Florida Courts And The Disputed Election Of 1876, Jerrell H. Shofner
Florida Courts And The Disputed Election Of 1876, Jerrell H. Shofner
Florida Historical Quarterly
When the election of November 7, 1876 failed to resolve the presidential contest between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel J. Tilden because of uncertain results in Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina, both national parties sent prominent representatives to the three southern capitals to observe and work for their partys’ interests. With Tilden only one electoral vote short of victory, the Republicans needed every one of the nineteen disputed votes. Because there had been less violence and corruption in Florida and because only a few votes separated the parties, many politicians believed it to be the crucial state. Under …
Exploring Ch’Timi’S History, Structure, And Decline: A Field Study Chez Les Ch’Tis, Felix Balak
Exploring Ch’Timi’S History, Structure, And Decline: A Field Study Chez Les Ch’Tis, Felix Balak
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
This research investigated the history of the Ch’timi language and some of the differences between it and Standard French, as well as its decline and what, if anything, is being done to stop it. Ch’timi is a part of the Picard language group, spoken primarily in the north of France, and parts of Belgium. It is an endangered language, and few people still speak it to this day. This field research aims to determine how speakers of the language see it, whether they think it should be preserved, and whether anything is being done to keep it active. To answer …

The Effects Of Water Ice Sublimation On Slope Failures Of Icy Regolith, Christopher Cox, Madison Weinberg, Trisha Joseph
The Effects Of Water Ice Sublimation On Slope Failures Of Icy Regolith, Christopher Cox, Madison Weinberg, Trisha Joseph
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
The frost line in a planetary system represents the distance from the central star inside of which conditions are too warm for ice to form, while beyond this line it will be stable. When an icy object passes that line heading toward the Sun it will begin to sublimate and outgas, potentially causing mass loss and surface changes. One example is surface failures, which can lead to material being removed from the object. Evidence of this has been seen on cometary surfaces, where surfaces often show structures that appear to have suffered various mechanical failures like cracking and landslides. By …

Revisiting Attitudes Towards English In Cameroon And The Rush For Emi: Positioning Education For All Vision, Eric Enongene Ekembe
Revisiting Attitudes Towards English In Cameroon And The Rush For Emi: Positioning Education For All Vision, Eric Enongene Ekembe
Journal of English Learner Education
The rush to English and English medium education (EMI) is fashionably a global tendency, and research in the domain has extensively explored the effects of such rush on social justice, quality education, economic and power dynamics across contexts. Given the multifaceted challenges related to the provision of English and accessibility to EMI, the relationship between UNESCO’s Education For All vision and access to English tends to be complicated. This paper examines the commonly-stated quest for English in Cameroon with a focus on attitudes towards English and EMI. The purpose is to understand the interface between the rush to EMI and …
Multilingual And Multicultural Education: The Intersectionality Of Culture Mindset And Instructional Practices, Brendon Thiry, James P. Concannon
Multilingual And Multicultural Education: The Intersectionality Of Culture Mindset And Instructional Practices, Brendon Thiry, James P. Concannon
Journal of English Learner Education
The new mainstream classroom is both multilingual and multicultural. How prepared are teachers to work with English language learners and students with interrupted or informal education? This study aimed to determine if teacher growth mindset and cultural competency significantly predicted teacher’s use of responsive teaching practices with English language learners. Utilizing a multiple regression model, growth mindset and cultural competency did not predict teacher’s use of responsive teaching practices. However, by conducting an itemized analysis of the cultural competency survey, certain items stood out as potential predictors of responsive teaching practices. Results from this study suggest that the cultural competency …
A Functional Approach To Language Development For Dual Language Learners, Luciana C. De Oliveira, Ruslana Westerlund
A Functional Approach To Language Development For Dual Language Learners, Luciana C. De Oliveira, Ruslana Westerlund
Journal of English Learner Education
This article describes a functional approach to language development. This approach draws on functional linguistic perspectives to offer ways for teachers to identify language patterns to help dual language learners (DLLs) see how language works and engage them in exploring meaning in texts as they develop their linguistic repertories in more than one language. The authors contextualize the approach as part of the new WIDA Standards and present a case study to showcase how the functional approach can be used in dual language classrooms, with annotated science texts in English and Spanish.
Dual Language Effectiveness To Narrow Achievement Gaps: A Quantitative Correlational Study, Belinda Reyes Ed.D.
Dual Language Effectiveness To Narrow Achievement Gaps: A Quantitative Correlational Study, Belinda Reyes Ed.D.
Journal of English Learner Education
An increase in the English learner (EL) population is evident in public schools throughout the United States. Academic achievement gaps between ELs and non-EL peers persist from early childhood through the post-secondary level (Florida Department of Education, 2019c). The gap in the literature is the lack of studies analyzing the language acquisition of ELs enrolled in dual language programs to narrow the achievement gap of ELs. Transformative Learning Theory and the Dynamic Systems Theory are the foundation of the theoretical framework. Key research questions seek data on the relationship between standardized assessments measuring language acquisition and academic performance of third-grade …
13c Chemical Shift Concentration Dependence Of Phenol, Anisole, And Their Sulfur Analogs As A Probe Into Anomalous Reactivity In Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution Reactions, Braxton Lowers, Adam Reed
13c Chemical Shift Concentration Dependence Of Phenol, Anisole, And Their Sulfur Analogs As A Probe Into Anomalous Reactivity In Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution Reactions, Braxton Lowers, Adam Reed
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
The 13C chemical shift concentration dependence of phenol, anisole, thiophenol, and thioanisole in CDCl3 was acquired and analyzed over various concentration ranges and reported with the intention of observing the effect of hydrogen bonding on the electron density around aromatic nuclei. Of the para carbon chemical shift concentration dependences observed, phenol exhibited the most significant concentration dependence. Attempts were made to determine the functions describing concentration dependence of the 13C chemical shifts observed. Notably, CDCl3 was found to exhibit relatively nonlinear concentration dependence in the same range as the compounds observed, suggesting that trace impurity and …

Rembert Wallace Patrick, Herbert J. Doherty, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the Fall of 1940 a young South Carolinian with a brandnew doctor’s degree in history from the University of North Carolina appeared among the new faculty members at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Rembert Wallace Patrick had begun his long and warm association with Florida, its people, and its history. In the small, north Florida college town the youthful historian energetically devoted himself to his work and soon won the devoted following of students and the affection and respect of his colleagues. Though he was a practical, down-to-earth man, he quickly revealed a dry, often irreverent sense of …

The Exploration Of Florida And Sources On The Founding Of St. Augustine, Luis Rafael Arana
The Exploration Of Florida And Sources On The Founding Of St. Augustine, Luis Rafael Arana
Florida Historical Quarterly
Four hundred years ago, Europeans made the first permanent settlement within the present limits of the United States. These were Spaniards who under Pedro Menendez de Aviles established St. Augustine in 1565, upon land discovered fifty-two years earlier. In the interval between discovery and colonization, the coast of Florida had been gradually charted and portions of the interior explored. Though all attempts at planting the civilization of Spain in the new land failed until Menendez appeared on the scene, the discoveries of Juan Ponce de Leon, Alonso Alvarez de Pineda, Panfilo de Narvaez, and Hernando de Soto gradually outlined the …

State-Supported Higher Education Among Negroes In The State Of Florida, Leedell W. Neyland
State-Supported Higher Education Among Negroes In The State Of Florida, Leedell W. Neyland
Florida Historical Quarterly
State-supported higher education among Negroes in Florida had its beginning during the decade of the 1880’s. The initial step in this new educational venture was taken by Governor William D. Bloxham who, during his first administration, vigorously set forth a threefold economic and social program. In his inaugural address he declared that in order to promote the interest, welfare, and prosperity of the state, "we must invite a healthy immigration; develop our natural resources by securing proper transportation; and educate the rising generation." He promulgated this combination as "the three links in a grand chain of progress upon which we …
The Physics Of Nanoaperture Optical Traps: Design, Fabrication And Experimentation, Chenyi Zhang
The Physics Of Nanoaperture Optical Traps: Design, Fabrication And Experimentation, Chenyi Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Recent progress in nano optics, spurred by progress in nanofabrication, has allowed us to overcome these challenges. We use surface plasmon polaritons to break the optical diffraction limit and squeeze the photon energy into a local hot spot. The small mode volume of a plasmonic antenna or nanoaperature significantly enhances the local field and can be designed to resonate at a desired wavelength. By designing, fabricating, and testing these nanoapertures, I trap single nanoparticles with significantly reduced laser power by measuring the monochromatic transmission change of a resonant aperture. A freely diffused nanoparticle, behaving like a dipole antenna, interacts with …
Novel Optical Frequency Combs Injection Locking Architectures, Ricardo Bustos Ramirez
Novel Optical Frequency Combs Injection Locking Architectures, Ricardo Bustos Ramirez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Due to their highly stable timing characteristics, optical frequency combs have become instrumental in applications ranging from spectroscopy to ultra-wideband optical interconnects, high-speed signal processing, and exoplanet search. In the past few years, there has been a necessity for frequency combs to become more compact, robust to environmental disturbances, and extremely energy efficient, where photonic integration shows a clear pathway to bring optical frequency combs to satellites, airships, drones, cars, and even smartphones. Therefore, the development of chip-scale optical frequency combs has become a topic of high interest in the optics community. This dissertation reviews the work made in the …
Performance Enhancement Of Time Delay And Convolutional Neural Networks Employing Sparse Representation In The Transform Domains, Masoumeh Kalantari Khandani
Performance Enhancement Of Time Delay And Convolutional Neural Networks Employing Sparse Representation In The Transform Domains, Masoumeh Kalantari Khandani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Deep neural networks are quickly advancing and increasingly used in many applications; however, these networks are often extremely large and require computing and storage power beyond what is available in most embedded and sensor devices. For example, IoT (Internet of Things) devices lack powerful processors or graphical processing units (GPUs) that are commonly used in deep networks. Given the very large-scale deployment of such low power devices, it is desirable to design methods for efficient reduction of computational needs of neural networks. This can be done by reducing input data size or network sizes. Expectedly, such reduction comes at the …

Investigating Topologic And Geometric Properties Of Synthetic And Natural River Networks Under Changing Climate, Shiblu Sarker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
River networks are important landscape features that collect and transport water, sediment and nutrients from regions of higher elevation to lower elevations. These networks have been studied for several decades from a range of geomorphological and hydrological perspectives. Investigating the geometric and topological properties of river networks is important for developing predictive models describing the network dynamics under changing climate as well as for quantifying the physical processes operating upon them. Although these networks have been characterized for a wide range of geomorphic properties, topological properties, and in particular, spectral properties of river networks received limited attention. In this dissertation, …
Covid-19: Exploring The Probability Of Disease Extinction - A Modeling And Simulation Study, Donald Porchia
Covid-19: Exploring The Probability Of Disease Extinction - A Modeling And Simulation Study, Donald Porchia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
There are two distinct topics considered in this dissertation. The first is the formulation of a compartmental model using reactive social distancing in which disease transmission changes as a function of the state variables of the model; in this case, the cumulative incidence. The model assumes a single strain epidemic of Covid-19 in the United States and is used to estimate the cumulative number of deaths due to the epidemic where incidence data is used to calibrate and validate the model. The second topic concerns the use of the stochastic threshold to determine disease persistence or extinction. The Covid-19 pandemic …
Modeling The Relationship Between Perceptual And Stimulus Space In Category Learning, Clay Killingsworth
Modeling The Relationship Between Perceptual And Stimulus Space In Category Learning, Clay Killingsworth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Learning to categorize visual stimuli is a fundamental cognitive skill underlying both everyday functioning and professional competencies in domains such as radiology and airport security screening. Categories may be very simple or highly complex, with accurate categorization dependent on multiple interacting features. General recognition theory (GRT) models uniquely allow examination of feature dimension interactions, but basic questions remain about the applicability of such models and the 2x2 categorization tasks (four-alternative forced choice) employed in studies which use them. Findings in several studies that factorially combine 2 levels of 2 stimulus dimensions indicate a common pattern of perceptual advantage for the …
Robust And Scalable Data Representation And Analysis Leveraging Isometric Transformations And Sparsity, Alireza Zaeemzadeh
Robust And Scalable Data Representation And Analysis Leveraging Isometric Transformations And Sparsity, Alireza Zaeemzadeh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The main focus of this doctoral thesis is to study the problem of robust and scalable data representation and analysis. The success of any machine learning and signal processing framework relies on how the data is represented and analyzed. Thus, in this work, we focus on three closely related problems: (i) supervised representation learning, (ii) unsupervised representation learning, and (iii) fault tolerant data analysis. For the first task, we put forward new theoretical results on why a certain family of neural networks can become extremely deep and how we can improve this scalability property in a mathematically sound manner. We …

Jonathan C. Gibbs: Florida's Only Negro Cabinet Member, Joe M. Richardson
Florida Historical Quarterly
Historians have contended that during the period of Reconstruction when the Republican party dominated the political stage in Florida, the state was controlled by incompetent, illiterate, and venal Negroes. A critical examination of primary sources, however, shows that this is not a valid conception. Negro office holders were always in a decided minority and among those who held office on the state and local level there were many capable men. The best example of a Florida Negro who disproves the stereotyped freedman politician is Jonathan C. Gibbs, one of the best educated and most cultured persons holding a political office.

Map No. 7 at the end of Verne E. Chatelain’s The Defenses of Spanish Florida 1565-1763 is entitled Mapa de la Ysla de la Florida. It is of Spanish origin, but its printed legend admits the anonymity of the cartographer and the uncertainty of the date. Although Woodbury Lowery listed maps from the same repository, he was unaware of the existence of this one. It was Professor Louis C. Karpinski of the University of Michigan who discovered this paper representation of Florida in the war ministry in Madrid, while searching for American history materials in Spanish archives. In the fall of 1892 a thirteen-year-old boy requested and received a copy of Campbell’s Historical Sketches of Colonial Florida. Beginning with Panfilo de Narvaez’s discovery of Pensacola Bay, the 284-page book traced the explorations of Hernando de Soto, described the ill-fated attempt of Tristan de Luna to found a colony at Pensacola, and detailed the eventual permanent settlement there. The author emphasized the British Period of Colonial Florida, overweighted the importance of Pensacola, and ended his narrative with the American occupation of the province.

Five days subsequent to the great artillery duel of November 22-23 Bragg endeavored to transmit mail to the Confederate prisoners held by the Yankees. Brown refused to receive the letters and even disdained to state his reasons for so doing. He was by no means as courteous and amiable as he had been after the attack on his outside confrere, Colonel Wilson. Later in the day a small yawl attempted to enter the bay from the fleet, a privilege heretofore accorded to the Federals, as until November 22 the Rebels’ vessels had been allowed to tie up at the navy …
