Growing up was a little hectic in my family’s household during the 1970s and 80s, but something I learned was that you can do more than one thing at a time and be good at all of them if you just apply yourself.

It’s August already and the summer is almost over. I can’t believe how time has flown. I’m not sure where June and July went. It feels like just last week that spring classes were ending and summer classes beginning.
School will be starting up again in a few short weeks. We’ll have a full cohort of students back on campus. The lines for coffee will be never ending and parking will be nowhere to be found. Life will definitely get more exciting.
Here are the suggestions from UCF Libraries faculty and staff to help you get back in the mindset …

Transportation is a complex, technology-intensive socio-technical system, which needs to be tackled in an integrated manner. Also, transportation as a sector is a significant component of any national economy, and has far-reaching implications both with regard to socio-economic and environmental well-being of the society and within the context of sustainability science. For this reason, sustainable transportation is not only an important field of research within the academia but also an indispensable constituent of a sustainable economy. Therefore, investigating the path to sustainable transportation requires a holistic approach, encompassing the three dimensions of sustainability, i.e. environment, society, and economy. There are …

It’s Pride Month! Time for shouting out the celebration of the LGBTQIA community (yes, there are more than lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender in the queer community). June was chosen to honor the Stonewall Riots which happened in 1969. Like other celebratory months, LGBT Pride Month started as a weeklong series of events and expanded into a full month of festivities.
In honor of Pride Month, UCF Library faculty and staff suggested books, movies and music from the UCF collection that represent a wide array of queer authors and characters. Additional events at UCF in June include “UCF Remembers…6.12.16” which …
Transportation Planning For Electric Vehicles And Associated Infrastructure, Florida Solar Energy Center, David L. Block
Transportation Planning For Electric Vehicles And Associated Infrastructure, Florida Solar Energy Center, David L. Block
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Planning is the key to successful adoption and deployment of any new technology, and it is particularly important when that advancement involves a paradigm shift such as electrified transportation. At its core, electric transportation is largely a technology deployment. The vehicles and supporting infrastructure are unique to this mode of transportation; requiring new and specific planning and policies to support their deployment. This EVTC project brings together these planning elements and their role in the future U.S. transportation network. The project results are presented in five planning related subject areas: (1) Identification of 14 of the 22 EVTC program topics …
Residential Performance Code Methodology For Crediting Dehumidification And Smart Vent Applications Final Report, Florida Solar Energy Center, Robin Vieira
Residential Performance Code Methodology For Crediting Dehumidification And Smart Vent Applications Final Report, Florida Solar Energy Center, Robin Vieira
FSEC Energy Research Center®
As energy efficiency reduces the hours where air conditioning is called for, and as codes require outdoor air to be brought into homes, humidity levels in homes may rise to the point where dehumidification is required. However, there are currently no standards in Florida's Energy Conservation Code for dehumidification. Thus, a mechanical contractor that invests in an expense such as variable speed heat pumps or heat pipe technology in order to dehumidify and save energy receives little benefit relative to another home that installs an inefficient dehumidifier. A reference home dehumidification strategy needs to be established.Another strategy to reduce interior …
Electric Vehicle Battery Durability And Reliability Under Electric Utility Grid Operations, Florida Solar Energy Center, Matthieu Dubarry
Electric Vehicle Battery Durability And Reliability Under Electric Utility Grid Operations, Florida Solar Energy Center, Matthieu Dubarry
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Battery degradation is extremely important to EV technologies and is a function of several factors, such as electrode chemistries, operating temperatures, and usage profiles (i.e. vehicle-only vs. vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications). The goal of this research was to assess such impact. Laboratory testing of commercial "18650" Li-ion cells was conducted in Hawaii Natural Energy Institute's Battery Testing Laboratory. The battery test plan used two separate experiments: a cycling experiment to assess the impact of both V2G and grid-to-vehicle (G2V) charging strategies and a calendar aging experiment to assess the impact of temperature and State of Charge (SOC). The results have shown …
Automated And Connected Vehicle Implications And Analysis, Florida Solar Energy Center, David L. Block
Automated And Connected Vehicle Implications And Analysis, Florida Solar Energy Center, David L. Block
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Automated and connected vehicles (ACV) and, in particular, autonomous vehicles have captured the interest of the public, industry and transportation authorities. ACVs can significantly reduce accidents, fuel consumption, pollution and the costs of congestion which in turn will offer a fundamental change to the future U.S. transportation network. The objective of this project was to evaluate ACV technologies, activities, laws and policies that are now in place or proposed and to assess future ACV usage. The assessment also evaluates the highest level of automated vehicles called autonomous or self-driving vehicles and includes how electric vehicles (EVs) will participate in the …

The M.A. program in Clinical Psychology was first offered at the UCF Sanford/Lake Mary Regional Campus in Fall, 2013. Recently I had an opportunity to speak with one of the program faculty members, Dr. Brian Fisak, co-author along with Kellie Kissell, Hayley Rodriguez and Lloyd Lucas of the recently published article “Examination of the Contribution of Ruminative Thinking and Maladaptive Self-Beliefs to Social Anxiety”.

I feel fortunate to have worked as an academic librarian in two similar, yet different countries. First I worked as a general librarian for the Department of Services at the University of Canberra, then as a contracted Science & Engineering Research Librarian at Macquarie University. I have a Master of Arts in Information and Knowledge Management from the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), which is equivalent to an ALA-accredited degree in Library and Information Science. Last December, I graduated with a Master of Arts in Library and Information Science from University of South Florida (USF). In my story, I have …

The increasing power of technology puts new, advanced statistical tools at the disposal of researchers. This is one of the first research articles to use a data mining tool—namely, decision trees—to analyze the behavior of inbound tourists for the purpose of effective future destination marketing in Japan. The research results of approximately 4,000 observations show that the main motivation for visitors' future return is not driven by experiences had during their most current visit but rather by experiences anticipated in the future, such as visiting hot springs or immersing themselves in beautiful natural settings. The data mining method largely excludes …

A research team from the Rosen College of Hospitality Management (RCHM) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) investigated the perception of happiness and satisfaction with life in Aruba. This investigation is the result of an assignment granted by the Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA). This study updates a similar study conducted by the UCF team in 2011. Similar to 2011, this study estimates the impact of tourism on residents’ happiness and satisfaction with life. Aruba is one of the first small island destinations in the world to employ a happiness index as one of its metrics to assess the impact …
