A Purely Business Motive: German-American Lumber Company, 1901-1918, Edward F. Keuchel Nov 2021

A Purely Business Motive: German-American Lumber Company, 1901-1918, Edward F. Keuchel

Florida Historical Quarterly

"The German-American Lumber Company had no motive except a purely business motive." So stated Gerhard Rolfs, treasurer of the company, as the federal government proceeded to take over this German-owned business during World War I. At issue was the charge that the firm was a front organization for German espionage operations during the war. This, as the evidence revealed, was not the case. Yet the emotional fervors of a nation at war had created suspicions about the alien-owned lumber company which had been an important part of Florida’s yellow-pine industry. The German-American Lumber Company was not a subversive organization. To …

East Florida In 1834: Letters Of Dr. John Durkee, W. Stanley Hoole Nov 2021

East Florida In 1834: Letters Of Dr. John Durkee, W. Stanley Hoole

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the summer of 1833 Dr. John Durkee, for more than ten years a practicing physician in Meredith Bridge (now a part of Laconia), New Hampshire, traveled to East Florida for the benefit of his health.1 Settling in Jacksonville, a village of fewer than 250 people and about twenty houses and stores, he soon recuperated sufficiently to lead an active life.2 He rode horseback into the hinterland of Duval County, hunted, fished, and because of his scientific background interested himself primarily in such subjects as alligators, snakes, deer, birds, trees, cattle, soils, and Indian archeology. Meantime, he kept abreast of …

Postal Operations In Territorial Florida, 1821-1845, Richard J. Stanaback Nov 2021

Postal Operations In Territorial Florida, 1821-1845, Richard J. Stanaback

Florida Historical Quarterly

Florida in 1821 was transferred from Spanish to American control and the need of providing the territory with internal and external lines of communication was a problem that called for immediate solution. The post office department, which had the responsibility of transporting the mails, played a major role in helping meet the Florida situation. Creating internal communication routes proved formidable since post offices, post roads, and postal personnel had to be supplied before mail service could exist.

Martin Tabert, Martyr Of An Era, N. Gordon Carper Nov 2021

Martin Tabert, Martyr Of An Era, N. Gordon Carper

Florida Historical Quarterly

Martin Tabert, in his desire to “see the world,” unfortunately met an untimely death in Florida. The national publicity given the circumstances surrounding his death provided the catalyst Floridians needed to abolish the cruel and corrupt convict-lease system, a peculiarly southern institution given impetus during the Civil War-Reconstruction era.

Rise Of The "Businessman's Politician": The 1924 Florida Gubernatorial Race, Victoria H. Mcdonell Nov 2021

Rise Of The "Businessman's Politician": The 1924 Florida Gubernatorial Race, Victoria H. Mcdonell

Florida Historical Quarterly

The 1920s in Florida reflected the enormous social and economic changes that were occurring throughout the United States. The conservatism of the period, exemplified by high tariffs, the passage of the Volstead Act, and the growth of right wing groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, performed an uneasy counterpoint to the new currents of change. Urban growth, rapid economic development, and the proliferation of transportation and communications facilities foretold the future complexion of American life, As Floridians approached the 1924 gubernatorial campaign they were faced with two alternatives: electing men who were committed to holding on to the past …

Economic Basis Of The Seventeenth-Century Florida Missions, Robert Allen Matter Nov 2021

Economic Basis Of The Seventeenth-Century Florida Missions, Robert Allen Matter

Florida Historical Quarterly

Many Americans are familiar with the chain of Franciscan missions in Spanish California. Less well-known is the significant Franciscan mission system that flourished among the Florida Indians more than a century before the friars founded their first Upper California mission at San Diego in 1769. The Franciscans began their program in Florida in the late sixteenth century, fter the collapse in martyrdom of a relatively weak, five-year Jesuit effort. Within a hundred years the friars had forged their mission chains from the presidio at St. Augustine some 200 miles north along the Florida and Georgia coasts, to the vicinity of …

William V. Knott And The Gubernatorial Campaign Of 1916, Wayne Flynt Nov 2021

William V. Knott And The Gubernatorial Campaign Of 1916, Wayne Flynt

Florida Historical Quarterly

Sometime around 1958, William V. Knott recorded his impressions of the 1916 gubernatorial contest for a graduate student in New England. Much of this material was already available, especially in the master’s thesis by John R. Deal, Jr., "Sidney Johnston Catts, Stormy Petrel of Florida Politics" (University of Florida, 1949). Deal interviewed Knott and emphasized many points covered in this account. This is, however, the most complete and authoritative account yet published of the infamous "Sturkie Resolution" which played a critical role in the campaign. The manuscript is also a most complete revelation of Knott’s critique of the "Bryan Primary …

Spanish Fisheries Of Charlotte Harbor, E. A. Hammond Nov 2021

Spanish Fisheries Of Charlotte Harbor, E. A. Hammond

Florida Historical Quarterly

The fishermen from Cuba and other Spanish colonial settlements who had first sailed their smacks into the waters of Charlotte Harbor and Tampa Bay recognized that the bays, inlets, and rivers of the area abounded in edible fish and green turtle ready to be taken with minimal risk and perhaps even with substantial profit. The organic content of these waters provided ideal feeding haunts for many species for which there would be convenient markets. It may be reasonably assumed that commercial fishing, at least on a small scale, was carried on there in the latter part of the seventeenth and …

Pelts, Plumes, And Hides: White Traders Among The Seminole Indians, 1890-1930, Harry A. Kersey, Jr. Nov 2021

Pelts, Plumes, And Hides: White Traders Among The Seminole Indians, 1890-1930, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Only a handful of Indians remained in Florida as the Third Seminole War ended in 1858. When Chief Billy Bowlegs led his band out of the Big Cypress Swamp, accepted a government indemnity, and boarded the steamer Grey Cloud which would take him and his group to their new home in the Indian Territory, he estimated that only thirty-eight warriors and their families were left behind. This was probably a low figure, but his information was relayed to the war department by Colonel Elias Rector, Superintendent of Indian Affairs, and plans were made to locate the remaining bands. Throughout that …

Booker T. Washington's Florida Incident, 1903-1904, Arthur O. White Nov 2021

Booker T. Washington's Florida Incident, 1903-1904, Arthur O. White

Florida Historical Quarterly

"Come without fail. You will receive kindly and friendly welcome. Address to be given in courthouse to both races." This telegram of February 4, 1903, reinvited Booker T. Washington, America’s best known black man, to speak on the occasion of the joint meeting of the General Education Board and county superintendents of education at Gainesville, Florida. It was front page news throughout the United States. Washington's acceptance of an earlier invitation from State Superintendent of Education William N. Sheats, one of the South's most renowned educators, had caused intense controversy among Floridians over the idea of a black man, however …

Florida's Image In Juvenile Fiction, 1909-1914, Peter A. Soderbergh Nov 2021

Florida's Image In Juvenile Fiction, 1909-1914, Peter A. Soderbergh

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the years between Appomattox and Sarajevo many young readers took their leisure pleasures from the pages of hardbacked novelettes. More respectable, to parents at least, than the "dime novel," the novellas exploded with the heady escapades of fictional boys and girls whose mental and physical reserves were unlimited. Descended from earlier models created by Martha Finley and William T. Adams— and rooted in the "success" ethos popularized by Horatio Alger, Jr.— the series published after 1898 outdid their prototypes in every aspect but quality.

Covid-19 And Tourism: Analyzing The Effects Of Covid-19 Statistics And Media Coverage On Attitudes Toward Tourism, Maksim Godovykh, Jorge Ridderstaat, Carissa Baker, Alan Fyall

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

COVID-19 has significantly influenced tourism, including tourists’ and residents’ attitudes toward tourism. At the same time, attitudes and consumer confidence are important for economic recovery in the tourism sector. This study explores the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on people’s attitudes toward tourism by analyzing time-series data on the number of COVID-19 positive cases, vaccinations, news sentiment, a total number of daily mentions of tourism, and the share of voice for positive and negative sentiment toward tourism. The applied data analysis techniques include descriptive analysis, visual representation of data, data decomposition into trend and cycle components, unit root tests, Granger …
