Tampa's Multi-Purposed Waterway: An Environmental History Of The Hillsborough River, 1950-1980, Brad Massey Jul 2022

Tampa's Multi-Purposed Waterway: An Environmental History Of The Hillsborough River, 1950-1980, Brad Massey

Florida Historical Quarterly

Hillsborough River State Park rangers Mike Evans and Brian Polk could not bear it anymore. For three weeks in February of 1981 they watched hundreds of dead fish float underneath the live oak-canopied Hillsborough River waters of their wilderness park, their bloated carcasses bobbing in the water and putrefying the air. Now, determined to find the cause of the slaughter, they boarded a canoe and paddled into Blackwater Creek, a Hillsborough River tributary. They did not make it far.

Camp Blanding In World War Ii: The Early Years, George E. Cressman, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

The history of Camp Blanding, a World War II training facility, has its origins in the Florida National Guard. Beginning in 1907, the Florida National Guard trained at Black Point on the St. Johns River, just southwest of Jacksonville. The War Department held an adjacent site where many ranges were located. Training involved some monthly drill periods, but focused primarily on summer encampments.

The Path To No-Fault: Florida Automobile Insurance To 1971, Karl Miller Jul 2022

The Path To No-Fault: Florida Automobile Insurance To 1971, Karl Miller

Florida Historical Quarterly

Within a short period at the start of the twentieth century, the automobile emerged in Florida, rapidly displacing other modes of transportation and dramatically transforming the state. The arrival of automobility, however, brought widespread bodily injury and property damage to Floridians. In order to help mitigate the economic cost of these accidents, automobile insurance arose. The interaction of the Florida government and the automobile insurance industry over several decades culminated in the passage of the Florida Automobile Reparations Reform Act of 1971, a landmark legislative act that comprehensively formalized Florida's handling of the automobile insurance industry. This article attempts to …

As The General Lay Dying: The Diary Of A Confederate Officer's Florida Odyssey, R. Boyd Murphree

Florida Historical Quarterly

The obituary for ninety-four-year-old Confederate veteran Charles Wood notes some episodes from his Civil War experience: captured at the Battle of Antietam, service in the defense of Charleston, South Carolina, and his presence at the surrender of General Joseph E.Johnston's army at Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1865. Missing is any mention of Wood's military service in Florida in 1861-1862. Whether the obituary writer was not aware of Wood's time in Florida or decided that period was not significant enough to include in the account of Wood's life is unknown. Like Wood's obituary, histories of the American Civil War have often …

Catching The Spirit: The Melrose Ladies Literary And Debating Society 1890-1899, Cynthia L. Patterson

Florida Historical Quarterly

At the January 19, 1894 public dedication of their newly-completed meeting hall, the members of the Melrose Ladies Literary and Debating Society listened attentively while the society president, Mrs. Eliza M. King, recited for a public audience including many of the town's leading citizens, the proud history of the society's first three years. Society secretary, Miss Nellie Glen, also read from a report she had presented previously (privately to club members in February 1893) that in "mid summer of 1890," members of the club, "having caught something of the spirit in this progressive age," met together to plan "some cooperative …

Hungry For Food And Community: A Study Of Visitors To Food And Wine Festivals, Mohammed Lefrid, Edwin N. Torres

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The present study explored the effects of various food and wine festival experience elements (e.g. authenticity, entertainment, and spending time with others) on visitors' sense of community, identification, and place attachment. The authors conducted survey research with 304 former visitors to food festivals. Data were analyzed using partial least square – structural equation modeling. Results revealed that food and wine festival experience elements (e.g. authenticity, entertainment, and spending time with friends and family) positively influenced visitors' sense of community, identification with the event, and attachment to the hosting destination. Significant findings relating to the mediating effect of sense of community …

Plant's Folly And Tampa's Treasure: Boosters And The Creation Of A Tampa Icon, Alena Pirok

Florida Historical Quarterly

After four years of construction and fanfare, the Tampa Bay Hotel opened its doors to northern tourists on February 11, 1891. Journalists on the scene reported that the hotel's builder, interior designer, owner, and all around mastermind, Henry B. Plant, had invited the people of Tampa, prospective hotel guests, and even rival businessmen to view his wondrous new resort.1 At its surface the building was a marvel to behold and quite a contrast to the collection of meager structures and rail lines that made up the "arid desert of sand" that was Tampa.2 Its fine red brick walls and wide …

Early Tourism And Harriet Beecher Stowe: The Discovery Of Stowe's First Published Descriptions Of Florida, John T. Foster, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

While many living today may not realize it, Harriet Beecher Stowe was the most famous American woman of the mid-nineteenth century. In fact, she was so famous that when she visited President Lincoln at the White House, he is believed to have greeted her with these words: "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war." This statement, of course, refers to the far-reaching impact of Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. For all its faults, this work exposed a horrible truth about slavery: that a slave owner possessed the right to maim or kill a …

African Americans In Florida, 1870-1920: A Historiographical Essay, David H. Jackson Jun 2022

African Americans In Florida, 1870-1920: A Historiographical Essay, David H. Jackson

Florida Historical Quarterly

The history of African Americans in Florida is a subject area that remains under-researched. While historians have generally done a commendable job examining the topic for the last fifty years or so, Florida still lags behind other southern states when it comes to scholarship on its African American populace. Thus, this essay seeks to review some of the scholarly works that have been published on the subject of African Americans in Florida from 1870 to 1920. It is arranged thematically with scholarship addressing major topics such as: Reconstruction, racial relations, racial violence, politics, religion, urban history, labor, black women, education, …

Cleaning Invisible Matter In Open-Kitchen Restaurants To Reduce The Impact Of Covid-19, Bendegul Okumus Jun 2022

Cleaning Invisible Matter In Open-Kitchen Restaurants To Reduce The Impact Of Covid-19, Bendegul Okumus

Rosen Research Review

Commercial cooking in indoor settings is known to produce particulate matter, a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets which can cause acute or chronic respiratory problems. Recent studies suggest that these invisible particles also make people more susceptible to adverse health effects of the COVID-19 virus. Dr. Bendegul Okumus was joined by a team and conducted an experimental scientific study in an open-kitchen chain restaurant to determine whether the levels of particulate matter (PM) pollution were potentially harmful for both kitchen staff and customers dining at the restaurant.
