The ongoing political and military turmoil in Myanmar has resulted in a significant increase in the migration of Burmese individuals to the United States in recent years. This demographic shift has brought attention to the health challenges faced by Burmese immigrants, particularly with regard to heart disease (heart attack). The complexities of the U.S. healthcare system, compounded by legal and social barriers, place immigrants at greater risk for health disparities. This study examines the health challenges of Burmese immigrants in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a specific focus on their perceptions and experiences related to heart disease, as explored through illness narratives. …
Shock Tube Droplet Breakup Experiments Facilitated By Acoustic Levitation, Anthony J. Aguilera
Shock Tube Droplet Breakup Experiments Facilitated By Acoustic Levitation, Anthony J. Aguilera
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Droplet introduction methodology in a shock tube differs based on the experimental conditions. For experiments in which the objective is to image droplet breakup, acoustic levitation allows for a consistent droplet shape and for diagnostic equipment to be aligned to a droplet prior to an experiment. A levitator was designed and used in the University of Central Florida’s shock tube facility. Polystyrene doped droplets were levitated to increase the likelihood of cavitation occurring. Multiple droplets were impacted by a shock wave, and the breakup regime was captured using a high-speed camera.

Addressing Vulnerabilities And Defesne Mechanisms In Transformer-Based Language Models, Mansour Al Ghanim
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Transformer-based Large Language Models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable success across Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, yet their increasing adoption has exposed critical vulnerabilities across input, model, and output layers. This dissertation systematically investigates these vulnerabilities and develops corresponding defenses, offering an end-to-end view of LLM security. First, we study model-level vulnerabilities through backdoor injection attacks that implant hidden malicious behaviors via hardware perturbations. We propose TrojBits, a hardware-aware attack that uses minimal bit-flips to insert trojans into models. Its three-stage design—Vulnerable Parameter Ranking, Hardware-Aware Attack Optimization, and Vulnerable Bit Pruning—success- fully compromises BERT and XLNet using only 64 parameters and …

Numerous studies in the literature have explored the decarbonization of aviation. Some opt for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), while others propose Hydrogen(H2). Recent studies have also investigated Ammonia (NH3) as a potential hydrogen fuel carrier. This study of NH3 as a viable alternative fuel could help reduce overall emissions and overcome the challenges of H2, which is highly flammable and difficult to store. This study aims to develop a core-engine model in a system simulation software called Simcenter Amesim. Results show a reasonable similarity between jet-A fuel and NH3 cracked H2 within …
Large Language Models And Networks: Edge Proposal, Synthetic Corpora, And Adaptive Node Generation, Nathan Gonzalez
Large Language Models And Networks: Edge Proposal, Synthetic Corpora, And Adaptive Node Generation, Nathan Gonzalez
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have evolved from brittle rule-based engines through data-driven statistical models to today’s transformer architectures whose multi-head attention enables rich contextual reasoning. Against this backdrop, this dissertation unifies three complementary investigations that deepen our understanding of how large language models (LLMs) can reason over, generate, and strategically adapt language within networked settings. First, instruction-tuned LLMs are recast as latent-relationship detectors: by prompting models to hypothesize links between text-described entities, we recover edge sets that reconstruct social, thematic, and citation graphs with high precision, revealing how attention distributions encode topological cues. Recognizing the difficulty …

Aluminum Alloys For Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing And Process Optimization By Machine Learning, Kevin Graydon
Aluminum Alloys For Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing And Process Optimization By Machine Learning, Kevin Graydon
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing is a promising manufacturing technology enabling enhanced design freedom through layer-by-layer production. However, traditional, wrought aluminum (Al) alloys suffer from solidification cracking during LPBF processing and the initial printer parameter optimization process required for every novel or untested material is time and resource intensive. There exists a need to formulate Al alloys for LPBF and a method to reduce the resources consumed during initial printer parameter optimization studies. Al-9.5Ce-xMo (x = 0.2, 0.6, 1.0 wt. %) alloys have been designed specifically for LPBF utilizing the CALPHAD approach. Additionally, a neural network model was …

Hetero-Cisgender Rituals: The Oppression Of Sexual- And Gender-Minoritized People, Bertha A. Ben Khallouq
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Among the groups that experience health inequalities in the United States, sexual- and gender-minoritized people figure prominently. Medical practitioners are tasked with alleviating these health inequalities, and it has been suggested that through the education of new physicians, we can decrease these inequalities. This perspective, however, neglects that medical students are social actors and their socialization begins long before medical school. In the present study, I develop a framework for understanding hetero-cisgender rituals that medical students experience and participate in before starting their medical training. I answer three research questions: (1) To what extent do medical students witness hetero-cisgender rituals? …

A Mathematical Modeling Approach To Investigate The Impacts Of Post-Infection Mortality And Partial Immunity On Disease Endemicity, Brendan M. Shrader
A Mathematical Modeling Approach To Investigate The Impacts Of Post-Infection Mortality And Partial Immunity On Disease Endemicity, Brendan M. Shrader
Honors Undergraduate Theses
A number of infectious diseases cause post-infection conditions or complications, such as COVID- 19, Q fever, and Polio. These conditions result in recovered individuals having a higher mortality rate than susceptibles, and this can impact disease dynamics. An existing mass-action model in the literature that incorporated post-infection mortality was shown to have limit cycles, or persistent oscillations, in the infected population. To better understand what causes these limit cycles, we develop and analyze a new epidemiological model with standard incidence. We show standard results, including the existence, uniqueness, and stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibria, and we rule out …

A Kinder Panopticon? Examining Effects Of Fairness And Justice On Performance Outcomes Under Advanced Electronic Monitoring Systems, William F. Tang
A Kinder Panopticon? Examining Effects Of Fairness And Justice On Performance Outcomes Under Advanced Electronic Monitoring Systems, William F. Tang
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The adoption of Electronic Performance Monitoring (EPM) systems has increased with the prevalence of remote workers post-COVID. Research indicates EPM yields conflicting performance and behavioral outcomes. EPM-related behavior can be predicted by organizational justice (the extent to which workplaces are perceived as fair in nature); environments with higher justice ratings are less likely to induce issues like stress and distrust. However, advanced EPM like electroencephalograms (EEG) may modulate the relationships between perceived fairness, stress, and work performance. This study assigned 42 participants to a modified vigilance test (based on Temple, et al., 2001), which participants took under 3 placebo monitoring …
