Determining Solar Water Heating System Performance By Simulation, Muhammad Erami Jan 1982

Determining Solar Water Heating System Performance By Simulation, Muhammad Erami

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

TRNSYS (Transient Simulation) is used to simulate a solar hot water heating system. Three different collector areas, hot water demand and temperature settings are used to determine system performance under varying environmental conditions. The percent solar utilization or solar fraction and collector efficiency is found to be a function of collector area, tank temperature setting, daily hot water demand and solar radiation. Regression analysis is used to study solar fraction sensitivity to these same variables. Predictive models relating solar utilization with hot water load and collector area are obtained by fixing radiation level and tank temperature. Results are portrayed graphically

The Effect Of Ph On Methane Production From Dairy Cattle Manure, Mary G. Stafford Jan 1982

The Effect Of Ph On Methane Production From Dairy Cattle Manure, Mary G. Stafford

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effects of pH upon methane production from anaerobic digestion of dairy cattle manure were investigated. One liter digesters were maintained by daily adjustment at the following pH levels: 7.6, 7.0, 6.0, 5.5, and 5.0. After 33 weeks of incubation the working volume of the digesters was increased to 3 liters. Digesters were incubated on a rotary shaker at 37°C. Digesters were loaded at the desired volatile solids concentrations, without an inoculum, and maintained from day one by daily additions and withdrawals to achieve a 3 day retention time. After 50 weeks of operation the manure from a second dairy …

A Computer Model To Determine Location Of Stormwater Management Practices, Alan D. Zahm Jan 1982

A Computer Model To Determine Location Of Stormwater Management Practices, Alan D. Zahm

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

To optimize the placement of stormwater management systems, a Radio Shack BASIC computer program "SELECT" was written. The program selects locations for berms, detention ponds, retention ponds, and underground percolation tanks based upon minimum marginal cost (totally present value cost per pound of nutrient removed annually). Either nitrogen or phosphorus can be chosen as the selected nutrient. The selections occur until the desired percentage removal is obtained. Five output tables show the results of the selection process. The computer model was used to evaluate stormwater management locations for the Lake Tohopekaliga watershed in Florida. Input data consisting of soil types, …

Selective Removal Of Color, Toc, And Thm Precursors From A Highly Colored Recycled Magnesium Sludge Using Granular Activated Carbon, Kathleen O. Gill Oct 1981

Selective Removal Of Color, Toc, And Thm Precursors From A Highly Colored Recycled Magnesium Sludge Using Granular Activated Carbon, Kathleen O. Gill

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The study investigated the ability of granular activated carbon (F-400) to remove organic color, TOCk and THM precursors from a highly organic-laden recycled magnesium sludge without reducing the magnesium concentration. This treatment was attempted in order to render the sludge a more effective coagulant for surface water purification. Adsorption effectiveness was assessed through Freundlich isotherms and continuous-flow GAC columns, with both procedures conducted at three pH values. Color and TOC were adsorbed more effectively at lower pH values, while adsorption of THM precursors was inhibited at low pH. Magnesium was not significantly adsorbed by the carbon. The carbon treatment of …

Trihalomethane Precursor Reduction Using Magnesium Coagulation, Christianne C. Ferraro Oct 1981

Trihalomethane Precursor Reduction Using Magnesium Coagulation, Christianne C. Ferraro

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effectiveness of the magnesium coagulation process in reduction of trihalomethane (THM) precursors. The water was obtained from Lake Washington, a highly colored potable water supply which is used by the City of Melbourne, Florida. The THM concentrations in the finished water at Melbourne currently exceed the THM standard of 0.1 mg/l. For Lake Washington water, treatment varies according to seasonal changes in water quality. During the dry period, the recycle magnesium does not perform effectively as a coagulant for THM precursor removal. This is because of the high levels of magnesium in the late water at …

Crying And Child Abuse: A Survey Of Response To Infant Cry-Signals, Robert E. Wright Oct 1981

Crying And Child Abuse: A Survey Of Response To Infant Cry-Signals, Robert E. Wright

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

We compared the ability of several groups of women to distinguish infant cry-signals. The cry-signals were taped reproductions of the Wasz-Hockert et al., (1964) study. Subjects were mothers and non-mother practical nursing students and mothers known to have battered their children. The results supported previous findings on ability to recognize cry-signals by mothers and non-mothers. The findings were not supportive of our primary hypothesis to determine if abusive mothers were less likely to correctly identify infant cry-signals than non-abusive mothers.

Movements And Feeding Ecology Of Immature Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Mary T. Mendonca Oct 1981

Movements And Feeding Ecology Of Immature Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Mary T. Mendonca

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The seasonal and diel movements of fourteen immature green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Mosquito, Lagoon, Florida were monitored using sonic telemetry. The feeding ecology of this turtle population was also studied using dissection and stomach flushing techniques. An attempt was made to relate the movement patterns of the turtles to their feeding habits. The immature green turtles were found to make seemingly random, long distance movements (X╠äkm moved/day=7.79) and to remain in deeper waters (X╠ädepth=1.63m), apparently not feeding, when water temperatures fell below 19┬░C. When average water temperatures ranged between 19-25┬░C, the turtles were found primarily in shallow waters (X╠ädepth=1.1m) …
