Newley Discovered Documents (May-August 1898) Of An American Volunteer Cavalry's Cuban Incursion And The Battle Of Tayacoba (Cuba) In The Spanish-American War, Paul Michael Taylor
Florida Historical Quarterly
This article presents the handwritten correspondence and transcriptions of nine previously unpublished letters to his family by William Louis Abbott (1860-1936), written from May to August of 1898 during his time as a volunteer in the exclusive "irregular" cavalry of volunteers who assembled in Tampa to battle the Spanish during the Spanish-American War. These letters comprise a substantive addition to the corpus of primary data on key historical figures in this Tampa-based effort to aid the Cuban insurgency as part of the Spanish-American War, and also contain first-hand accounts of conditions at Tampa, Florida, where U.S. military soldiers and irregular …
Remembering An Indigenous South: Regional Identity, Vero Beach, And Settler Tourism, Kristalyn Marie Shefveland
Remembering An Indigenous South: Regional Identity, Vero Beach, And Settler Tourism, Kristalyn Marie Shefveland
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the early twentieth century, city boosters in Vero Beach concocted a mythical tale of its founding that reimagined the region as devoid of Indigenous inhabitants, recently inhabited, dripping with colonial Spanish lore, and otherwise thoroughly transformed by the arrival of white European settlers. Town planners, promoters, and historical societies collectively sold the community with simple stories that obfuscate Vero's, and Florida's, more complex and inclusive history. Despite the presence of Seminoles in the region and extensive physical evidence for the region's long history of Indigenous occupation, the Indian River Farms Company and city boosters Herman J. Zeuch, Waldo Sexton, …
Charting A Path Toward An Indigenous History Of Florida, Denise I. Bossy
Charting A Path Toward An Indigenous History Of Florida, Denise I. Bossy
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1743, with the naive belief that the Calusas were finally interested in Catholic conversion, two Jesuit missionaries traveled to South Florida from Havana, Cuba. For decades Europeans described the region-in documents and on maps-as all but devoid of human life and, in particular, its Indigenous populations as being virtually extinct. Instead, the Jesuits discovered that South Florida was very much still under Indigenous control. A number of distinct Native confederacies-including one that consisted of Calusas, Bocarratons, and "Key" Indians and another of what one Spaniard called Maymies, Santaluzos, and Mayacas-exerted not only territorial control but also control over the …

Amateur Minstrel Shows And Blackface Amusements At The University Of Florida In The Jim Crow Era, Myles Sullivan
Amateur Minstrel Shows And Blackface Amusements At The University Of Florida In The Jim Crow Era, Myles Sullivan
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the spring of 1914, the University of Florida's (UF) studentrun newspaper, The Florida Alligator, heralded "one of the biggest attractions of the spring season" with the front page headline "Heah Dey Kum! Dat Minstrel Show." As a theatrical performance style that had gained widespread popularity in the United States in the early 1800s, minstrel shows were often delivered with this imagined faux speech of rural African Americans. Its defining feature was culturally deemed white individuals "blacking up" their faces with burnt cork in visually cued racial caricatures acted out in music, song, and dance. Indeed, when subsequently reviewing the …

The Christmas season is associated with the creation of many lists such as gifts, groceries and holiday cards. But there is another list citizen scientists assemble this time of year as well. The National Audubon Society (NAS) Christmas Bird Count (CBC), originally established to counter what had turned into an annual Christmas day bird slaughter, began in 1900 and look place at 25 different sites, primarily in the northeast United States although California and the Midwest were also represented.

John Grattan Gamble's Mother And Sisters: Antebellum Aristrocrats And Their Flight From Successful Women, John T. Foster
Florida Historical Quarterly
There were prominent women in Antebellum Richmond whose lives resemble women of today. Catherine Grattan Gamble and her daughter, Elizabeth Gamble Wirt, participated in their husbands' careers and sought places of equality with their spouses long before such behavior became common. Their lives are a dramatic departure from images of the Old South and the heritage claimed by relatives who became prominent in Middle Florida.

Rethinking Events Over Thirty Years Of Research, Michael B. Duignan
Rethinking Events Over Thirty Years Of Research, Michael B. Duignan
Rosen Research Review
Events are often pitched as business opportunities for the tourism and hospitality sector, but look deeper, and a far more compelling narrative emerges. In examining thirty years of events-related research, Dr. Michael Duignan of UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management has uncovered a highly complex and emerging field of study with significant value for the sector. It is also attracting the eye of researchers from other disciplines looking for insights into why people are drawn to share experiences.
What Fishing Tackle Should I Bring Today?: Safety Harbor Resource Collection Tools As Adaptations To Aquatic Environments, Richard J. Davis Iii
What Fishing Tackle Should I Bring Today?: Safety Harbor Resource Collection Tools As Adaptations To Aquatic Environments, Richard J. Davis Iii
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
This thesis reports on the results of research conducted to determine whether technological adaptations to local environmental conditions can be observed through geospatial and artifact analysis of Safety Harbor collections from the Tampa Bay region of Florida. Past artifact and spatial analysis did not take advantage of modern technological advancements when studying how human-environmental interactions can influence certain adaptations to local conditions. In this project, GIS was used to reconstruct local aquatic environmental conditions of waterways adjacent to Safety Harbor sites. New statistical software programs have also proven themselves useful to archaeologists seeking to conduct hypothesis testing of artifact data. …
Work Motivation And Occupational Attitudes: An Application Of Self-Determination Theory Among Rangers, Richard L. Elligson Jr
Work Motivation And Occupational Attitudes: An Application Of Self-Determination Theory Among Rangers, Richard L. Elligson Jr
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Job attitudes of rangers play a key role in the implementation and effectiveness of conservation initiatives. As such, scholars have begun to examine the attitudes rangers hold towards their role, organization, and external working environment. However, little is known about work motivation among rangers. Work motivation is a key predictor of employee performance, job attitudes, and well-being. The relationship between work motivation and ranger occupational attitudes may offer insight that conservation agencies can leverage to improve positive job attitudes. Guided by self-determination theory and the criminal justice literature, this study examines the relationship between ranger work motivation and attitudes towards …
The Color Of Disease: Race Science, Pandemic Influenza, And The Rise Of Epidemiology In The Segregated South, Andrew Kishuni
The Color Of Disease: Race Science, Pandemic Influenza, And The Rise Of Epidemiology In The Segregated South, Andrew Kishuni
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
This thesis evaluates the relationship between race science and eugenics, statistical epidemiology and Southern public health thought, African American health, and the 1918-1920 influenza pandemic. Historians have neglected the flu as an important epidemiological event in Southern history and historiography. To demonstrate the significance of the flu, this thesis makes several arguments based on research from new qualitative and quantitative evidence. The chief argument is that African Americans suffered disproportionately compared to whites in the South, challenging the consensus that the flu affected both races equally. Segregation did not protect African Americans from the flu. In some cases, African Americans …

Findings are primarily grounded in qualitative information derived from interviews, participant observation, and photovoice. Data were collected both prior to the global COVID-19 outbreak and over subsequent months of lockdown and public health mitigation measures. Primarily focusing on local community garden organizers, community garden …
Understanding Health-Seeking Decision-Making Process And Behavior Among Haitian Immigrants: A Grounded Theory Approach, Shelleta Ladonice
Understanding Health-Seeking Decision-Making Process And Behavior Among Haitian Immigrants: A Grounded Theory Approach, Shelleta Ladonice
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Black people in the U.S. die at younger ages, have significantly higher rates of death from treatable medical conditions, are more likely to have late-stage breast and colon cancer diagnoses and more likely to die from these cancers, and are at higher risk for chronic illnesses compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Accessing healthcare is crucial to health and well-being; however, U.S. immigrants' use of healthcare services is far less than native-born Americans. Haitian immigrants experience health disparities at the highest rate compared to other Black immigrants in the U.S. Given their unique history, culture, and immigration experience, it …
Evaluating Sexual Dimorphism In Occipital Morphological Shape Through Modern Human Ontogenetic Changes, Jennifer S. Barritt
Evaluating Sexual Dimorphism In Occipital Morphological Shape Through Modern Human Ontogenetic Changes, Jennifer S. Barritt
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Sex estimation is vital to building the biological profile in forensic anthropology. Cranial nonmetric traits are often used in adult sex estimation due to their sexually dimorphic nature. However, only one nonmetric trait is assessed on the occipital despite the bone’s postmortem durability. While these sex estimation methods were developed for use on adult crania, juvenile sex estimation is less accurate due to differences in the age at which individuals reach sexual maturity. The aim of this study was to improve upon existing sex estimation methods by accounting for shape differences that exist within the occipital. This study used computed …

Industrial Safety: How Complacency At Industrial Facilities Has Evolved As A Result Of Widespread Corporate Leadership Induced Reductions In Force Of Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers, Christina Kniffin-Downs
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
With the renewal of interest in nuclear energy as a green energy source, battery plant manufacturing for electric vehicles, and semiconductor fabrication plant construction, it is necessary to address the evolution of complacency as it relates to industrial facility leadership and the widespread reduction in force of essential critical infrastructure workers. As a skilled craft person in the piping trades, with almost two decades of experience in mechanical construction, ten of those years as a nuclear worker, and as a traveling pipefitter working at chemical, refinery, and gasification plants, I am intimately aware of the behaviors, practices, and procedures inherent …
Jewish Women's Reproductive Health Traditions From The Perspective Of Midwives In The United States, Haley Juroviesky
Jewish Women's Reproductive Health Traditions From The Perspective Of Midwives In The United States, Haley Juroviesky
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This research study examines Jewish women’s traditions from the perspective of midwives, in the United States (US), particularly midwives in Florida and New York, based on their work caring for women of childbearing age in the Hasidic Ashkenazi and Sephardic Orthodox communities. The reproductive traditions examined in this research may be practiced differently depending on a woman’s degree of religiosity and the rabbinic authorities in their communities. The primary data I collected in this study are based on ethnographic methods, including participant-observation with midwives, and semi-structured interviews with midwives and rebbetzins. The secondary data draws on my analysis of the …
Comparative Analysis Of Metric And Non-Metric Ancestry Estimation Methods Of Maya Individuals, Griffon G. Binkowski, Channing Cook
Comparative Analysis Of Metric And Non-Metric Ancestry Estimation Methods Of Maya Individuals, Griffon G. Binkowski, Channing Cook
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024
Ancestry estimation finds its place in many fields of anthropology, including biological anthropology, osteoarchaeology, and paleopathology. A biological profile creates a framework for identity; with ancestry, it can aid researchers in determining the population group an individual is most genetically affiliated with. The heritability of dental traits makes teeth useful in estimating affinity. Ancestry estimation statistical programs using dentition, however, were originally developed upon limited and well- preserved databases, so archaeological Indigenous individuals are often grouped incorrectly as East Asian due to shared genetic traits. By using RStudio for anthropological statistical analysis, we aim to test the preservation bias and …

This research uses LiDAR data and GIS analyses to identify looting clusters, comparing areas within the park to those outside, and investigates the relationship between looting activity and infrastructure such as trails, camps, and fresh water reservoirs.
Findings reveal that looting is more concentrated outside …
The Influence Of Natural And Anthropogenic Drivers On Estuarine Food Webs At Various Spatio-Temporal Scales And Levels Of Complexity, Michelle Shaffer
The Influence Of Natural And Anthropogenic Drivers On Estuarine Food Webs At Various Spatio-Temporal Scales And Levels Of Complexity, Michelle Shaffer
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Global coastal ecosystems support human life by providing critical services like food, water purification, and coastal protection, yet these ecosystems are among the most threatened due to natural and human-driven disturbances. The long-term maintenance and restoration of these ecosystems is a complex challenge for resource managers due to the wide range of factors affecting these ecosystems ecological condition over long timespans. Most studies in marine ecology evaluate ecosystem change over relatively short temporal scales (ago), often resulting in shifting baseline syndrome. To effectively manage and restore these ecosystems, resource managers must consider long-term ecosystem baselines.

Past And Present Communities Of Pottery Practice In Guatemala, Karla J. Cardona
Past And Present Communities Of Pottery Practice In Guatemala, Karla J. Cardona
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This research aims to identify pottery technological traits and attributes that suggest the presence of communities of pottery practice in archaeological contexts. Through the combination of ethnoarchaeological approach and archaeological ceramic analysis of vessels produced in present communities, we can identify communities of pottery practice in the past. The data obtained using diverse ethnographic methods and multiple archaeological analyses are relevant to archaeologists, as they allow the study of the organization of production in the absence of manufacturing contexts within the archaeological record. At the same time, as contemporary pottery-making practice is becoming scarcer in Guatemala it is relevant to …

Ritual Change And Sociopolitical Transformations At The Maya Center Of Pacbitun, Belize: Intra-Polity Interactions Between Epicenter And Periphery, George J. Micheletti
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation examines how peripheral communities at the ancient Maya site of Pacbitun, Belize, exercise agency through their ritual practices from the Middle Preclassic to the Late Classic periods. By focusing on public, semi-public, and private/domestic contexts, this study investigates how these peripheral households engaged with, maintained, or diverged from the elite ideologies emerging in the epicenter. Through a diachronic analysis of architecture and ritual deposits, particularly burials, this research traces the evolving interactions between the periphery and the epicenter across five major sociopolitical transformations. Fieldwork involved targeted excavations at select peripheral households and public ceremonial groups, supplemented by ceramic …

Crusading For Fun And Profit: An Examination Of Ludohistorical Mode In The Crusader Kings Community, Kirk M. Lundblade
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
How do participants in communities of play centered around digital games engage with history? The historiographic influences of ludic form have been closely scrutinized in recent years, but little attention has been paid to the digital cultures—to the communities of play— which center the discussion and play of these historical games. My study aimed to closely examine one such community centered around the grand strategy game Crusader Kings III, released by Paradox Interactive in 2020. I use discourse analysis together with grounded theory to examine the game Crusader Kings III alongside two primary sites found on reddit and Paradox …
