A Mathematical Model For Predicting Animal Population Persistence On Fragmented Landscapes, Allyson Jones Jan 2021

A Mathematical Model For Predicting Animal Population Persistence On Fragmented Landscapes, Allyson Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The effects of roads, buildings, and cities on animal populations are widespread and, often times, disastrous. These structures fragment animals' homes, inhibiting their ability to obtain essential resources and to reproduce. The question arises then: Under what circumstances can an animal population persist in a fragmented landscape? To attempt to answer this question, we present a spatially explicit reaction-diffusion model with varying growth and diffusion rates that incorporates animal behavior at points where habitats are fragmented for four different habitats. The outcome of extinction or persistence of the animal population is determined by examining the effects of changing parameters on …

Ground Movements And Nonlinear-Inelastic Response Of Buildings Induced By Excavations In Glacial Clay Deposits, A. Felipe Uribe-Henao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The analysis of ground movements and nonlinear response of buildings induced by excavations in glacial clay deposits is conducted using finite element models built in PLAXIS2D and OpenSees. PLAXIS2D was used to simulate the performance of an urban cofferdam excavation braced with a concrete bracing system. Measured ground movements were compared with the computed response, and the influence of the temperature, installation, and curing effects on the concrete bracing is evaluated. Concrete time-dependent effects contributed to 32% of the maximum lateral wall movements. The numerical studies are expanded in a second finite element analysis to characterize the coupled fluid-solid response …

"I Drink (Responsibly), Therefore I Am": Development Of The Personal Assessment Of Responsible Drinking Identity, Angelina Leary Jan 2021

"I Drink (Responsibly), Therefore I Am": Development Of The Personal Assessment Of Responsible Drinking Identity, Angelina Leary

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

PURPOSE: Identity has long been a human phenomenon, questioned and pondered by many thinkers. Recently, changes in identity have been argued to be the driving force behind behavioral change, and therefore interventions should be viewed within the context of identity change. While several measures of a drinker's identity exist, no measure examines the idiosyncrasies of a Responsible Drinker's Identity, an aim many alcohol-related interventions target. The current study created a responsible drinker identity measure, the Personal Assessment of Responsible Drinking Identity, or PARDI. METHOD: Two studies and a follow-up were used to develop and assess the psychometric properties of the …

High Speed Modulation Characteristics Of Semiconductor Nanolasers And Coupled Ring Laser Systems, Chi Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Optical communication systems require light sources that can be modulated with high speeds. However, the modulation bandwidth of laser diodes is typically limited by an intrinsic value, its relaxation resonance frequency. In order to circumvent this limitation, a number of methods have been proposed to boost the modulation speed, including optical injection locking, quantum dots lasers with large differential gain, push-pull modulation in composite lasers. This dissertation explores two new approaches for enhancing the direct modulation bandwidth of semiconductor quantum well laser diodes. Lasers with strong spontaneous emission have been shown to exhibit a high-speed performance theoretically. It is expected …

A visible and Infrared (IR) range dual beam frequency comb Fourier transform spectrometer was developed. Using dual mode-locked Ti:Sapphire lasers a comb-interferogram was generated in the visible range. This spectrum was calculated and used to measure the transmittance of a Nd-doped crystal. The system was further developed to generate an IR interferogram by Difference Frequency Generation (DFG) using a Gallium Selenide (GaSe) crystal placed in the mode-locked pump beam. Numerical work was done to calculate the expected DFG spectrum confirming the necessary IR range can be reached. This has been conducted in support of an IR holographic spectroscopic microscopy spatial …

Enhancement And Evaluation Of Proton Pencil Beam Spot Placement Algorithms, Mahboob Ur Rehman Jan 2021

Enhancement And Evaluation Of Proton Pencil Beam Spot Placement Algorithms, Mahboob Ur Rehman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) in the form of pencil beam scanning (PBS) has shown improvement in treatment plan quality as compared to conventional proton and photon-based radiotherapy techniques. However, in IMPT maintaining a sharp lateral dose falloff is crucial for sparing organs at risk (OARs), especially when they are in close proximity to the target volume. The most common approach to improve lateral dose falloff is through the use of physical beam shaping devices, such as brass apertures or collimator-based systems. This work has shown that IMPT can be further improved by implementation of advanced spot placement techniques by …

Crash Analysis And Development Of Safety Performance Functions For Florida Roads In The Framework Of The Context Classification System, Ma'en Al-Omari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Nowadays, technology is employed in many safety applications and countermeasures that would enhance traffic safety by influencing some crash-related factors. Therefore, crash-related factors must be determined for every roadway element by the development of safety performance functions. Safety performance functions (SPF) are employed to predict crash counts at the different roadway elements. Several SPFs have been developed for the various roadway elements based on different classifications such as functional classification and area type. Since a more detailed classification of roadway elements leads to more accurate crash predictions, multiple states have developed new system to categorize roads based on a comprehensive …

Topology And Megnetism In F-Electron Systems, Firoza Kabir Jan 2021

Topology And Megnetism In F-Electron Systems, Firoza Kabir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Topological insulators are insulators in the bulk but permit spin-polarized electrons to flow on their surface. Till date, non-magnetic topological materials have been extensively studied. However, due to the complex symmetries of magnetic crystals as well as theoretical and experimental difficulties associated with modeling and measuring quantum magnets, only a few magnetic materials have been explored so far. Therefore, by utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), along with first-principles calculations, and magneto-transport measurements, we have chosen one doped and four intrinsic magnetic materials to study the interplay between magnetic order and nontrivial topology. First, we have observed a single topological non-trivial …

Superconductivity And Topological Properties In A Topological Semimetal, K A M Hasan Siddiquee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Topological superconductors (TSCs) in which superconductivity and topological properties are combined are characterized by topologically protected gapless states in the superconducting gaps. Realized in the gapless states of TSCs, Majorana fermions, which are particles and their own antiparticles, have crucial importance in quantum computation and spintronic device applications because of the exotic nature. Despite extensive study for the confirmation of TSCs, the observation of Majorana fermions in bulk superconductors has not been settled yet. Recently, the binary stannide semimetal CaSn3 with a cubic structure has been proposed to be a promising candidate for realizing topological superconductivity. In this dissertation, to …

Analysis Of Sexual Lubricants As A Form Of Trace Evidence For Sexual Assault Cases, Brooke Baumgarten Jan 2021

Analysis Of Sexual Lubricants As A Form Of Trace Evidence For Sexual Assault Cases, Brooke Baumgarten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

A major gap in sexual assault casework is demonstrated when DNA is not recovered. Oftentimes, if DNA evidence is not present on the collection swabs, the sexual assault kit (SAK) is not further analyzed. Due to the "CSI effect," DNA is commonly understood as highly identifiable evidence, potentially leading to increased condom usage to eliminate or reduce DNA transfer during a sexual assault. Therefore, the analysis of condoms and sexual lubricants is pertinent. The purpose of this research is to develop analytical protocols to potentially connect unknown substances recovered in a SAK to known lubricant reference samples. Sexual lubricants were …

A Deep Learning Approach For Learning Human Gait Signature, Alexander Matasa Jan 2021

A Deep Learning Approach For Learning Human Gait Signature, Alexander Matasa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

With advancements in biometric securities, focus has increased on utilizing gait as a means of recognition. Gait describes the unique walking pattern present in humans and has shown promising results in person re-identification tasks. Unlike other biometric features, gait is unique in that it is a subconscious behavior minimizing the risk of purposeful obfuscation. In this research, we first cover supervised approaches showing that current methods fail to learn a unique signature that describes the motion of a subject. Rather they extract frame-based feature information which is then aggregated. While these methods have shown to be effective, they do not …

Unusual Superconductivity In Topological Nodal Line Semimetal, Riffat Munir Jan 2021

Unusual Superconductivity In Topological Nodal Line Semimetal, Riffat Munir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Unconventional superconductivity differs from the conventional one by the pairing mechanism. In conventional or s wave superconductor electrons with opposite spin and momentum form cooper pair and superconductivity occurs as a result of electron phonon interaction. In the unconventional superconductor pairing mechanism is different than that of conventional one , for example p wave pairing where electrons with similar direction of spin forms the cooper pair. Unconventional superconductivity has been observed in systems such as heavy fermion, cuprates, iron based superconductors etc. In recent years topological superconductivity has gained attention due to the combination of topological states in the band sturucture …

The Use Of Physically Based Models And Ensemble Forecasting For Storm Surge Risk Assessment In A Changing Climate, Jeane Camelo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Storm surge has been the deadliest and costliest hurricane induced hazard in the coastal United States. In order to save property and lives, emergency managers must issue advisories guided by numerical models in a timely manner. However, these surge models are highly dependent on weather forecasts which contain uncertainties themselves as hurricanes traverse through the waters before making landfall. This dissertation aims to understand the contribution of uncertainties in hurricane properties, particularly the wind intensity which can contribute to uncertainties in storm surge models. Investigating these properties through numerical modeling is both computationally and time intensive. However by developing a …

Performance-Based Funding: A Case Study Of Three Universities In The State Of Florida, Lucretia Cooney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

An exploratory case study of three institutions of higher education in the State of Florida and performance-based funding was conducted. The study examined the metrics that determined funding over the years 2014-2020. The study was grounded in Neoliberal Theory and Resource Dependency Theory. Significant findings in this study included: (a) the decline in the percentage of bachelor graduates employed (employment was measured by $25,000 wages after graduation), or continuing their education across all three universities, (b) Student-to-Faculty Ratios (CDS) were a statistically significant predictor of Bachelor's Degrees Awarded (Key Performance Metric), F (1, 13) = 37.76, p < .001., (c) the increase of non-tenure earning over tenure-earning and tenured faculty at all three institutions during the fiscal years 2016-17 to 2020-21, and (d) fewer graduate degrees were awarded in the STEM disciplines over the time investigated. The study affirms the tenets of both Neoliberal Theory and Resource Dependency Theory. The study provided useful information for national performance-based funding programs, the Florida Board of Governors, the Boards of Trustees, and institutional stakeholders. Implications for practice include the need for more transparency and parity in reporting data across databases. Future research should conduct this same study including all of the institutions in the State of Florida.

Exploring Mesoscale Structures Using Chord Occultations Of Saturn's Rings, Lamia Benyamine

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The Cassini spacecraft orbited Saturn for over 13 years and collected stellar occultations using an Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS). Chord occultations were analyzed using autocorrelations at minimum ring plane radius to visualize the structure and correlation in the azimuthal direction. These particle tracking occultations cut a chord across the rings in the path of the star. By taking the autocorrelation of these chord occultations, 8 out of the 66 showed clumping within the first 3.0 km in azimuth, representing signs of a structure. Six of those occultations could be moonlets or propellers as their minimum ring plane radii are in …
