Wastewater Treatment Plant Control, David Milton Knowles Jan 1972

Wastewater Treatment Plant Control, David Milton Knowles

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report is the result of investigation of the feasibility of increasing the use of autamatic controls at the Florida Technological University Wastewater Treatment Plant. This investigation was to include a literature search and visits to wastewater treatment plants. During the writers course of study, he was privileged to make a series of tests of a residual chlorine analyzer which was made in the school shop. Since this work was closely related to automatic controls the data are included in this report.

Solid Waste Management At Florida Technological University, Robert F. Hever Jan 1972

Solid Waste Management At Florida Technological University, Robert F. Hever

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This paper is a report on a study of the management of solid wastes at Florida Technological University (FTU). This study endeavors to provide a basis for effective planning for disposal of FTU's solid wastes, both in the next few years and at the time of maximum FTU population. Essentially, the study affirms that the present system of refuse collection by a private contractor is the best method of disposal, with the possibility that recycling of mixed paper may become feasible at some future time.

Remote Sensing Of Environmental Parameters, Wendell Princeton Perkins Jan 1972

Remote Sensing Of Environmental Parameters, Wendell Princeton Perkins

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Atmospheric pollution in some degree has been around since time began. In recent times it has reached levels in some areas which proved to be harmful to man's health. A brief history review of these occurrences is presented. Laws have been enacted to combat this threat. A brief review of these laws is presented. Instruments for remote sensing of polluting sources are being developed to monitor ambient air quality and aid in enforcing these laws. A review of the techniques employed and the present state of the art is explored. Available instruments are presented in section III-5.

Conversion And Validation Of Sigart Program, A Progressive Traffic Signal Lights System Computer Model, Dennis F. Troyan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research paper was to translate a Computer Model (SIGART), capable of simulating a progressive traffic signal lights system, from Burroughs B5500 FORTRAN II to the IBM 360 FORTRAN IV computer language, to outline the program algorithm, to set up detailed program documentation and to validate this model by applying practical system data. Expansion of the SIGART program by addition of an option to produce a time space plot of the output data utilizing a Calcomp plotter was also to be considered.

Automation In Banking, Donald P. Matteson Jan 1972

Automation In Banking, Donald P. Matteson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

It has been estimated that the Apollo Program, which placed a man on the moon, each year produced enough paper work, that if put on one stack, would reach to the moon. The forthcoming Space Shuttle Program will require even more documentation; however, present plans call for very little paperwork. The necessary documentation will instead be created, updated and retained in a large computer data base with access throughout the country. Present technology will support this system. The banking industry has been faced with a similar problem in the processing of demand deposit records (checks) and other repetitive tasks. Banks …

The Restoration Of Lake Waters, Charles James Boyter Jan 1972

The Restoration Of Lake Waters, Charles James Boyter

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Lake restoration procedures are reviewed with the objective of making recommendations toward future lake restorations for central Florida lakes. The progress of drawdown for restoration is examined. A total phosphorus model is developed for Lake Eola to predict the success of the drawdown. No one restoration procedure should be applied to every lake in central Florida. Each situation must be studied separately. It appears that lake drawdown was the best technique to use for Lake Eola. However, the stormwater inputs and free-flowing drains must be purified to insure the success of the drawdown or the Lake will return within the …

The Operations Research Approach For An Effective Management Information System, Joel L. Mutzman Jan 1972

The Operations Research Approach For An Effective Management Information System, Joel L. Mutzman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report serves as an overview to the design of an effective Management Information System (MIS) by incorporating the modeling techniques of an Operations Research (OR) approach. It will be shown that the consideration of OR input requirements mixed with the information requirements for a data base existing at the everyday accounting and operational level creates a responsible management control and decision-making tool. This mix of OR and everyday information approach varies as a function of the managerial activities and the organizational level of effort. In lieu of designing a "total" MIS system, MIS designers should structure a loosely connected …

Feasibility Study Of A New Approach To Resolve Radar Range Bin Ambiguity, Donald Shue Yee Jan 1972

Feasibility Study Of A New Approach To Resolve Radar Range Bin Ambiguity, Donald Shue Yee

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report describes the study of a new approach to resolve pulse radar range bin ambiguity problem. The nature and the cause of the problem are discussed, and various methods presently used to solve this problem are presented. The report points out the disadvantages of these methods and, thus, introduces a new approach to resolve the radar range bin ambiguity problem by examining the reasonableness of the trajectory of the object being traced. Necessary algorithm and computer programs to support the study are given in Appendices I, II, and III.

Computer Method For Airport Noise Exposure Forecast, John Michael Bateman Jan 1972

Computer Method For Airport Noise Exposure Forecast, John Michael Bateman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The major problem facing air transportation for the next decade is aircraft noise. The noise level due to the operation of large jet aircraft has created a very serious annoyance problem to the people living near of adjacent to jet airports. The noise problem has developed both for take-off and landing operations of these aircraft with take -off noise causing the greatest annoyance factor. A technique called Noise Exposure Forecast (NEF) has been developed to identify the annoyance factor of these noises to people and activities on the ground. With these NEF ratings or numbers, planners can better determine the …
