Detecting Threats From Constituent Parts: A Fuzzy Signal Detection Theory Analysis Of Individual Differences, Ida Van De Car
Detecting Threats From Constituent Parts: A Fuzzy Signal Detection Theory Analysis Of Individual Differences, Ida Van De Car
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Signal detection theory (SDT) provides a theoretical framework for describing performance on decision making tasks, and fuzzy signal detection theory (FSDT) extends this description to include tasks in which there are levels of uncertainty regarding the categorization of stimulus events. Specifically, FSDT can be used to quantify the degree to which an event is 'signal-like', i.e., the degree to which a stimulus event can be characterized by both signal and non-signal properties. For instance, an improvised explosive device (IED) poses little threat when missing key elements of its assembly (a stimulus of low, but not zero, signal strength) whereas the …
Convective Heat Transfer In Quasi-One-Dimensional Magnetic Fluid In Horizontal Field And Temperature Gradients, Jun Huang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this work we studied the convective heat transfer in a magnetic fluid in both zero and applied magnetic fields. The natural convection is observed in a quasi-one dimensional magnetic fluid in a horizontal temperature gradient. The horizontal non-homogeneous magnetic fields were applied across the sample cell either parallel or anti-parallel to the temperature gradient. The temperature profile was measured by eight thermocouples and temperature sensitive paint. The flow velocity field and streamlines were obtained by optical flow method. Calculated Nusselt numbers, Rayleigh number, and Grashof number show that the convective flow is the main heat transfer mechanism in applied …

Development Of A Nano-Sensing Approach And A Portable Prototype For Real-Time Detection And Quantification Of Free Mercury In Stream-Flow: Combining Science And Engineering In Pro Of The Environment, Warinya Chemnasiri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mercury (Hg) is a well-known hazardous environmental contaminant existing in several forms, but all are toxic to human in one way or the others. Since Hg usually settles into water polluting the environment and accumulating in living organisms, it is crucial to monitor Hg levels in the aquatic ecosystem. Although there are many well established techniques currently used to detect Hg, most of them require elaborate and time-consuming sample preparation and pre-concentration procedures, as well as costly and bulky equipment that limit their practical application in the field. In order to overcome the existent limitations in Hg determination methods, Hernandez …
Transverse Mode Selection And Brightness Enhancement In Laser Resonators By Means Of Volume Bragg Gratings, Brian Anderson
Transverse Mode Selection And Brightness Enhancement In Laser Resonators By Means Of Volume Bragg Gratings, Brian Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The design of high power lasers requires large mode areas to overcome various intensity driven nonlinear effects. Increasing the aperture size within the laser can overcome these effects, but typically result in multi-transverse mode output and reduced beam quality, limiting the brightness of the system. As one possible solution, the angular selectivity of a diffractive optical element is proposed as a spatial filter, allowing for the design of compact high brightness sources not possible with conventional methods of transverse mode selection. This thesis explores the angular selectivity of volume Bragg gratings (VBGs) and their use as spatial transverse mode filters …

?-Conjugated systems have been the focus of study in recent years in order to understand their charge transport and optical properties for use in organic electronic devices, fluorescence bioimaging, sensors, and 3D optical data storage (ODS), among others. As a result, several molecular building blocks have been designed, allowing new frontiers to be realized. While various successful building blocks have been fine-tuned at both the electronic and molecular structure level to provide advanced photophysical and optoelectronic characteristics, the azulene framework has been under-appreciated despite its unique electronic and optical properties. Among several attributes, azulenes are vibrant blue naturally occurring hydrocarbons …
Mahalanobis Kernel-Based Support Vector Data Description For Detection Of Large Shifts In Mean Vector, Vu Nguyen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Statistical process control (SPC) applies the science of statistics to various process control in order to provide higher-quality products and better services. The K chart is one among the many important tools that SPC offers. Creation of the K chart is based on Support Vector Data Description (SVDD), a popular data classifier method inspired by Support Vector Machine (SVM). As any methods associated with SVM, SVDD benefits from a wide variety of choices of kernel, which determines the effectiveness of the whole model. Among the most popular choices is the Euclidean distance-based Gaussian kernel, which enables SVDD to obtain a …

This study investigates the misuse of prescription stimulants among undergraduates for a variety of different purposes, including: academic, other instrumental, and recreational. This research is important as existing literature as well as national level surveillance data indicates a substantial increase in this type of prescription drug misuse, especially among young adults aged 18-25. Drawing from several theoretical frameworks, this research focuses on how academic strain, social norms, and gender influence prescription stimulant misuse among undergraduates. Roughly 900 quantitative surveys were collected that specifically address undergraduate prescription stimulant misuse. The results indicate that college students are at an increased likelihood of …
Three Essays On Compensation And The Board Of Directors, Ian Cherry
Three Essays On Compensation And The Board Of Directors, Ian Cherry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In my first essay, I find a statistically and economically significant director-specific component in CEO pay following the enactment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX). In the cross-section of firms, directors that award relatively higher (lower) CEO pay in one firm also award relatively higher (lower) CEO pay in other firms of whose boards they are members during the year. Based on my estimates, the director-specific component is responsible for around ±3.5% of total CEO pay or around ±$230,000 per CEO-year on average. In addition to affecting CEO pay levels, the director-specific component also has a significant effect on …

A Cooperative Path Planning Algorithm For A Multiple Mobile Robot System In A Dynamic Environment, Wentao Yu, Jun Peng, Xiaoyong Zhang, Kuo-Chi Lin
A Cooperative Path Planning Algorithm For A Multiple Mobile Robot System In A Dynamic Environment, Wentao Yu, Jun Peng, Xiaoyong Zhang, Kuo-Chi Lin
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
A practical path planning method for a multiple mobile robot system (MMRS) requires handling both the collision-free constraint and the kinematic constraint of real robots, the latter of which has to date been neglected by most path planning methods. In this paper, we present a practical cooperative path planning algorithm for MMRS in a dynamic environment. First, each robot uses an analytical method to plan an obstacle-avoidance path. Then, a distributed prioritized scheme is introduced to realize cooperative path planning. In the scheme, each robot calculates a priority value according to its situation at each instant in time, which will …

Underlying Scaling Relationships Between Solar Activity And Geomagnetic Activity Revealed By Multifractal Analyses, Zu-Guo Yu, Vo Anh, Richard Eastes
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
This paper identifies some scaling relationships between solar activity and geomagnetic activity. We examine the scaling properties of hourly data for two geomagnetic indices (a(p) and AE), two solar indices (solar X-rays X-l and solar flux F10.7), and two inner heliospheric indices (ion density Ni and flow speed Vs) over the period 1995-2001 by the universal multifractal approach and the traditional multifractal analysis. We found that the universal multifractal model (UMM) provides a good fit to the empirical K(q) and tau(q) curves of these time series. The estimated values of the Levy index alpha in the UMM indicate that multifractality …

Treatment Matching In Ptsd: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Based On Therapeutic Mechanisms Of Action, Benjamin Trachik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current study takes an initial step toward deriving a method for empirically based, theory-driven treatment matching in a military population suffering from PTSD. Along with the more overt symptoms of PTSD (e.g., persistent hyperarousal), secondary cognitive symptoms have also been shown to be significantly associated with avoidance and intrusive symptoms, as well as contribute to functional impairment. Based on the factor analytic and treatment literature for PTSD, it appears that there are two central mechanisms associated with beneficial therapeutic change that underlies both CPT and PE treatments (i.e., habituation, changes in cognitions). Additionally, different traumatic events and peritraumatic responses …
Principals' Perceptions On Educating Elementary Students Who Are Gifted, Ingrid Cumming
Principals' Perceptions On Educating Elementary Students Who Are Gifted, Ingrid Cumming
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Students who are gifted need student centered academic challenges and authentic problems to spark reflection and enhance student outcomes. When academic needs are not met, students who are gifted may not reach their full academic potential and may lose motivation for learning. A primary reason for students who are gifted to underachieve in academics is equated to school factors including lack of instructional resources, social/emotional support, and teachers who are unprepared to teach students who are gifted. The purpose of this phenomenological research study is to explore the perceptions and lived experiences of participating elementary school principals in an urban school …

The Safe Removal Of Frozen Air From The Annulus Of A Liquid Hydrogen Storage Tank, Angela Krenn
The Safe Removal Of Frozen Air From The Annulus Of A Liquid Hydrogen Storage Tank, Angela Krenn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Large Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) storage tanks are vital infrastructure for NASA. Eventually, air may leak into the evacuated and perlite filled annular region of these tanks. Although the vacuum level is monitored in this region, the extremely cold temperature causes all but the helium and neon constituents of air to freeze. A small, often unnoticeable pressure rise is the result. As the leak persists, the quantity of frozen air increases, as does the thermal conductivity of the insulation system. Consequently, a notable increase in commodity boiloff is often the first indicator of an air leak. Severe damage can then result …
Nanoscale Control Of Gap-Plasmon Enhanced Optical Processes, Chatdanai Lumdee
Nanoscale Control Of Gap-Plasmon Enhanced Optical Processes, Chatdanai Lumdee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Surface plasmon resonances of metal nanostructures have been studied intensely in recent years. The strong plasmon-mediated electric field enhancement and field confinement well beyond the diffraction limit has been demonstrated to improve the performance of optical devices including ultrasensitive sensors, light emitters, and optical absorbers. A plasmon resonance mode of particular recent interest is the gap plasmon resonance that occurs on closely spaced metallic structures. In contrast to plasmon resonances supported by isolated metal nanostructures, coupled nanostructures provide additional spectral and spatial control over the plasmon resonance response. For example, the resonance frequencies of metal nanoparticle dimers depend strongly on …
Optical Propagation Of Self-Sustaining Wavefronts And Nonlinear Dynamics In Parabolic Multimode Fibers, Matthew Mills
Optical Propagation Of Self-Sustaining Wavefronts And Nonlinear Dynamics In Parabolic Multimode Fibers, Matthew Mills
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to introduce my work which has generally been focused on optical wavefronts that have the unusual property of resisting commonplace phenomena such as diffraction and dispersion. Interestingly, these special beams are found both in linear and nonlinear situations. For example, in the linear regime, localized spatio-temporal waves which resemble the spherical harmonic symmetries of the hydrogen quantum orbitals can simultaneously negotiate both diffractive and dispersive effects. In the nonlinear regime, dressed optical filaments can be arranged to propagate multi-photon produced plasma channels orders of magnitude longer than expected. The first portion of this dissertation …
Urban School Principal Rated As Highly Effective: Support And Culture For Co-Teaching, Michelle San
Urban School Principal Rated As Highly Effective: Support And Culture For Co-Teaching, Michelle San
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The recent revisions to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004) and the passing of the No Child Left Behind Act (2001) promoted a movement toward meaningful inclusion, which has led to an increase in interest in co-teaching (Friend, Cook, Hurley-Chamberlain, & Shamberger, 2010; Nichols, Dowdy, & Nichols, 2010). When co-teaching is effectively executed both students with and without disabilities benefit academically and socially (Friend & Cook, 2007). Researchers indicate that a key factor in effective co-teaching is administrative support (Friend et al.; Dieker & Murawski, 2003; Murawski & Dieker, 2008; Murawski & Dieker, 2004; Scruggs et al., 2007). …

Modeling Autocorrelation And Sample Weights In Panel Data: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study, Parul Acharya
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the interactive or joint influence of autocorrelative processes (autoregressive-AR, moving average-MA, and autoregressive moving average-ARMA) and sample weights present in a longitudinal panel data set. Specifically, to what extent are the sample estimates influenced when autocorrelation (which is usually present in a panel data having correlated observations and errors) and sample weights (complex sample design feature used in longitudinal data having multi-stage sampling design) are modeled versus when they are not modeled or either one of them is taken into account. The current study utilized a Monte Carlo simulation design to vary the type and magnitude of …
Towards High-Flux Isolated Attosecond Pulses With A 200 Tw Cpa, Eric Cunningham
Towards High-Flux Isolated Attosecond Pulses With A 200 Tw Cpa, Eric Cunningham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Attosecond pulses have been developed as a means for investigating phenomena that proceed on the order of the atomic unit of time (24 as). Unfortunately, these extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses by themselves contain too few photons to initiate nonlinear dynamics or dress states in an attosecond pump--attosecond probe scheme. As a result, most attosecond experiments thus far have featured complementary near infrared (NIR) femtosecond lasers for instigating electron dynamics. In order to access the benefits of all-attosecond measurements and open attosecond physics to new fields of exploration, the photon flux of these pulses must be increased. One way to boost …

Metalinguistic awareness (MA) in the context of the present study is the ability to deconstruct and analyze a language's intricate systems, and by doing so, better understand how these systems work. More specifically for the present study, the investigation focused on preservice teachers' MA in relation to grammar and its importance for their future students' understanding of language. Language is at the core of any content area in students' academic lives and it will continue to permeate all aspects of their studies at all ages. As such, language-related issues should be at the front and center of preservice teachers' preparation. …
Optimization Of Molecular Beacon-Based Multicomponent Probes For Analysis Of Nucleic Acids, Maria Stancescu
Optimization Of Molecular Beacon-Based Multicomponent Probes For Analysis Of Nucleic Acids, Maria Stancescu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Detection of single nucleotide substitutions (SNS) in DNA and RNA has a growing importance in biology and medicine. One traditional approach for recognition of SNS takes advantage of hybridization probes that bind target nucleic acids followed by measuring ?Tm, the difference in melting temperatures of matched and mismatched hybrids. The approach enables SNS differentiation at elevated temperatures (usually 40-65oC) often only in a narrow range of < 10oC and requires high-resolution melting devices. Here we demonstrate that a specially designed DNA probe (X sensor) can broaden ?Tm from ~10oC to ~16oC and distinguish SNS in the interval of ~5-40oC. Therefore, there is no need for heating or measuring Tm for accurate SNS differentiation. Our data indicate that this wide differentiation range is in part due to the non-equilibrium hybridization conditions. Further we explored the idea that it is possible to improve the performance of an X sensor operable in close to equilibrium conditions by shifting its operability to non-equilibrium conditions. One way to achieve this is to introduce as many as possible structured ligands in analyte's dissociated state. Here we show that by introducing the maximum possible conformational constraints in X probe it is possible to shift its operation to non-equilibrium conditions and to improve its selectivity at temperatures < 15oC. Thus, this work points towards a new strategy for the design of highly selective hybridization sensors which operate in non-equilibrium conditions at close to room temperature. The X sensors could be utilized in qPCR, microarrays, as well as RNA analysis in living cells and for ambient temperature point-of-care diagnostics. In the last part of this work, X sensors were used in real time detection of PCR products. The sensors were optimized to operate in PCR buffer with optimal Mg2+ concentration. They were able to detect the target amplicon together with nonspecific products. The results presented here suggest that X sensors might be adopted for real time PCR format.

Investigation Of Optical And Electronic Properties Of Au Decorated Mos2, Udai Bhanu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Achieving tunability of two dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) functions calls for the introduction of hybrid 2D materials by means of localized interactions with zero dimensional (0D) materials. A metal-semiconductor interface, as in gold (Au) - molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), is of great interest from the standpoint of fundamental science as it constitutes an outstanding platform to investigate optical and electronic properties due to charge transfer. The applied aspects of such systems introduce new options for electronics, photovoltaics, detectors, catalysis, and biosensing. Here in this dissertation, we study the charge transfer interaction between Au nanoparticals and MoS2 flakes and its …
Strategies For Enhanced Genetic Analysis Of Trace Dna From Touch Dna Evidence And Household Dust, Katherine Farash
Strategies For Enhanced Genetic Analysis Of Trace Dna From Touch Dna Evidence And Household Dust, Katherine Farash
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In forensic casework it is often necessary to obtain genetic profiles from crime scene samples that contain increasingly smaller amounts of genetic material, called Low Template DNA (LTDNA). Two examples of LTDNA sources are touch DNA evidence and dust bunnies. Touch DNA refers to DNA that is left behind through casual contact of a donor with an object or another person. Touch DNA can be used to prove a suspect was present at a crime scene. Dust bunnies, or dust conglomerates, typically contain trapped shed skin cells of anyone in the vicinity along with fibers, dirt, hair, and other trace …
