Anton Alaminos, Juan Ponce De Leon And A 1513-1514 European Discovery Of Mexico, Sam Turner
Florida Historical Quarterly
On October 12, 1519, during the early days of the Spanish conquest of what is today Mexico, an irate Diego Velazquez, Governor of Cuba, wrote to the young Charles V of Spain from the port of Santiago de Cuba. In his letter he complained that a vessel had arrived August 23rd of that year, secretly and illegally from Mexico, with a substantial cargo of gold and jewels. The vessel carried Captain Francisco de Montejo, who would one day be the Governor of Yucatan and Honduras, and Captain Alonso Hernandez Puerto Carrero. The vessel sailed under the expert guidance of the …

An Exiled Carolina Loyalist In British East Florida And The Bahama Islands, John Hairr
An Exiled Carolina Loyalist In British East Florida And The Bahama Islands, John Hairr
Florida Historical Quarterly
Colonel David Fanning was without question the most successful commander of Loyalist forces in the Carolinas during the Revolutionary War. Fanning never lost a battle in which he commanded and gained renown for being instrumental in the capture of Whig North Carolina Governor Thomas Burke. Fanning left the Carolinas when Charles Town, South Carolina, was evacuated, settling with his wife in British East Florida until they were forced to abandon their new home along with the rest of the British refugees when the province was returned to the Spanish government in the Treaty of Paris in 1783. After trying to …

Amnesia, Anamnesis, And Myth-Making In Florida: A Case Study Of Chipco, Eric Hannel
Amnesia, Anamnesis, And Myth-Making In Florida: A Case Study Of Chipco, Eric Hannel
Florida Historical Quarterly
History often finds ways of retaining information deemed "valuable," while discarding information no longer of interest or importance to its scrivener. During this process, those who recount history intentionally or unintentionally forget some details while retaining others, perhaps even embellishing them for later generations. At the nexus of this amnesia and purposeful anamnesis (the way history is remembered), rests American mythmaking. Each layer of mythmaking connects with place or geography representing forgotten as well as recollected details, a reclamation of past events and altered memories that aggrandize, justify, and construct out of messy, complex, and often brutal reality, a sanitized …

Volusia And Vibilia: Companion Plantations On The St. Johns River In Spanish And Territorial East Florida, Lani Friend
Volusia And Vibilia: Companion Plantations On The St. Johns River In Spanish And Territorial East Florida, Lani Friend
Florida Historical Quarterly
The names Volusia and Vibilia are mellifluous, "soft and pleasing to the ear." These are words used by Horatio Dexter to describe the Seminole language, but they are well suited to the names of these Spanish land grant plantations on the St.Johns River. Volusia and Vibilia seem to belong together because they do-they share a semantic affinity; they originate from a common cultural source; they were likely bestowed by the same person/s; and the lands bearing the names are closely linked in their history and development. Volusia and Vibilia were companion plantations in Spanish and Territorial East Florida.

All Disquiet On The Home Front: World War I And Florida, 1914-1920, Gary R. Mormino
Florida Historical Quarterly
On the eve of the First World War, the United States viewed events in Europe through a filter of isolationism and neutrality. Two vast oceans had reinforced an inclination toward internal affairs and paranoia, while engendering suspicion of diplomatic alliances and foreign revolutions. But events in faraway places-Sarajevo, St. Petersburg, and the Somme-made isolation impossible and neutrality improbable.

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
At a time when regulation impacting colleges and universities has steadily increased, institutional leaders have explored ways to maximize their educational effectiveness, impact, and public contribution to their surrounding communities. Public colleges and universities often use public-private partnerships to develop institutionally owned or managed spaces on and surrounding their campuses. As a result, institutional stakeholders are infused with existing community neighborhoods, cultures and structures, which often results in permanent change imposed on these neighbors and neighborhoods. Using a comparative case study approach, this exploratory research explored the relationship between campus stakeholders utilizing campus and private recreational spaces and their sense …

Modeling Health Insurance Premium Using Bayesian Hierarchical Models, Bennedict Kongyir, Emil Agbemade
Data Science and Data Mining
Insurance pricing requires pragmatism and creativity due to the unpredictable nature of risk [3]. This paper explores Bayesian hierarchical models to model health insurance premiums using individual and group predictors like demographics, health status, and geography. Data from Kaggle on health insurance policyholders was utilized, with prior distributions enhancing model interpretability and credibility. Bayesian models improve predictive accuracy and provide valuable insights for actuaries and policymakers, highlighting the signifcant impact of factors such as age and BMI on premium pricing.

Acquiring, Appraising, And Applying Evidence To Facilitate Evidence-Based Medical Education, Meredith Ratliff
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
This study explored evidence-based education in health professions education through three interrelated manuscripts. First, a scoping review of evidence-based medical education examined the use of the term “evidence-based” in the literature and the presence of evidence-based practices. The review analyzed numerous studies to understand how evidence-based education is defined and applied within the medical education community, highlighting key trends, gaps, and inconsistencies in the application of evidence-based principles. Next, a study employed an agile evidence-based instructional design (AVIDesign) model to create an evidence-based course in palliative care for medical students. This model integrated iterative development processes with evidence-based educational strategies, …

The Influence Of Natural And Anthropogenic Drivers On Estuarine Food Webs At Various Spatio-Temporal Scales And Levels Of Complexity, Michelle Shaffer
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Global coastal ecosystems support human life by providing critical services like food, water purification, and coastal protection, yet these ecosystems are among the most threatened due to natural and human-driven disturbances. The long-term maintenance and restoration of these ecosystems is a complex challenge for resource managers due to the wide range of factors affecting these ecosystems ecological condition over long timespans. Most studies in marine ecology evaluate ecosystem change over relatively short temporal scales (ago), often resulting in shifting baseline syndrome. To effectively manage and restore these ecosystems, resource managers must consider long-term ecosystem baselines.

Past And Present Communities Of Pottery Practice In Guatemala, Karla J. Cardona
Past And Present Communities Of Pottery Practice In Guatemala, Karla J. Cardona
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This research aims to identify pottery technological traits and attributes that suggest the presence of communities of pottery practice in archaeological contexts. Through the combination of ethnoarchaeological approach and archaeological ceramic analysis of vessels produced in present communities, we can identify communities of pottery practice in the past. The data obtained using diverse ethnographic methods and multiple archaeological analyses are relevant to archaeologists, as they allow the study of the organization of production in the absence of manufacturing contexts within the archaeological record. At the same time, as contemporary pottery-making practice is becoming scarcer in Guatemala it is relevant to …
Public Influence On Small Wars: Somalia And A Theory Of Constituent Discontent, Barry Smith
Public Influence On Small Wars: Somalia And A Theory Of Constituent Discontent, Barry Smith
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Public opinion predicts American small war sustainment through institutional causal mechanisms of Congress and political-military relations. An increase in general public disapproval (not necessarily connected to a war) predicts the time when Members of Congress look to their constituents for policy changes to appease broad frustration. Constituent discontent toward a U.S. small war is absorbed by individual legislators, translated into legislative constraint, and projected onto the Department of Defense that is highly attentive to Congress. America abandons war aims, despite its military advantage over adversaries, when the ways and means available for military operations are constrained by a threat or …

The Nebulous Binaries Of C.S. Lewis' Till We Have Faces, Amantia Menalla
The Nebulous Binaries Of C.S. Lewis' Till We Have Faces, Amantia Menalla
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Much of C.S. Lewis’ novel Till We Have Faces can be examined through one of two binaries. The tension between rationality, or reason, and spirituality, or religion, is one of the core facets of both the text and its main character, Orual. Orual feels the pull of both ideas and thus spends most of the novel in a nebulous space between them. This tension is further complicated by the space between the feminine and the masculine which she also inhabits. By covering her face and body, Orual de-emphasizes her feminine identity and takes on a masculine role, dressing as a …
The New Antisemitism, Edgar G. Soto
The New Antisemitism, Edgar G. Soto
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Following the Second World War, antisemitism appeared to be on a decline. Presently, however, there is an uptick in antisemitic hate crimes, worldwide. Modern-day Islamic antisemitism in particular is in large part recycled European Christian antisemitism adapted for Islamic audiences and intensified by the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict. This iteration of anti-Jewish bigotry is not the same as the “old,” but neither is it different. As will be explained, antisemitism has, throughout history, amounted to an anomaly in Islamic culture and in what may be called “normative” Islam.
Indeed, Muslims and Jews lived together amicably for centuries. In fact, within dar-al-Islam, …
Sweetening The Deal: Enhancing Flower Production And Quality For Native Pollinators In Urban Landscapes, Yaelle Esther Reeve
Sweetening The Deal: Enhancing Flower Production And Quality For Native Pollinators In Urban Landscapes, Yaelle Esther Reeve
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Urban landscapes can support pollinator conservation, but traditional landscape designs lack the diverse mixtures of native plants needed to support native pollinators. Although native plants support pollinators and can survive with less water and fertilizer than non-native landscape plants, they do not always grow well under modified urban soil conditions and irrigation regimes. A better understanding of the factors influencing flower production and the quality of native plants is needed if we are to design landscapes that support pollinator conservation. This study focused on how flower production and quality in different native plants responded to compost and irrigation treatments. The …

Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study explores the influence of bilingualism on personality traits specifically in English and Spanish-bilingual individuals. This examines how linguistic and cultural contexts have an impact on direct personality traits—extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, negative emotionality, and openness. Using a sample of 91 participants, paired samples t-tests were conducted to evaluate differences in personality trait scores between languages and calculated effect sizes to understand the practical significance of these differences. The results demonstrated no statistically significant differences in personality traits across the two languages. Furthermore, effect sizes were small, suggesting that any observed differences were not practically meaningful. While these findings do …
