Automation, Take The Wheel: An Examination Of Factors Influencing Trust In Automated Driver Assist Technologies, James Ferraro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Driving technology has progressed significantly since the introduction of anti-lock braking and cruise control decades ago. Current driver assist features can alert drivers of oncoming vehicles and even take control to keep the vehicle centered within its lane. The level of trust that people place in automation can impact how they monitor and accept these automated systems. Previous research has shown several performance outcomes associated with improper calibrations of trust in automation. However, there is still a need to examine trust in the context of advanced driving technologies. Research has yet to sufficiently investigate factors influencing trust in assistive driving …

A Study Of Autorotation: Samara Seed Pods And Tethered Autogyros, Jonathan Mcconnell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This work presents an exploration of autorotational behavior, observing naturally occurring structures to provide insight into the stability and design of autorotative mechanisms. A rotor is said to be in autorotation when, in the presence of airflow, a natural rotation generates lift to either suspend or slow the descent of a rotor. This phenomenon is observed in nature in the form of samaras, a seed pod morphology evolved in parallel by maple trees and many other organisms around the world. Simulation and experimental observation of samara vertical descent behavior provides insight into the stability of naturally evolved autorotative structures. A …

Raman Excitation Laser Effects On Peak Parameters And Peak Metamorphic Temperatures Of Primitive Carbonaceous Chondrites, Amy Lebleu-Debartola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

MicroRaman (µRaman) spectroscopy is often regarded as a non-destructive technique, utilized to analyze limited materials, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial. Carbonaceous chondrite meteorites are of particular interest but they are dark (low albedo) materials, and thus absorb the majority of incident visible light. Raman excitation lasers can induce considerable localized heating, even when low laser powers are used. It has been previously suggested to utilize low power lasers of =0.4 mW to minimize damaging carbonaceous samples in several fields, including Meteoritics, Geology, Chemistry, and Paleontology. Peak Metamorphic Temperatures (PMT) experienced by the meteorite can be estimated from Raman fitting parameters related …

Investigating The Relationship Between The Microbiome And Neuroactive Metabolites In Huntington Disease Model Mice, Christian Millot Jan 2022

Investigating The Relationship Between The Microbiome And Neuroactive Metabolites In Huntington Disease Model Mice, Christian Millot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Huntington Disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by a trinucleotide repeat expansion mutation in the huntingtin (HTT) gene. HD is characterized by neurological symptoms, including motor, cognitive, and psychiatric decline. A non-neurological symptom, metabolic dysfunction, is also common in HD and can cause weight change, a feature recapitulated in HD mice. There is a need for a better understanding of the weight changes associated with HD, because patients with a higher body mass index show slower disease progression. Our lab has shown that metabolic dysfunction in HD mice is the result of a disrupted circadian feeding rhythm …

Investigation Of Realism In Facial Characteristics And Anthropomorphic Language In The Design Of Multimedia Instruction, Ecem Olcum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Emotional design elements have recently been added to the research in cognitive load and multimedia learning (Um et al., 2012). One aspect of eliciting positive emotions is to use anthropomorphic design, which has been found to increase learning performance (Um et al., 2012; Plass et al., 2014; Park et al., 2015; Schneider et al., 2018). The current research aimed to investigate three design factors in three studies: anthropomorphism in verbal and visual design, single-frame or multi-frame illustrations, and realism of the anthropomorphic visual design. The first study confirmed that the anthropomorphic verbal and visual materials were perceived as anthropomorphic by …

Role Of Biological Clocks In Ant Behavioral Plasticity And Parasitic Manipulation Of Ant Behavior, Biplabendu Das Jan 2022

Role Of Biological Clocks In Ant Behavioral Plasticity And Parasitic Manipulation Of Ant Behavior, Biplabendu Das

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Living organisms exhibit daily rhythms as a way to anticipate predictable fluctuations in their environment. Such daily rhythmicity is the phenotypic outcome of oscillating genes and proteins, driven by an endogenous biological clock. Clock-controlled behavioral rhythms are inherently "flexible" since their phase, amplitude, and period can change throughout an animal's life hallmarked by changes in so-called chronotype. How this inherent plasticity of clock-controlled rhythms is linked to plasticity of behavior is still an open question in biology. Characterizing the various mechanistic links between plasticity of the animal clock and behavioral state will not only shed light on the molecular underpinnings …

Can Feeling Like An Imposter Be Favorable? A Qualitative Study On The Role Of Appraisal In Harnessing The Imposter Phenomenon For Growth, Emily Hill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The imposter phenomenon is a psychological experience characterized by feelings of self-doubt and personal incompetence that persist despite evidence of achievement and success. Employees with these imposter-like thoughts feel as if they ended up in notable roles and positions not because of merit, but from oversight or luck. Research and popular press articles have portrayed the imposter phenomenon as a negative experience, bringing costs to the individual's well-being and work life. Yet, recent research has revealed that perhaps a favorable trajectory to the imposter experience might exist. To address this question, participants were identified and interviewed using a two-phase, sequential …

Imaging Based Beam Steering For Optical Communication And Lidar Applications, Sajad Saghaye Polkoo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Optical beam steering is a key component in any application that requires dynamic (i.e. realtime control) of beam propagation through free-space. Example applications include remote sensing, spectroscopy, laser machining, targeting, Lidar, optical wireless communications (OWC) and more. The pointing control requirements for many of these applications can be met by traditional mechanical steering techniques; however, these solutions tend to be bulky, slow, expensive, power hungry and prone to mechanical failures leading to short component lifetimes. Two emerging applications, Lidar imaging and OWC, truly need improved beam-steering capabilities to flourish and support the advancement of self-driving cars or relieve the congestion …

A Measurement System For Detection Of Intestinal Motility In Neonates By Monitoring Slow Wave Activity, Garett Goodale Jan 2022

A Measurement System For Detection Of Intestinal Motility In Neonates By Monitoring Slow Wave Activity, Garett Goodale

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Similar to how electrocardiographic waves are the pace making signals of the heart, slow waves are the pace making signals of the intestines. Slow waves are electrical signals in the intestines that determine the speed at which food can move through the intestine ensuring proper digestion and uptake of nutrients. It has been shown that slow waves can be measured in adults using non-invasive, surface electrodes. However, no study has investigated the measurements of slow waves in neonates, specifically pre-term neonates. Around 7% of pre-term neonates suffer from necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) which is a condition that causes damage to the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Feature engineering is one of the most important components in data mining and machine learning. One of the key thrusts in data mining is to answer: How should a low-dimensional geometry structure be extracted and reconstructed from high-dimensional data? To solve this issue, researchers proposed feature selection, PCA, sparsity regularization, factorization, embedding, and deep learning. However, existing techniques are limited in achieving full automation, globally optimal, and explainable explicitness. Can I address the automation, optimal, and explainability challenges in data geometry reconstruction? A low-dimensional data geometry structure is crucial for SciML methods (e.g., GP models), and the accuracy of these …

This dissertation presents the proof of concept for the Hurricane Imaging Radiometer (HIRAD), where remote sensing retrievals of the 2-dimensional wind and rain fields for several hurricanes are validated with independent measurements. A significant contribution of this dissertation is the development of a novel statistical calibration technique, whereby the HIRAD instrument is radiometrically calibrated, using modeled brightness temperatures (Tb) generated using a priori hurricane wind and rain fields that are statistically representative of the actual hurricane conditions at the time of the HIRAD brightness temperature measurements. For this calibration technique, the probability distribution function of the measured HIRAD Tb's is …

Mixed-Criticality System Design For Real-Time Scheduling And Routing Upon Platforms With Uncertainties, Sudharsan Vaidhun Bhaskar Jan 2022

Mixed-Criticality System Design For Real-Time Scheduling And Routing Upon Platforms With Uncertainties, Sudharsan Vaidhun Bhaskar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Unlike typical computing systems, applications in real-time systems require strict timing guarantees. In the pursuit of providing guarantees, the complex dynamic behaviors of these systems are simplified using models to keep the analysis tractable. In order to guarantee safety, such models often involve pessimistic assumptions. While the amount of pessimism was reasonable for simple computing platforms, for modern platforms the pessimism involves ignoring features that improve performance such as cache usage, instruction pipelines, and more. In this work, we explore routing and scheduling problems in real-time systems, where the uncertainties in the operation are carefully accounted for by complex models …

Not All Influence Is Born Equal: On The Effects Of Various Types Of Behavioral Influence Relationships On Social Media, Chathurani Senevirathna Jan 2022

Not All Influence Is Born Equal: On The Effects Of Various Types Of Behavioral Influence Relationships On Social Media, Chathurani Senevirathna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Typically, online social influence is analyzed using a single metric approach. However, social influence is not monolithic; different users exercise different influences in different ways, and influence is correlated with the user and content-specific attributes. One such attribute could be whether the action is an initiation of a new post, a contribution to a post, or a sharing of an existing post. Thus, this dissertation uses this platform-independent action classification and models the influence as multiple entities and examines social networks through the perspective of behavioral influence propagation. Two empirical studies are present in this dissertation. The first study presents …

A Flexible 3d Architecture For Cooling Future Generation Devices, Khan Mohammad Rabbi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Systems that consume and convert energy produce thermal energy as a byproduct. This generation of thermal energy, if not dissipated properly, contributes to the significant temperature rise of the overall system. This temperature rise can lead to reduced efficiency and system-level failure. Future technologies will continue to face such thermal challenges. In fact, next-gen devices will demand flexible thermal management architectures for high-performance operation. To tackle these challenges, innovative liquid cooling technologies and high-speed thermal diagnostic systems must be developed simultaneously. Active and passive pulsation-liquid-cooling techniques are currently an attractive thermal management solution. In an active cooling mode, the influence …

Multivariate Cognitive Walkthrough Of Qubitvr: An Educational Quantum Computing, Virtual Reality Application, Pauline Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Quantum computing is a promising field but understanding how it works can be challenging for a beginner. There are also not many educational resources to visualize and learn about quantum computing. To advance knowledge in this area, we have created QubitVR, which employs a Bloch sphere representation of a qubit, and supports trajectory visualizations and state equations in a virtual reality (VR) setting. We also conducted a multivariate cognitive walkthrough with subject matter experts (SMEs) on QubitVR to assess the effectiveness of trajectory visualizations and state equations in learning about quantum gates. The results were that trajectory visualizations aided users …

Quantum Graph Parameters, Parisa Darbari Kozekanan Jan 2022

Quantum Graph Parameters, Parisa Darbari Kozekanan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This dissertation considers some of the advantages, and limits, of applying quantum computing to solve two important graph problems. The first is estimating a graph's quantum chromatic number. The quantum chromatic number is the minimum number of colors necessary in a two-player game where the players cannot communicate but share an entangled state and must convince a referee with probability one that they have a proper vertex coloring. We establish several spectral lower bounds for the quantum chromatic number. These lower bounds extend the well-known Hoffman lower bound for the classical chromatic number. The second is the Pattern Matching on …
