Cooperating Teachers’ Views And Practices About Teaching Emergent Bilinguals In General Education Classrooms, Tunde Szecsi, Janka Szilagyi
Journal of English Learner Education
Cooperating teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and practices influence teacher candidates’ views and practices. Therefore, this study examined mainstream cooperating teachers’ perceptions about critical components of effective instruction for English learners, and the relationship between these teachers’ perceptions and classroom practices. We interviewed 55 teachers and completed a 90-minute observation in each classroom. We analyzed the interviews for common themes, and we used descriptive statistics to summarize the observation data. The findings indicated that teachers were well-versed in evidence-based instructional activities and strategies. However, many teachers found it challenging to infuse ELs’ language, culture and experiential background into their instruction.

Addressing Language And Content In Civics Through A Language-Based Approach To Content Instruction For Multilingual Learners, Jia Gui, Luciana C. De Oliveira
Journal of English Learner Education
This study explores the integration of a language-based approach to content instruction’s (LACI) six Cs of support into an existing civics lesson plan to improve content and language learning for multilingual learners. We used the Civics for All curriculum from the New York City Department of Education to identify lesson plans that could be enhanced for teaching multilingual learners. The findings of integrating the LACI framework indicated that the existing lesson plans could be enhanced by adding all the Cs to ensure full support for multilingual learners. We conclude with strategies for integrating the LACI framework into existing civics lesson …

The Courts And Intercollegiate Athletics, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Over the past several weeks, the world of college sports has witnessed considerable turmoil and the prospect of major change. The future of the NCAA is in doubt, at least in its current form. The myth of the “student athlete” under the banner of amateurism is dead. The term should be laid to rest and never be seen in print again. It was a fabricated term created by former NCAA president, Walter Byers, designed to allow the NCAA to keep the money earned from intercollegiate athletics for itself, and out of the hands of the athletes.

On Sport and Society
It has been a very busy last six weeks or more for me and in the world of sport. There have been any number of things that have attracted my attention and normally would have prompted some comment here. At some point, I will return to some of those issues and events. Today, I will concentrate on one.

Human-Machine Communication
Trust certification through so-called trust seals is a common strategy to help users ascertain the trustworthiness of a system. In this study, we examined trust seals for AI systems from two perspectives: (1) In a pre-registered online study participants, we asked whether trust seals can increase user trust in AI systems, and (2) qualitatively, we investigated what participants expect from such AI seals of trust. Our results indicate mixed support for the use of AI seals. While trust seals generally did not affect the participants’ trust, their trust in the AI system increased if they trusted the seal-issuing institution. Moreover, …

Doctor Who?: Norms, Care, And Autonomy In The Attitudes Of Medical Students Towards Ai Pre And Post Chatgpt, Andrew Prahl, Kevin Tong Weng Jin
Human-Machine Communication
This study adopts the combined TAM-TPB model to investigate attitudes and expectations of machines at a pre-career stage. We study how future doctors (medical students) expect to interact with future AI machinery, what AI usage norms will develop, and beliefs about human and machine autonomy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. Wave one occurred six-months prior to the public release of ChatGPT; wave two occurred in the 6 months following. Three themes emerged: AI is tomorrow, wishing for the AI ouvrier, and human contrasts. Two differences were noted pre- versus post-ChatGPT: (1) participants began to view machinery instead of themselves as the …

Polysubstance use among young people has recently become the focus of popular media, public health interventions, and research due to alarming increases in polysubstance use-related morbidity and mortality in younger age groups. Data in Canada and the U.S. indicates that morbidity and mortality due to polysubstance use among youth is increasing. Researchers have shown that adult-focused interventions for polysubstance use cannot simply be ‘mapped onto’ youth, as young people occupy lifeworlds distinct from those of older adults. Adult-focused interventions may be irrelevant and not efficacious for youth. Further, some researchers have argued there need to more gender-targeted interventions to attenuate …

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This updated toolkit is a collaborative effort of ECMC Foundations research fellows from the University of Central Florida as well as U.S. academic experts with experience in postsecondary and secondary CTE teacher recruitment, training, and retention. The purpose is to create a digital toolkit of practical and proven strategies for the hiring and retention of quality postsecondary CTE teachers. This toolkit contains similar information from seven U.S. states and two U.S. territories regarding their CTE teacher policies and practices including lessons learned and best practices. By comparing similar information in a digital toolkit, CTE leaders and stakeholders have easily accessible …
Cyberbullying Detection On Twitter Data Using Machine Learning Classifiers, Pradip Dhakal
Cyberbullying Detection On Twitter Data Using Machine Learning Classifiers, Pradip Dhakal
Data Science and Data Mining
This study compares some of the popular machine learning techniques like Logistic Regression, Multinomial Naive Bayes, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Extreme Gradient Boosting to classify the tweets into three different categories: cyberbullying based on religion, cyberbullying based on ethnicity, or no cyberbullying. First, various data-cleaning approaches are used to clean the tweet data. After the data is clean and ready, the word embedding techniques, such as a bag of words and term frequency-Inverse document frequency, are used to convert the words into mathematical vectors. Finally, the model will be fitted using the combination of the above-mentioned word embedding techniques and machine …

Staff Advisory Council Meeting Agendas
A meeting agenda is a list of the topics that will be discussed during a meeting, along with other details. The agenda is usually shared with participants before the meeting so they can prepare. The agenda's purpose is to give participants a clear outline of what should happen in the meeting, who will lead each task, and how long each step should take.

Ucf Pegasus Plan – 3rd Grade – The Constitution, Shakira D. Reeves, Giulietta Wetzel, Elizabeth Pauly, Julia Cusack
Pegasus Plans: Social Studies Unit Plans for Florida Teachers
During this unit, students will explore how the U.S. Constitution serves as the foundation for government, fulfilling its purpose and addressing societal needs. Students will delve into the structures, functions, powers, and limitations of government as outlined in both the U.S. and Florida Constitutions. Additionally, students will also learn about Federalism, the multi-level nature of government, and will learn to recognize the different responsibilities of government at the local, state, and national levels. Lastly, students will practice identifying an author's purpose within informational texts as they deepen their understanding of complex concepts related to governance and constitutional frameworks.
