Writing As A Public Relations Task: How Much Do Public Relations Practitioners Write?, Frank R. Stansberry

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate how much public relations people write in the course of their work; to determine if the amount and type of writing varies with experience, job type or employer; and to investigate what other tasks besides writing public relations professionals do. The sample was 198 members of the Public Relations Society of America who responded to a nation-wide mailing of 500 people selected from the Society's membership directory. Results showed that public relations practitioners spent 36.5 percent of their time writing. Overall, public relations people spend more time on publicity, media relations, and …

Auto-Ionizing Resonances 4d- Nl In Cadmium, J. Jiménez-Mier, C. D. Caldwell, M. O. Krause Jan 1989

Auto-Ionizing Resonances 4d- Nl In Cadmium, J. Jiménez-Mier, C. D. Caldwell, M. O. Krause

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

We measured the relative cross section and angular distribution parameter for 5s photoelectron emission in atomic cadmium across the region of the 4d→nl autoionizing resonances between 11.70 and 18.05 eV. Our results for the oscillator strengths agree with Hartree-Fock calculations, and are higher than the values reported by other experiments. Strong departure from the direct-process value of 2.0 was observed for the angular distribution parameter β, indicating singlet-to-triplet mixing in the wave functions. The mixing varies in the np resonance series, while it remains almost constant throughout the nf series. In the region of the 5p resonances …

Threshold Behavior Of The M-Shell Photoionization Of Argon, H. P. Saha Jan 1989

Threshold Behavior Of The M-Shell Photoionization Of Argon, H. P. Saha

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

The multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method, which has been extended to study photoionization of atoms, is applied to calculate the 3s→kp photoionization cross section of argon. It has been shown that the interchannel interaction associated with the 3p→kd transition, which is very strong in the 3s subshell photoionization cross section, can be very efficiently simulated by the bound-continuum channel interaction associated with the 3p→3d transition. The length and velocity forms of cross section agree very well throughout the range of energies considered. Our results compare well with other theoretical estimates and are in better agreement with experimental measurements.

Low-Energy Elastic-Scattering Of Electrons From Neon Atoms, H. P. Saha Jan 1989

Low-Energy Elastic-Scattering Of Electrons From Neon Atoms, H. P. Saha

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

The multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method of Saha, Pindzola, and Compton [Phys. Rev. A 38, 128 (1988)] applied to photoionization of atoms has been extended in order to consider elastic scattering of electrons from neon atoms. The dynamical polarization and the electron-correlation effects, which are very important in this case, have been taken into account more accurately in the ab initio method through the configuration-interaction procedure. Phase shifts, and differential, integral, and momentum-transfer cross sections for electrons elastically scattered from neon atoms are reported for the impact-energy range from 0.136 to 70 eV. The calculated results are compared with experimental and …

Reconstruction Of Transform-Coded Images By Entropy Methods, Nicolaos S. Tzannes, Michael A. Tzannes, John Bodenschatz Ii Jan 1989

Reconstruction Of Transform-Coded Images By Entropy Methods, Nicolaos S. Tzannes, Michael A. Tzannes, John Bodenschatz Ii

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

A new, universal approach to reconstructing transform-coded images is proposed. The method views the images as a probability mass function (pmf), allowing the retained coefficients of a transform (Karhunen-Loeve, discrete cosine, slant, etc.) to be thought of as averages of the basis functions over the pmf. This sets the stage for reconstructing the original images by using the maximum entropy principle (MEP) and the minimum relative entropy principle (MREP) with the retained coefficients as constraints in the extremizations. A formulation combining the two methods is also proposed, resulting in a reconstruction algorithm that is fast, proceeding in an iterative way …

Design Of Nonpolarizing Achromatic Beam-Splitters With Dielectric Multilayer Coatings, Muamer Zukic, Karl H. Guenther Jan 1989

Design Of Nonpolarizing Achromatic Beam-Splitters With Dielectric Multilayer Coatings, Muamer Zukic, Karl H. Guenther

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

Optical beamsplitters often consist of repeated pairs of high and low index quarter-wave layers. At oblique angles of incidence, such coatings typically have a fairly high polarization ratio. Reflectance, transmittance, and phase for the two orthogonal planes of polarization, s and p, are different in general. Here, we present the results of the design of all-dielectric beamsplitter coatings with very low polarization ratios. An initial sinusoidal refractive index profile, optimized with a refining computer program, yields a 50±1% beamsplitter in the 450 to 650 nm wavelength range, with less than 0.5% (abs.) difference between the s and p reflectance in …

Research Grants And Their Role In Promotion And Tenure, Bert E. Bradley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article investigates faculty attitudes toward the role of research grants in promotion and tenure decisions. A survey of tenured professors in a liberal arts college was conducted to assess whether grants should substitute for, supplement, or carry equal weight with publications. Results show that most faculty opposed substituting grants for publications or basing promotion solely on grants. Respondents emphasized that grants are a means to enable research rather than an end in themselves, and that scholarly publications remain the primary indicator of academic contribution. Some faculty supported partial credit for grants when they resulted in publications or significant research …

Top Published Authors In Communication Studies 1915--1985, Nancy F. Burroughs, Diane Christophel, J. Cole Ady, Elizabeth A. Mcgreal

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article presents a historical analysis of publication productivity in communication studies between 1915 and 1985. Using the Index to Journals in Communication Studies Through 1985, the study identifies the top published authors in the field and examines patterns of scholarly output across seventy-one years. Results reveal that fewer than one percent of authors produced a disproportionately large share of publications, with the top group contributing nearly fourteen percent of all articles. The analysis highlights gender disparities, noting only a small number of women among the most prolific authors, while also documenting shifts in doctoral training institutions over time. The …

Evaluating Grant In The Promotion And Tenure Process: The Perspective Of A Faculty Member, David Appleby Jan 1989

Evaluating Grant In The Promotion And Tenure Process: The Perspective Of A Faculty Member, David Appleby

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article critiques the growing emphasis on grant funding as a measure of faculty productivity in promotion and tenure evaluations. It describes how increasing administrative pressure to pursue grants risks narrowing definitions of scholarship, privileging fundable projects, and undervaluing significant research that may not attract external support. The discussion highlights tensions between academic values and financial imperatives, noting how reliance on funding can distort research priorities, create inequities across disciplines, and reduce attention to teaching and intellectual development. Examples illustrate the consequences of equating grantsmanship with research excellence, including a shift toward projects designed primarily for fundability. The article argues …

Evaluating Grants In The Promotion And Tenure Process: Perspectives Of A Chief Academic Officer, Elisabeth A. Zinser

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article considers the role of extramural funding in faculty evaluation and its implications for promotion and tenure. It reviews the growing diversity of funding sources, including government, corporate, and foundation support, and identifies economic, technological, and institutional pressures that have increased emphasis on external grants. The discussion acknowledges the benefits of additional resources but cautions against risks such as external influence over research agendas, restrictions on publication, and erosion of academic values. It argues that funding should not substitute for achievements in teaching or scholarship, but rather serve as evidence of professional recognition and academic citizenship. Recommendations emphasize balancing …

Grantsmanship And Tenure, Robert R. Smith Jan 1989

Grantsmanship And Tenure, Robert R. Smith

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the relationship between grant activity and faculty evaluation, focusing on its role in promotion and tenure. It situates grant-seeking within the historical adaptability of universities, noting that institutions have long balanced financial necessity with the preservation of academic values. The discussion emphasizes that while universities increasingly pursue external support, traditional measures of achievement such as publications and creative work remain central to long-term advancement. Grants are portrayed as useful when they facilitate research, teaching, or creative activity, but limited in value if disconnected from scholarly outcomes. Disciplinary differences are highlighted, with sciences relying heavily on funding to …
