The National Consortium on Health Science and Technology Education (NCHSTE) is comprised of representatives from the various segments of education, the health care industry, and several publishing companies. Representatives of these divergent constituencies are deeply concerned with education legislation that influences the preparation of future health care workers. Therefore, the organization supports the continuum of Technical Preparation as moved forward by the Carl Perkins legislation. Results are documented of a survey which attempted to identify existing Tech Prep programs’ level of participation, grade levels involved, measures of success, admission procedures, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) involvement, and student acceptance …

The Lsi And Mbti As Predictors Of Learning Style, Kathleen M. Kirby Ed.D., Patricia K. Leitsch Ph.D., Timothy L. Kennedy M.A.

Journal of Health Occupations Education

The benefits of incorporating learning style theories in the educational process are well-documented. The problem facing educators is the choice of assessment tools that provide useful and significant information. The purpose of this study was to compare Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory-1985 (LSI-85) and the Myers- Briggs Type Indicator-Form G (MBIT-G) to identify existence, strength and direction of correlations. Data were collected from 132 nursing and physical therapy students. Results show some correlations between the two instruments. However, the strength of the correlations is weak and not in predicted directions. Overall, the MBTI-G appears superior to the LSI-85 for assessing learning …

A Study Of Aids Policies As Reported By Practical Nursing Programs Of Indiana, David K. Miller Rnc, B.S.N., M.S. Ed, Karen E. Gable Ed.D.

Journal of Health Occupations Education

Many of the nation’s nursing schools have yet to develop AIDS policies. Without such policy implementation, nursing educators face many problems. A recent study of nursing programs in Nebraska revealed that none of the schools’ policies met all of the twenty-one criteria set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American College Health Association (ACHA). The purposes of this study were to determine how many of Indiana’s practical nursing programs have created or implemented AIDS policies and to compare and contrast those policies with the criteria set by Witmer (1992), the CDC, and the ACHA. Educational Effectiveness Function: An Algorithmic Methodology Uniting Instruments, Stakeholders, And Weighings Into Numerical Effectiveness Indices, Mary Edith Powell Ed.D., Mt (Ascp), James Noel Wilmoth Ph.D.

Journal of Health Occupations Education

This study is based on effectiveness data collected from beginning or new vocational education teachers. The report illustrates multiattribute utility technology applied to 31 indicator items first reported in a publication of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Nineteen of the 31 items were aggregated into a teaching effectiveness component and 12 into a component for school effectiveness. The teaching and school effectiveness components then were aggregated into 5 educational effectiveness functions based on as many different weighings (0, 10. 0.25, 0.50, 0.75. and 0.90) of the teaching effectiveness component. Properties of the resulting distributions were presented. Finally, a …

Avoiding Legal Action From Health Occupations Students, Elaine Mohn R.N., Ed.D. Jul 2015

Avoiding Legal Action From Health Occupations Students, Elaine Mohn R.N., Ed.D.

Journal of Health Occupations Education

Health occupations (HO) teachers increasingly are required to defend their decisions in court to fail students or dismiss students from programs. Legal precedents have established several steps that HO teachers must take to protect students’ rights to both procedural and substantive due process. To justify their decisions to fail or dismiss a student, HO teachers need to take specific steps as they develop course objectives and evaluate the performance of unsatisfactory students. HO teachers often experience emotional discord when they fail or dismiss students. However, the HO teacher is bound by professional ethics to ensure that patients receive adequate care. …

School Effectiveness Function: A Model Developed From Historical Reports Supplemented With Subjective Vocational Teacher Perceptions, Norma J. Walters Ph.D., R.N., James Noel Wilmoth Ph.D.

Journal of Health Occupations Education

A school effectiveness function based on considerations and mathematical analyses associated with Multiattribute Utility Technology was developed. The function served to unify single indicators of school effectiveness in a manner understandable to local community groups and school personnel and was capable of computation on hand held calculators with memories. The methodology has validlty and reliability, intuitive efficacy, and a capacity for objectivity in providing both an empirical algorithm and a better understanding of school effectiveness. Data were collected from 98 new educators recently employed in business and industry (the Stakeholders) on 12 published school effectiveness attributes. Weighings were calculated from …
