The Outsiders: Women In The Academy, Michele T. Myers Oct 1984

The Outsiders: Women In The Academy, Michele T. Myers

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Women’s status in higher education is examined through legal, institutional, and statistical changes following major equity legislation of the early 1970s. The article acknowledges gains in women’s access to higher education, women’s studies programs, professional networks, and administrative development, while emphasizing persistent disparities in employment, rank, tenure, salary, and promotion. Drawing on reports from the Women’s Equity Action League, the American Association of University Professors, and a National Research Council study of matched male and female Ph.D.s, the article presents evidence that women remain concentrated in lower academic ranks, earn less than men, and advance more slowly toward tenure and …

Matrix Design: An Alternative Model For Organizing The School Or Department, Philip J. Salem, Robert D. Gratz

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Matrix design is presented as an alternative organizational model for schools and departments of communication facing competition, complex curricular demands, limited resources, and pressures for accountability. The article contrasts traditional bureaucratic structures with matrix structures, in which faculty or staff may report simultaneously to program managers and functional managers. It explains how this model can clarify authority, improve coordination, and support both continuity and innovation across areas such as undergraduate education, graduate education, research, public service, advisement, theatre production, and communication program administration. Examples include a comprehensive speech communication department and a university theatre production program, both of which require …

The Beginning, Intermediate, And Advanced Study Of Interpersonal Communication, Paul G. Friedman

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

A framework for sequencing interpersonal communication coursework is proposed through a producer, marketer, and consumer metaphor. Developed after a review of interpersonal communication offerings at the University of Kansas, the article distinguishes among introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels of study. Beginning students are described as consumers who learn established knowledge and apply interpersonal communication concepts and skills to personal and professional contexts. Intermediate students are positioned as marketers who synthesize existing research, study primary sources, develop greater skill proficiency, and apply knowledge in more complex settings such as simulations, internships, teaching, or case analysis. Advanced students are presented as producers …

The Concept Of Community For People Working In A Theatre Program Of Limited Size, Margaret M. Swanson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

A small university theatre program is examined through its relationship to the surrounding community, campus, and prospective students. The article reflects on how theatre programs in small towns may function as bridges between university and local audiences while also becoming accountable to community expectations, traditions, and tastes. Examples include a long-running summer stock company, an annual student production of A Christmas Carol, touring theatre for high school audiences, and plans for a high school arts camp. These programs are described as forms of outreach, recruitment, public service, and experiential learning, but also as sources of financial strain, artistic constraint, and …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines a merit pay model for academic departments designed to reduce anxiety, competition, and perceived unfairness in faculty salary adjustment processes. It describes a three tier system that combines a general salary increase with differentiated merit awards for faculty ranked in upper, middle, and lower performance groups. The article addresses how departments may define valued faculty activity through explicit criteria for teaching, research, publication, and service, while also preserving attention to equity, rank, and length of service. It presents the model as a way to reward exceptional contributions without denying recognition to competent faculty members. The article situates …

Communication Climate And Administrative Burnout: A Technique For Relieving Some Of The Pressures, Elliott Pood, John Lee Jellicorse

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Communication climate auditing is presented as a practical method for identifying and reducing administrative pressures that may contribute to burnout in academic departments. The article explains a two phase process involving a communication audit instrument followed by small group discussions focused on solutions. It describes how audit results can reveal communication strengths, problem areas, perceptual differences between department members and administrators, and unclear lines of responsibility. The article also evaluates limitations of audit procedures developed for business settings, recommending clearer academic language, attention to multiple administrative levels, interviews, and outside audit teams. By connecting communication climate to administrative stress, shared …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Chairperson burnout is examined as a problem created by role ambiguity, high administrative expectations, limited authority, and reduced access to rewarding faculty activities. The article describes the academic chairperson as positioned between faculty and administration, expected to manage faculty concerns, departmental coordination, research support, instruction, records, personnel, and institutional paperwork without the full power often needed to enforce decisions. It connects these conditions to stress, declining morale, and reduced administrative effectiveness. The article also considers whether continued research productivity may help chairpersons preserve a faculty identity and resist burnout. By linking administrative strain to productivity, role conflict, and professional recognition, …
