Image Restoration Strategies For The (Mis-) Handling Of Covid – 19 Pandemic In Greece, Neofytos Aspriadis

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

During the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak all countries around the world used several kinds of response strategies to protect public health and control the outbreak. The main aim was to stop the disease from spreading into the community and put a pressure on the health system of the countries. However, severe measures like lockdown of cities and countries brought side-crises like economic pressure on the individuals, corporations and even the state itself. Although the Greek Government was considered to have managed the first phase of the crisis in March effectively, during the aftermath of the first phase, the complete opening of …

Applications Of The Match Model To Analyze Student Problem-Solving, Barbara Chiu Jan 2021

Applications Of The Match Model To Analyze Student Problem-Solving, Barbara Chiu

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Problem-solving has been recognized as a critical skill that students lack in the current education system, due to the use of algorithmic questions in tests that can be simply memorized and solved without conceptual understanding. Research on student problem-solving is needed to gain deeper insight into how students are approaching problems and where they lack proficiency so that instruction can help students gain a conceptual understanding of chemistry. The MAtCH (methods, analogies, theory, context, how) model was recently developed from expert explanations of their research and could be a valuable model to identify key components of student problem-solving. This project …

Reviving Mozart With Intelligence Duplication, Jacob E. Galajda Jan 2021

Reviving Mozart With Intelligence Duplication, Jacob E. Galajda

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Deep learning has been applied to many problems that are too complex to solve through an algorithm. Most of these problems have not required the specific expertise of a certain individual or group; most applied networks learn information that is shared across humans intuitively. Deep learning has encountered very few problems that would require the expertise of a certain individual or group to solve, and there has yet to be a defined class of networks capable of achieving this. Such networks could duplicate the intelligence of a person relative to a specific task, such as their writing style or music …

Simulating Systematic Errors In Exoplanetary Transits For The James Webb Space Telescope, David C. Wright Iii

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a next-generation space telescope that will be capable of making transformative observations of planetary transits. As its launch date grows ever closer, it becomes imperative that astronomers have access to accurate simulations of JWST observations in order to best plan observations and devise data analysis pipelines. Unfortunately, available simulation tools do not provide the most accurate or realistic simulations, including noise and systematic errors. In this thesis, I present an open-source time-domain simulator of planetary transits that is capable of accurately modeling these effects in observations made by JWST.
