evanescently coupled waveguides fabricated with precisely controlled parameters have enabled the study of discrete optical phenomena, both classical and quantum, and the simulation of other physical phenomena governed by the same dynamics. In this dissertation, I have experimentally demonstrated transverse Anderson localization of classical light in arrays with off-diagonal coupling disorder and investigated theoretically and experimentally the propagation of entangled photon pairs through such disordered systems. I discovered a new phenomenon, Anderson co-localization, in which a spatially entangled photon pair in a correlated transversally extended state localizes in the correlation space, though neither photon …
Dynamical Spin Injection In Graphene, Simranjeet Singh
Dynamical Spin Injection In Graphene, Simranjeet Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within the exciting current trend to explore novel low-dimensional systems, the possibility to inject pure spin currents in graphene and other two-dimensional crystals has attracted considerable attention in the past few years. The theoretical prediction of large spin relaxation times and experimentally observed mesoscopic-scale spin diffusion lengths places graphene as a promising base system for future spintronics devices. This is due to the unique characteristics intrinsic to the two-dimensional lattice of carbon atoms forming graphene, such as the lack of nuclear spins and weak spin-orbit coupling of the charge carriers. Interestingly for some spintronic applications, the latter can be chemically …
Inversion Of The Broken Ray Transform, Roman Krylov
Inversion Of The Broken Ray Transform, Roman Krylov
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The broken ray transform (BRT) is an integral of a function along a union of two rays with a common vertex. Consider an X-ray beam scanning an object of interest. The ray undergoes attenuation and scatters in all directions inside the object. This phenomena may happen repeatedly until the photons either exit the object or are completely absorbed. In our work we assume the single scattering approximation when the intensity of the rays scattered more than once is negligibly small. Among all paths that the scattered rays travel inside the object we pick the one that is a union of …
