The Effects Of Trace Organic Carbon On Aluminum Solubility, Fernand J. Tiblier Jan 1986

The Effects Of Trace Organic Carbon On Aluminum Solubility, Fernand J. Tiblier

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Alum jar tests were performed on raw portable waters of varying TOC. Parameters monitored include alum dose, pH and mixing conditions. Finished waters were analyzed for residual aluminum, residual TOC and hardness in order to investigate the effects of TOC on aluminum residual as would be encountered by alum coagulation and lime softening process in practice.

Three-dimensional graphs of residual aluminum, residual TOC and pH were constructed to illustrate the relationship among these measured parameters for the different sources. Statistical analyses were conducted to verify aluminum-organic complexation at reduced alum dosages for varying TOCs; initial TOC, reaction pH and dose …

The Hydrology And Solids Removal Efficiency Of A Detention Pond With Groundwater Inflow, Cameron A. Boss Jan 1986

The Hydrology And Solids Removal Efficiency Of A Detention Pond With Groundwater Inflow, Cameron A. Boss

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Most recently, research on stormwater detention ponds has focused on designs and operations that will improve the water quality of the discharge. Historically stormwater detention ponds were used to reduce the rate of runoff from the watershed area of using temporary storage to attenuate flow rates.

The study site was located near Orlando, Florida, and consisted of a detention pond, namely Lake Angel, which received stormwater runoff from a 131-acre area. Hydrologic data such as precipitation, runoff, and pond outflow were measured at the site. Total and suspended solids data for the pond outflow and stormwater runoff also were collected …

Attitude Similarity, Expertness And Perceived Counselor Trustworthiness, Sharon Lee Mckay Jan 1986

Attitude Similarity, Expertness And Perceived Counselor Trustworthiness, Sharon Lee Mckay

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This analogue study investigated the relationship between the "therapeugenic" (Bloom & Trautt, 1978) factors of attitude similarity and expertness on perceived trustworthiness of a confederate counselor. Several investigators have demonstrated that attitude similarity is positively related to perceived attractiveness, likeability and competence of counselors (Good, 1975; Griffitt & Byrne, 1970; Trautt, Finer & Calisher, 1980). There has been mixed support, however, for the notion that counselors who are perceived as "expert" will positively impact the counseling relationship (Brischetto & Merluzzi, 1981; Kunin & Rodin, 1982; Strong & Schmidt, 1970). The present study expanded previous research by jointly manipulating attitude similarity …

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Surveys of women in higher education administrative positions that identified factors which may contribute to career development have been conducted. However, the literature revealed little information regarding the importance placed on those factors by women in higher education administrative positions. The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of selected contributors to career development of women in higher education administration. Data were gathered by a mailed questionnaire to a sample of women administrators employed in Florida state supported community colleges and universities. The 343 useable returned questionnaires represented a 65.5% response rate and 51.3% of the total population. …

The Assessment And Treatment Of The Premenstrual Syndrome Client, Alison W. Kolodinsky Jan 1986

The Assessment And Treatment Of The Premenstrual Syndrome Client, Alison W. Kolodinsky

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Over 21 million American women suffer from the chronic, cyclic psychoneuroendocrinological dysfunction known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) (Greenfield & Wolf, 1983). At least five million of these women suffer from symptoms so debilitating that their personal and/or professional lives are disrupted (Labrum, 1983). Women who suffer from PMS often seek counseling because of the syndrome's behavioral, affective, and emotional components. Mental health professionals must be prepared to aid both the client and her gynecologist in the diagnosis and treatment of PMS. This research report includes (1) a synopsis of the medical literature including some of the theories of etiology and …

Florida Macrolichens As Potential Bioindicators Of Environmental Quality: A Baseline Study, Harry V. Neal Jan 1986

Florida Macrolichens As Potential Bioindicators Of Environmental Quality: A Baseline Study, Harry V. Neal

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Lichens have been used extensively and with considerable success as bioindicators of atmospheric pollution in North America and Europe for more than thirty years. Little research has followed in tropical and subtropical regions where population growth is rapid and environmental pressures unprecedented. However, taxa used as bioindicators in other studies and/or taxa having this potential, occur naturally in Central Florida. A new potential major source of pollution, the coal-fired Curtis H. Stanton Energy Center, is about to begin operation providing the opportunity to determine the extent of impact. Therefore, lichen monitoring sites have been established and the collection of baseline …

Stress, Exercise, Job Satisfaction And Performance: An Interactive Process Model, Monica Samanic Jan 1986

Stress, Exercise, Job Satisfaction And Performance: An Interactive Process Model, Monica Samanic

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Stress in organizations is a critical phenomenon of our times. Research to date has focused on specific job-related stressors such as role conflict, ambiguity and supervisory relationships utilizing satisfaction and performance as outcome variables. Results have often been ambiguous and non-conclusive. However, a variety of common physiological responses have been found to play a major role in stress reaction and management. Furthermore, numerous studies have demonstrated a moderating effect of exercise on physiological stress responses. This correlational study, based on a hypothetical Interactive Process Model of Stress Correlates, where fitness is the measure of stress, proposed to link stress-related variables …

Distribution Of Lead And Zinc In Groundwater Around An Exfiltration Pipe Including A Study Of Specific Conductance, Donna M. Schiffer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Highway runoff is a significant source of nonpoint pollution to surfoce and ground waters. Underground disposal of stormwater has several advantages, such as recharge of ground water resources and reduction of flow rates at existing storm sewer outfa11s. However, there are few studies on the effects of underground disposal of stormwater on the qua1ity of ground water. The purpose of this stucty was to examine the changes 1n lead, zinc, and specific conductance in highway runoff that is routed to an underground disposal facility as the water passes through the unsaturated soil to the surficia1 aquifer. An exfiltration pipe in …

Corporate Burnout And Its Nonwork-Related Correlates, Kimberly J. Redmond Jan 1986
