Using Expectation Violation Theory To Evaluate Dialectal Bias In Courtroom Contexts, Christina Joseph Dec 2021

Using Expectation Violation Theory To Evaluate Dialectal Bias In Courtroom Contexts, Christina Joseph

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

There is much evidence to indicate the role of speaker accent expectations and its impacts on the subsequent rating of the speaker. Additionally, examples including the Central Park Five as well as Rachel Jeantel of the Trayvon Martin case indicate the impacts of this speaker rating particularly in the context of the courtroom. This necessitates the further evaluation of the impact of dialectal bias on speaker ratings especially in the context of a courtroom due to the severity of the impacts. Utilizing a 4x2 between subjects experimental design manipulating on the basis of both dialect and speaker expectation, this study …

A Mixed-Methods, Grounded Theory Study Of Online Meaning-Making During The Pandemic, Kaitlyn Montcrieff Dec 2021

A Mixed-Methods, Grounded Theory Study Of Online Meaning-Making During The Pandemic, Kaitlyn Montcrieff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

To be human is to seek to understand the known and unknown world. The Covid-19 pandemic offers researchers the opportunity to examine online meaning-making on a more ubiquitous magnitude than ever experienced in history, without positioning the digital world as less authentic, or distinct, from the physical. Using mixed-methods grounded theory, this study posed the research question: (RQ) How do high school parents use an online community to (re)conceptualize aspects of contemporary society? The NRC Emotion Intensity lexicon (Mohammed, 2018) was used to score online forum posts from 2018-2021 using eight emotions to quantitatively represent changes over time. The qualitative …

The Effects Of A Tactile Display On First Responder Performance, Michael Schwartz Dec 2021

The Effects Of A Tactile Display On First Responder Performance, Michael Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Firefighting is a dangerous and difficult task. Simulation affords researchers and practitioners the ability to examine performance and training in adverse conditions while preserving life, offering repeatable scenarios, and reducing costs. Multiple Resource Theory is used in this study as a model for assessing alternate sensory channels for information delivery when the optimal channel is not available. Specifically, this study tests the influence of a waist-worn vibrotactile display to assist navigation when visibility is reduced in a firefighter simulation. The present study measures participants' objective performance and self-reported workload while navigating a simulated fireground. Results from 70 research participants revealed …

Bringing Instagram Posts Into Being: A Study Of Fyc Students' Self-Sponsored Posting Practices And Transfer Opportunities, Jessica Kester

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Social media platforms have offered students—and all of us—more opportunities for self-sponsored writing. In response to calls from researchers to explore students' 21st-century writing practices and their relevance to college writing instruction, this dissertation articulated and applied a feminist teacher research methodology and a mixed-methods research design to explore first-year composition (FYC) students' self-sponsored writing practices, attitudes, and transfer opportunities on a popular, albeit under-examined, social media application: Instagram. This study found that students have developed elaborate, rhetorical, multimodal composing processes that include planning, drafting, evaluating, selecting, and styling images as well as planning, drafting/revising, and styling captions. Additionally, though …

Leveraging Multimodal Learning Analytics To Understand How Humans Learn With Emerging Technologies, Elizabeth Cloude Dec 2021

Leveraging Multimodal Learning Analytics To Understand How Humans Learn With Emerging Technologies, Elizabeth Cloude

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Major education and training challenges are plaguing the United States in preparing the next generation of the future workforce to meet the demands of the 21st Century. Several calls have been released to improve education programs to ensure learners are acquiring 21st century knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs). As we embark on the digital and automation ages of the 21st century, it is essential that we move away from traditional education programs that define and measure KSAs as static constructs (e.g., standardized assessments) with little consideration of the actual real-time deployment of these processes, missing critical information on the degree …

Study Of Mos2/High-K Interface And Implementation Of Mos2 Based Memristor For Neuromorphic Computing Applications, Durjoy Dev Dec 2021

Study Of Mos2/High-K Interface And Implementation Of Mos2 Based Memristor For Neuromorphic Computing Applications, Durjoy Dev

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The scientific world is witnessing an unprecedented triumph of artificial neural network (ANN)- a computing system inspired by the biological neural network. With the enthralling quest for Internet of Everything (IoE), it is expected to have an unparalleled dominance of ANN in our day-to-day life. In recent times, memristor has come as an emerging candidate to realize ANN through emulating biological synapse and neuron behavior. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), one well-known two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), has drawn interest for high speed, flexible, low power electronic devices since it has a tunable bandgap, reasonable carrier mobility, high Young's modulus, and …

Hermeneutics Of Hate: How Martin Luther's Rhetorical Manipulation Of The Greek Bible Led To His Anti-Judaic Treatise On The Jews And Their Lies, Michael Parrish Dec 2021

Hermeneutics Of Hate: How Martin Luther's Rhetorical Manipulation Of The Greek Bible Led To His Anti-Judaic Treatise On The Jews And Their Lies, Michael Parrish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Though lauded as a Protestant hero, it is impossible to read Martin Luther's On the Jews and Their Lies and not think about the numerous acts of violence inspired by his commentary. Luther argues that his anti-Judaic treatise is simply reiterating the Greek Bible (the New Testament) and anyone who reads the Greek Bible would come to the same conclusion. This thesis argues that Luther adopted a hermeneutical Jew from theologians and the Greek Bible before him to create his own hermeneutics that demonized the European Jewish population with devastating consequence. Though much of the Greek Bible was part of …

Investigating The Role Of The Skeletal Muscle In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Neuromuscular Junction Dysfunction, Agnes Badu-Mensah Dec 2021

Investigating The Role Of The Skeletal Muscle In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Neuromuscular Junction Dysfunction, Agnes Badu-Mensah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Neuromuscular junction (NMJ) dysfunction has been identified as one of the earliest events in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) pathology. However, which tissue type induces NMJ disruption; be it the motoneurons (hMN), Schwann cells or skeletal muscle (hSKM) remains unresolved. While mechanisms by which ALS hMN contribute to NMJ dysfunction are well-described in literature, limited information exist on how the other tissue types in the tripartite synapse (hSKM and Schwann cells) induce and/or contribute to ALS NMJ disruption. A fair understanding of the role of each tissue type in NMJ dysfunction would help shape the trajectory of future ALS research and …

Mermaids Riding Alligators: Divided Command On The Southern Frontier, 1776-1778, W. Calvin Smith Nov 2021

Mermaids Riding Alligators: Divided Command On The Southern Frontier, 1776-1778, W. Calvin Smith

Florida Historical Quarterly

George Clemenceau's oft-quoted remark that war was too important a matter to entrust to the military simply put into words a thought prevalent in the western civil mind at least since the days of the Roman Republic. The obverse, that politics is too vital a business to be left to politicians, is equally true in the western military mind but less-often spoken. For a general to utter these words would bring immediate accusations of a “Caesar-complex” or worse. That twentieth-century playwrights would permit such a statement only from a power-mad, insanely-obsessed general, such as Jack Ripper in the production, Dr. …

Fort Foster: A Second Seminole War Fort, Michael G. Schene

Florida Historical Quarterly

On November 4, 1836, Major General Thomas Sidney Jesup, recent quatermaster general of the army, was appointed supreme commander in Florida. His orders carried specific instructions to campaign along the Withlacoochee River, occupy the country between this river and Tampa Bay, and establish forts at strategic points in the interior that would ensure safety for the settlers and provide regular supplies for his command.

Theodore Roosevelt Entertains Booker T. Washington: Florida's Reaction To The White House Dinner, John K. Severn Nov 2021

Theodore Roosevelt Entertains Booker T. Washington: Florida's Reaction To The White House Dinner, John K. Severn

Florida Historical Quarterly

"It was merely an incident that had no thought or motive behind it except the convenience of the President.“ Thus did Booker T. Washington, president of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and the most influential black leader in America, later describe a dinner he attended as the guest of President Theodore Roosevelt in the White House on the evening of October 16, 1901. The Negro educator’s account was too subdued an estimate of what became a cause célèbre with ramifications that were racial, social, political, and sectional. In the furor that followed the dinner party, citizens of Florida played a part.

The Spaniards And William Augustus Bowles In Florida, 1799-1803, Robert Allen Matter

Florida Historical Quarterly

Napoleon Bonaparte by 1799 had either conquered his European enemies or had pacified them, and only Great Britain stood between him and complete mastery of the continent. Spain since 1795 had been a rather reluctant ally of France, and thus her coast and the coasts of her colonies, including those along the Gulf coast, had become subject to the depredations of almost overwhelming British sea power. To further plague the Spaniards another problem materialized in 1799—the return to Florida of William Augustus Bowles.

Missions In The Defense Of Spanish Florida, 1566-1710, Robert Allen Matter Nov 2021

Missions In The Defense Of Spanish Florida, 1566-1710, Robert Allen Matter

Florida Historical Quarterly

Students of Colonial Latin America generally credit its Indian mission systems as effective instruments of frontier defense. A study of the Spanish missions of Florida does not support this thesis. The “paper” bulwark provided by the Florida missions when challenged could represent a significant exception to the alleged importance of the defense role of the church in the Indies. Or, it could reveal that the missionaries played an ineffective part in the defense of Latin-American frontiers. Regardless, Florida’s story suggests the need for a critical re-examination of the premise that religious missions held strategic areas beyond the line of established …

Vicente Pazos, Agent For The Amelia Island Filibusters, 1818, Charles H. Bowman, Jr. Nov 2021

Vicente Pazos, Agent For The Amelia Island Filibusters, 1818, Charles H. Bowman, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

The appearance of a North American squadron under John D. Henley and a land force under James Bankhead at the mouth of the St. Marys River on December 18, 1817, with orders to move against Luis Aury and his establishment on Amelia Island, compelled the filibusters to abandon posthaste their illfated Republic of the Floridas. Aury had occupied the island since September under the flag of Mexico. It was obvious that the North American fighting power was superior to any that Aury could muster and that surrender of the island was inevitable.

Florida Gubernatorial Politics: The Fuller Warren Years, David R. Colburn

Florida Historical Quarterly

Inaguration Day, January 3, 1949, dawned overcast and rainy in Tallahassee. The inclement weather, however, did not dampen the enthusiasm of a large crowd that lined the route from the executive mansion to the capitol to greet the new governor, Fuller Warren. With typical inaugural fanfare, Warren was escorted to the steps of the capitol by marching guardsmen and a band which periodically broke into a rendition of “Suwannee River,” the state song. After taking the oath of office, Warren gave a brief inaugural address in which he called for governmental economy, pine tree prosperity, citrus reform, increased tourism, and …

Vicente Pazos And The Amelia Island Affair, 1817, Charles H. Bowman, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

On May 9, 1817, seven distinguished patriots from Buenos Aires arrived at Savannah on board the English cutter Hero. The number included Vicente Pazos, editor of La Crónica Argentina. Their departure from the Río de la Plata had helped rid Supreme Director Juan Martín de Pueyrredón of his most virulent detractors. Born in the province of Larecaja in Upper Peru in 1779, Pazos was descended from the Aymará Indians who resided around Lake Titicaca. After attending the Royal and Pontifical University of San Antonio de Abad in Cuzco where he received his doctorate in sacred theology in 1804, Pazos taught …

Greens, Grist And Guernseys: Development Of The Florida State Agricultural Marketing System, Martin M. Lagodna Nov 2021

Greens, Grist And Guernseys: Development Of The Florida State Agricultural Marketing System, Martin M. Lagodna

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Federal Governments role in aiding farmers is well known; the states’s relationship to agriculture has not been very well chronicled. Florida, for example, was slow in responding to federal stimuli in the early twentieth century, but once underway the state developed innovative programs to help farmers with their economic problems. Agriculture specialists believed that distribution of goods rather than production was the major problem. In the American capitalist system the markets functioned as the distributive agencies. The economists focused their attention on agricultural marketing and importuned government to assist with this endeavor.

Foreigners In Florida: A Study Of Immigration Promotion, 1865-1910, George E. Pozzetta

Florida Historical Quarterly

For most of the long American period, Floridians have been deeply concerned with the problem of attracting people to the borders of their state. Though the motivations behind the various efforts to induce migration into the state have changed, ranging from early desires simply to populate uninhabited lands to more modern concerns of tourism and development, the spirit has been remarkably consistent. Indeed, it has only been within the last few years that the “heresy” of imposing legal limits on population growth has been listened to with any degree of toleration. In no other period of Florida’s past, however, have …

When A Minority Becomes The Majority: Blacks In Jacksonville Politics, 1887-1907, Edward N. Akin

Florida Historical Quarterly

With the end of Reconstruction in 1876, the national Republican party abandoned the blacks of the South to state governments controlled by native southern whites. This traditional textbook interpretation of the plight of blacks in the Bourbon South rested on two implicit assumptions: the black was dependent on national Republicanism for protection; and, with the end of this protective system, blacks ceased to be a viable independent political element.1 When blacks did vote during the Bourbon era, they were pictured as sheep being led by conservative whites. An example of this voting behavior in an urban setting is recounted in …

Lieutenant Colonel James Robertson's Mission To The Floridas, 1763, Robert R. Rea Nov 2021

Lieutenant Colonel James Robertson's Mission To The Floridas, 1763, Robert R. Rea

Florida Historical Quarterly

The British acquisition of Florida and the Gulf coast from Spain and France in 1763 represented the rounding out of both continental and Caribbean boundaries, the fulfillment of Pitt’s triumphant vision of imperial expansion. But neither the Great Commoner nor the common Englishman had a very clear notion of those territories which were transformed into the provinces of East and West Florida. A misleading propaganda campaign might educate London coffeeshop habitués to the beauties and prospective riches of the new colonies, but the British army in North America needed more realistic information in order to establish that internal security upon …
