Nitrogen Transformation In Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plants, Mark Lee Morris Jan 1975

Nitrogen Transformation In Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plants, Mark Lee Morris

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant and animal life; however, its presence in concentrations exceeding assimilative capacities of receiving water bodies is undesirable. Therefore, the form and concentration of total nitrogen released in wastewater effluents is of great concern. During the course of this study, the nitrogen analysis was performed on the various unit processes of the Florida Technological University wastewater treatment plant. The average percent removal of nitrogen between plant influent and clarifier effluent was 30.5% during the month of August 1975. It is believed that the nitrogen removal is attributed to luxury uptake by the biomass through …

An Application Of A Computerized Mathematical Model For Estimating The Quantity And Quality Of Nonpoint Sources Of Pollution From Small Urban And Nonurban Watersheds., Charles John Ingraham

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The problem of "Total Water Management" is reviewed; particular emphasis is given to the magnitude and intensity of pollution from nonpoint sources. The relationship between land usage in south Florida and subsequent effects upon receiving water bodies is discussed. Basic factors effecting hydrological and ecological subsystems are illustrated. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Urban Storm Water Runoff Mathematical Model, "STORM," is introduced. Model parameters and methodology are discussed. The mathematical relationships and modeling processes are reviewed and the model is exercised using a "new generation" southeast Florida community (The City of Palm Beach Gardens) as the subject of study. …

Lake County, Florida Solid Waste Management Plan, Lawrence J. Morey Jan 1975

Lake County, Florida Solid Waste Management Plan, Lawrence J. Morey

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The history of solid waste management in Lake County, Florida is reviewed. The role of governmental agencies is mentioned. Local environmental characteristics and transportation systems are discussed. Existing collection and disposal practices are presented. A land use analysis of the unincorporated areas of the County is given. Projections of population and solid waste quantities are listed. Two computer models are presented. Their optimum solutions are analyzed in detail. The cost associated with implementing either plan is presented. A recommended plan is given based on a combination of transfer stations and sanitary landfills.

Stormwater Runoff From Shopping Centers, Thomas P. Donigan Jan 1975

Stormwater Runoff From Shopping Centers, Thomas P. Donigan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This is a brief investigation of stormwater runoff from a large shopping center located in Brevard County, Florida. Merritt Square Shopping Center has a parking area for 4,700 automobiles and is located on the shore of Newfound Harbor which is classified as recreation waters (Class III). A literature survey of runoff studies in other areas has been made for both "state of the art" and evaluation of findings. Water samples were initially collected from five locations. Review of the analysis of these samples indicated that while color and turbidity appeared to decrease linearly with time, organic and inorganic concentrations did …

Mixing Effects On Shallow Water Bodies, Kim Robin Powell Jan 1975

Mixing Effects On Shallow Water Bodies, Kim Robin Powell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report is intended to examine the ecological changes due to mixing in shallow water bodies. Physical, chemical, and biological changes are reported in literature. A literature search revealed the range of mixing nodes or processes. Assessment of ecological changes due to mixing by boating activities had been evaluated in a research project supported by the environmental Protection Agency and conducted at Florida Technological University. The examination of changes due to mechanical mixing on lake ecology simulated in fifty-five gallon drums indicated the sensitivity of such parameters as total Kjeldahl nitrogen, conductivity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. Problems of reproducibility …
