Weapons, Strategies, And Tactics Of The Europeans And The Indians In Sixteenth- And Seventeenth-Century Florida, Barbara A. Purdy
Weapons, Strategies, And Tactics Of The Europeans And The Indians In Sixteenth- And Seventeenth-Century Florida, Barbara A. Purdy
Florida Historical Quarterly
The Indians of Florida were hostile to white explorers, adventurers, colonists, and missionaries from the time of Ponce de León’s encounter in 1513 until 1710 when it was reported, “there remains not now so much as one Village with ten Houses in it, in all Florida, that is subject to the Spaniards.“ These were the Apalachee and Timucua Indians of northwest and central Florida, but it is known that the Tocobago Indians had been destroyed by 1709. The Ais, never many in number, seem to have disappeared sometime during the first half of the eighteenth century, and the Tekesta were …
Clan Affiliation And Leadership Among The Twentieth-Century Florida Indians, R. T. King
Clan Affiliation And Leadership Among The Twentieth-Century Florida Indians, R. T. King
Florida Historical Quarterly
As late at the 1950s, the Florida Seminoles were among the least acculturated of North American Indians. Three nineteenth-century wars with the United States had ended in defeat for the Seminoles, shattering their political structure and forcing the removal of the great majority of their people to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi. The remnant bands had dispersed into the uninhabited reaches of South Florida, where, largely left to their own devices, they continued to lead a life based on hunting, gathering, and swidden (cut and burn) agriculture. They were not able to resume their rather sophisticated pre-war political structure, …

"Clothes Make Men": Clothing And The Embodiment Of Gender In Virginia, 1750-1775, Rhiannon O'Neil
"Clothes Make Men": Clothing And The Embodiment Of Gender In Virginia, 1750-1775, Rhiannon O'Neil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This study explores how late colonial Virginians used clothing to control, enforce, and negotiate gender. Gender, both as a system of power and as a category of social identity, became linked with the material forms of clothing that Virginians wore in their everyday lives. The identification of clothing with the body enabled Virginians to actively make choices about how to perform themselves to the wider culture of observation and perception present in the colony. Dress was ubiquitous, but its meanings were variable, changing, and unstable. In eighteenth-century Virginia, Anglo-descended colonists imported ideals from Britain, which then produced Chesapeake-specific gender relationships, …
Using Lidar To Locate Indigenous Mound Structures Along The St. Johns River In The Ocala National Forest, Taylor Collore
Using Lidar To Locate Indigenous Mound Structures Along The St. Johns River In The Ocala National Forest, Taylor Collore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The Indigenous people of Florida terraformed the region's relatively flat landscape into monumental vantage points for residence, burial, and displays of regional power. Known as mound structures today, these long-abandoned sites are now obscured by dense vegetation and thick tree canopies making their rediscovery difficult. Using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology these lost sites can be located remotely for protection and study. In this research, LiDAR is used to locate Indigenous mound sites along the St. Johns River within the Ocala National Forest. Using free an open source geographic information systems (GIS) and similar software, LiDAR point cloud data …
Communities Of Play And Practice: Collaborating With Audiences And Coworkers In Performative Online Spaces, Paul Oppold
Communities Of Play And Practice: Collaborating With Audiences And Coworkers In Performative Online Spaces, Paul Oppold
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This study describes an ethnographic investigation of Communities of Play within Communities of Practice. As professional 'content creators', whose 'work' is 'play', are increasingly interacting with non-professional content consumers, whose 'play' is a kind of 'work', the barriers between 'work' and 'play' are increasingly dissolving. The purpose of this study was to examine the nature and frequency of the professionals' interactions with coworkers in an office and with the content consumers while working from home. Data were collected in the form of gameplay videos uploaded by the professional streamers from January of 2017 to March of 2018, downloaded by the …
An Exploration Of The Impact Of Student Employment And Retention: A Correlational Analysis, Noreen Lewis
An Exploration Of The Impact Of Student Employment And Retention: A Correlational Analysis, Noreen Lewis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
"With so many students working, and such large numbers devoting a considerable amount of time to one or more jobs, work is – after going to class- the most common activity in which undergraduates engage" (Kuh, 2018, p. ix). An under-researched factor to investigate why students retain, is participation in an on-campus student employment program. The purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between a student's participation in student employment and if the student retains from their first to second year. Understanding this relationship can provide an opportunity to create positive impact for both the student and institution …

Professional Development In Florida College System Institutions, Elizabeth Terranova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This is a phenomenological study focused on a small, suburban Florida College System institution that has implemented a three-year induction program for new faculty, as part of its professional development program. It is related to retention of new faculty through the first five years. This study was undertaken to define and exemplify professional development and how it is utilized by practitioners. Secondly, it outlines induction programs and what works best to retain skilled faculty in FCS institutions. Members of several cohorts of the induction program were asked to participate in the study and were interviewed about their experiences in the …

The Case Of Tom Tiger's Horse: An Early Foray Into Indian Rights, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.
The Case Of Tom Tiger's Horse: An Early Foray Into Indian Rights, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
At a time in our national history when the American Indian’s claim to social and political justice is being vigorously pursued, and dramatically portrayed through mass media coverage of incidents such as the occupation of Alcatraz, disruption at the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, and a “Second Wounded Knee,” it might be well to consider in calmer retrospective one of those little known efforts to secure Indian rights which occurred in Florida at the turn of the century. The participants included an aggrieved Seminole headman of the Cow Creek band and his white friends who displayed an unusual zeal …
