Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research report reviews the basics of pulse code modulation (PCM) techniques and includes a special encoder design for a system which uses a laser diode output for the transmitted pulse. The text discusses PCM and its features, PCM formats, synchronization, and various accepted PCM codes. The encode circuit design is complete with a description of the circuit, circuit components, and operation. Included are the necessary diagrams, figures, specifications, and parts list. The transmitted output of the design circuit has a repetition rate of one megabit per second.

A Proximity Vehicle Locator System, Bradley Everett Thompson Jan 1974

A Proximity Vehicle Locator System, Bradley Everett Thompson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the design, construction and operation of the proximity vehicle locator system prototype developed for the Orlando Police Department. The objective of the project itself was to provide the O.P.D. with a simple but effective system by which constant surveillance of patrol car locations could be maintained, thus improving the department's operational efficiency. Each unit designed specifically for use in this project will be discussed in some detail, while those purchased locally for use in the project will be only briefly described, as pertaining to their functional importance to the system. In addition, …

Development Of A Remote Sound Monitoring System, Joseph Owen Ellis Jan 1974

Development Of A Remote Sound Monitoring System, Joseph Owen Ellis

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report explains the development of a sound measuring system for continuous monitoring of sound levels. Dedicated telephone lines are used for data transmission so that sound level data can be monitored at installations far from the area of concern. This allows the sound sensing equipment to be left unattended and thereby greatly reduces the manpower costs of operation. That predetermined data conditions can be detected when they occur and corrective action can be taken immediately at the data receiving installation further justifies the method used. Background information and general need for such a system are discussed. Growing public concern …

Osha's Impact On Industry, Paul Christ Noller Jan 1974

Osha's Impact On Industry, Paul Christ Noller

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

On December 29, 1970, the President signed into law the Williams-Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970, which became effective April 28, 1971. The purpose of this act is to assure safe and healthful working conditions for the nation's wage earners. The law provides that each employer has the basic duty to furnish his employees a place of employment which is safe from recognized hazards that cause death or serious physical harm. The implementation of the OSHA Act has been the most extensive intervention into the day-to-day operation of American Industry in history. Originally, employers expressed doubt that …

An Application Of Hamilton's Principle To Diffraction Of Light By Ultrasound, Daniel F. Waterhouse Jan 1974

An Application Of Hamilton's Principle To Diffraction Of Light By Ultrasound, Daniel F. Waterhouse

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A covariant form of Hamilton's Principle of Stationary Action is formulated and used to solve the general eiconal equation describing the wave function of light in a medium carrying ultrasound. Tensor notation is reviewed and the tensor form of Maxwell's equations is developed. Boundary equation that the field quantities must satisfy in order for the variation of Hamilton's action integral to be stationary are determined and used to form the generalized eiconal equation of geometrical optics. The rays are introduced and through a canonical transformation the eiconal for the diffracted medium is solved and plotted.

Reduced Third Order Intermodulation Distortion Utilizing A Push-Pull Class C Vhf Transistorized Amplifier, Norman B. Mosher Jan 1974

Reduced Third Order Intermodulation Distortion Utilizing A Push-Pull Class C Vhf Transistorized Amplifier, Norman B. Mosher

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In a transistorized push-pull amplifier, third order intermodulation distortion was effectively reduced at VHF frequencies with an output power of two watt. The non-linear distortion of the amplifier is modeled using a power series. The resulting expression is used as the basis for choosing the push-pull configuration to reduce the third order intermodulation distortion. The amplifier was built and tested, and the experimental results compare favorably with the theoretical results. The level of the third order intermodulation distortion is found to be at least 30 dB below the interfering signal level.

A Special Purpose Modem Design, William Lester Schulte Jan 1974

A Special Purpose Modem Design, William Lester Schulte

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A special purpose modem has been designed to fill the interface requirements peculiar to RCA's DatawayTmk hotel/motel data management system. The modem interface operates on dedicated telephone quality wiring over distances up to 4000 feet using frequency shift keying. A data rate of 2880 bits per second is achieved through the interface. This report discussed the requirements of the interface and details the worst case design of the modem transmitter and receiver sections. The approach used relies heavily upon the use of digital logic circuitry in the modulation and demodulation of the FSK signals.
