Jewish Women's Reproductive Health Traditions From The Perspective Of Midwives In The United States, Haley Juroviesky
Jewish Women's Reproductive Health Traditions From The Perspective Of Midwives In The United States, Haley Juroviesky
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This research study examines Jewish women’s traditions from the perspective of midwives, in the United States (US), particularly midwives in Florida and New York, based on their work caring for women of childbearing age in the Hasidic Ashkenazi and Sephardic Orthodox communities. The reproductive traditions examined in this research may be practiced differently depending on a woman’s degree of religiosity and the rabbinic authorities in their communities. The primary data I collected in this study are based on ethnographic methods, including participant-observation with midwives, and semi-structured interviews with midwives and rebbetzins. The secondary data draws on my analysis of the …

Prevalence And Perceived Efficacy In The Treatment Of Rheumatoid And Psoriatic Arthritis With Curcumin And Cannabinoids, Neha Bhanusali, Richa Purohit
Research Data and Datasets
Introduction
Rheumatoid (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) are autoimmune conditions that progressively destroy joints, causing chronic, often debilitating pain and drastically affecting the quality of life. Though cannabis has been legalized for medical use in most states in the United States (US), the safety and efficacy of its use in inflammatory arthritis have still not been satisfactorily established. It is also suggested that curcumin possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties.
Methods
This study utilized an observational, cross-sectional design to survey patients with RA and PsA presenting to a rheumatology clinic to establish the prevalence and perceived efficacy of curcumin and cannabinoids in …

Visual Imagery Subcategories And Their Neural Associations, Miguel Ibarguren
Undergraduate Scholarship and Creative Works
This literature review compiles research findings related to the brain areas associated with various visual imagery subcategories and explores their contributions to them. Through a search procedure, four research projects were used to identify ten distinct brain areas that demonstrated greater involvement in visual imagery. The visual imagery subcategories discussed in these research projects, and investigated in this review, include scene construction, episodic memory, imagery vividness, and visuospatial imagery. Scene construction was found to utilize the parahippocampal gyrus, hippocampus, retrosplenial cortex, and posterior parietal cortex. Episodic memory involves the same areas as scene construction, but also includes the precuneus and …
Football Obsession, Richard C. Crepeau
Football Obsession, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
While watching more and more college football in the last few days as the season comes to its close, I have been struck by what seems to be an increase in the frequency and intensity of the hits received by the players. Some players are knocked out and have concussions; some sustain fractures, while others experience lesser trauma across the body. As the speed and size of football players has increased over the past three decades, the collisions on the football field have become more violent.

Nemours Childrens Health is one of the nation’s largest pediatric hospital systems. Their goal is to enrich children‘s lives and get them effective treatment. The Child Life department is one of Nemours’ many volunteer departments, and it specifically focuses on helping child patients heal through play, education, and expression. I‘ve had the pleasure of serving the hospital as a volunteer within the Child Life Department. The volunteers in this department work as bodies to help alleviate the stress that comes with being in the hospital environment that the patients and their families are feeling. This department of the hospital plays …

have taken the last semester with Second Harvest Food Bank to participate in Donation Sorting for over 25 hours of volunteering, which gave back food to the Central Florida area. Second Harvest Food Bank’s purpose is to meet the basic need of food that impoverished and malnourished people cannot meet themselves. This poster will display how I used this activity to work on my leadership skills, show what I had to do to become a better leader and how I used this activity to help my community. I will also be discussing important traits that I have developed from working …

The purpose of my project is to explain my point-of-view of how 4310 Service-Learning: Marine Conservation & Restoration has changed my outlook of this career field and how its influenced me to want to continue in this major. I discuss how three amazing women teach me about oysters (Katherine Harris, Tara Blanchard, and Kelsey Mack) and how they found their voice in a male heavy career field. I also touch on the opportunities I took like mangrove gardening, trail camera footage of Cape Canaveral, and a beach clean-up, just to name a few and how the community plays a huge …
Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) As A Predictor Of Adulthood Anxiety States, Emma N. Martin
Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) As A Predictor Of Adulthood Anxiety States, Emma N. Martin
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are instances of childhood trauma such as caregiver negligence, domestic abuse, and other dysfunctional relationships that a child may encounter inside or outside of their family. Significant evidence suggests ACEs are a predictor of youth complications, such as attentional, learning, emotional, and behavioral deficits. Anxiety and depressive disorders are two of the most costly childhood health conditions. The more instances of ACE indicated, the “higher [the] odds of anxiety or depression,” with an increased likelihood of internalized comorbidities or engagement with self-sabotaging behaviors (Elmore et al., 2020). This study addresses potential precursors to adulthood anxiety using …

The Importance Of Mental Health Amongst The Lgbtq+ Community, Adrian Perotin
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
When it comes to the LGBTQ+ community, it has become known with more studies and research that many in the community have suffered through traumatic experiences regarding sexual assault and/or violence. This has caused a big impact on the mental health of the victims, but because there is not enough resources to the LGBTQ+ community that are open to them, those victims have a hard time recovering or feeling seen. Amongst the community are of course the youth coming in from the next generations that may unfortunately deal with these issues in safety and mental health, so they deserve to …

Housing Inequality And Community Engagement, Gabrielle E. Quinones
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
This project analyzes the best ways to address housing inequality through the lens of community engagement. I volunteered at a non-profit to get 25 hours of community service learning that focuses on preventing and reducing homelessness. I volunteered in order to understand how community engagement can help in the fight against housing inequality. This experience helped me understand how community engagement can help reduce and prevent homelessness through supporting the homeless community with low prices for clothing and free healthy food which in the long term, reduces housing inequality. Furthermore, it helped me understand how even little actions can have …

The purpose of our project was to assist and foster connections with students and faculty at Unlocking Children's Potential (UCP) Charter Schools. The main focus of our group's service was to assist with day to day classroom activities at UCP. Our goal was to provide a helping hand and watchful eye for the faculty teaching students at UCP. Fostering connections with students at UCP was also an important goal for our service. Each of us individually served in different places at UCP, but every member of the group had extensive contact with at least 13 students in a classroom setting, …
Supercharging Learning With Schoolhouse, Jackson Huff
Supercharging Learning With Schoolhouse, Jackson Huff
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
When the COVID-19 virus struck the world in early 2020, it immediately disrupted education. Classes which occurred in-person now had to transition to an online regimen. Unfortunately, for students, this change resulted in significantly lessened academic performance as well as increased rates of mental health disorders.
Observing this drastic change, Salman Khan, founder of Khan Academy, a website which hosts free educational video series, founded a new project called Schoolhouse to help alleviate students' struggles during the change to online education. Schoolhouse would provide free online tutoring in STEM subjects to anyone who desired it. Today, Schoolhouse hosts hundreds of …

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
Working with OCA taught us how to work and help, people with special needs, more specifically children. Throughout our volunteering we helped kids at OCA with their arts and crafts, made sure they had their needs met and worked on building the skills when they were taught during their group sessions. We learned how to redirect their behaviors to something more positive, and we learned how to better communicate with kids who are nonverbal to make sure their needs are met.
Providing Access To Healthcare For The Uninsured Via Shepherd's Hope, Azeem Hakim
Providing Access To Healthcare For The Uninsured Via Shepherd's Hope, Azeem Hakim
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
According to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2021, the population of uninsured individuals from the ages of zero to sixty-four in Orange County had a slight upward trend when compared to the two prior years, with roughly 182,054 uninsured patients living within Orange County in 2021. If so many of Orlando’s citizens in Orange County don’t have health insurance, and thus, are barred from being able to access quality healthcare, how could sustaining the vibrancy of our local community be possible, especially when many of these uninsured patients help keep the Orlando area functioning day to day? This is where …

For our project we worked with a group called brain wellness in Oviedo. Their purpose is to provide fun brain enriching activities to older individuals suffering from dementia. We assisted in activities such as word matching games, rearranging popsicle sticks in order to make certain patterns that were displayed on a screen, and even card games like go fish. Some key things that we learned was how to address some issues that surround dementia such as trying to convince someone that they shouldn’t be driving at their age and not make that person feel upset. We also learned some more …

Combating Invasive Species Through The Removal Of Pollution, Sarah J. Howell
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
The purpose of my project is to bring awareness to the issues of pollution on campus as well as encourage others to be more involved on campus through volunteerism. My time with the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) and the Arboretum was very valuable. Not only was I able to learn how to identify/properly remove invasive species from an environment as well as how to generally help maintain the gardens at UCF but I was also able to learn about the value of community and working towards a common goal such as cleaning up Greek road. A Key activity that …

Combatting Social Isolation In Greater Orlando, Rishi Nair, Nicholas Mistry
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
The state of Florida is home to one of the largest retiree and Veteran populations in the country. As people age, they are more prone to suffer from physical and mental conditions that preclude their ability to live a fulfilling life. This could result in social isolation and loneliness, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We partnered with Seniors First’s Project Connect program to improve social interactions among the elder community with virtual trivia events. These weekly games helped us identify areas of emotional need, such as improving self-esteem, introducing memories of seniors' lives when they were younger, …

My presentation centers on my E-Portfolio, seamlessly incorporating three key milestones from the Knights of Distinction program into significant events. Beginning with a brief personal introduction, I shared why I became a physics major, and explored the roots of my passion for space. Utilizing a visual aid, my poster board, I elucidated each focus area and its relevance to my aspirations and societal contributions. The first focus area was Citizenship and how I attended an “Industry BBQ” with the hopes of gaining valuable information to share it with other engineers. The second focus area was about leadership and my role …

Graft Versus Host Disease affects less than 20,000 cases per year and our project aims to give those who experience this terrible disease a better outcome and more manageable pain. The clinical trial that this data is collected from analyzes low-dose prednisone versus the standard dose and how that affects both morbidity and progression of the disease to Stage III-IV. This clinical trial has many clinical implications as it shows that reducing the dosage of commonly used treatment methods can sometimes have positive effects even though it is the standard to use a certain dose. This clinical trial found that …

This project focused on creating viable drosophila models that could be used to evaluate and understand the significance of the N-tarp portion in the effector genes of Chlamydia Trachomatis. During our project we performed multiple DNA clean ups, PCR's, gel electrophoresis, double digestions, and DNA ligations. In this we learned not only the methodological importance within these laboratory techniques but that a great deal of learning occurs in being able to evaluate and analyze ways to troubleshoot when intended results from an experiment are not observed.

This is a presentation that was presented (virtually) at the Florida Association of College and Research Libraries (FACRL) annual conference in October 2023.
The session outlined the process, from planning to execution, for creating collaborative student engagement activities between two unlikely partners in an academic library. In recent years, the University of Central Florida Libraries has hosted several joint activities between the Student Learning & Engagement and the Special Collections & University Archives departments. These events combined active learning and engagement strategies with self-guided learning. While Student Learning & Engagement staff routinely create and host these types of engagement activities, …

Integrated Healthcare In The U.S. Safety-Net System: Meeting The Needs Of Patients Through Comprehensive Medical And Social Care, Jacqueline Devaney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis examines how a Patient-Centered Medical Home addresses, implements, and provides medical and social resources and services within the Florida U.S. safety-net system, and how patients and providers perceive health care interactions between each other. The safety-net clinics seek to fill the care gap for millions of uninsured low-income U.S. residents who cannot afford private insurance, are unemployed, self-employed, undocumented, or their low income exceeds the qualification threshold, and they face barriers in accessing expensive medical care in the U.S. I have conducted ethnographic research at Grace Medical Home, a safety-net clinic in Central Florida, which included five months …
