The Path Of Peace: Non-Violent Methods Of Play In Indie Video Game History, Ryu R. Yamamoto
The Path Of Peace: Non-Violent Methods Of Play In Indie Video Game History, Ryu R. Yamamoto
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This research project investigates the cultural and historical significance of independently published Japanese bullet-hell/danmaku games from the 2000s and 2010s. This project highlights gaps in current game histories, particularly surrounding the influence of these games on heralded contemporary titles like Undertale (2015). The significance of independently published “doujin” Japanese digital media, notably the Touhou Project series, is often overlooked in American game studies contexts. Examining these underexplored games aims to enrich the understanding of cultural-historical games research, particularly in positioning lesser-known and lower-budget games, and contribute to the broader discourse on cross-cultural interactions within the gaming community. Comparative analyses of …
A Forgotten Kairos: Rhetorical Memory In 16th Century Europe, Phillip Martin
A Forgotten Kairos: Rhetorical Memory In 16th Century Europe, Phillip Martin
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
In 16th century Europe the nearly 2000-year-old discipline of rhetoric, still a pillar of education, underwent significant change. One of the more curious changes occurred in rhetoric’s subdivision known as memory, memoria, that is, memory’s “artificial” cultivation. During the 16th century rhetorical memory was paradoxically both maximized and marginalized as a discipline. And by the early 17th century memoria was all but extinct as a branch of rhetoric. The causal mechanisms of this transformation remain underexamined, particularly by rhetoric and composition scholars, and most explanations remain unclear and uncompelling. Accordingly, this thesis attempts a new approach …

Investigating The Role Of Selenium-Dependent Stickland Reactions In Clostridioides Difficile Bioenergetics, Dominika Dzurny
Investigating The Role Of Selenium-Dependent Stickland Reactions In Clostridioides Difficile Bioenergetics, Dominika Dzurny
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Clostridioides difficile is an anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium and one of the leading causes of antibiotic- associated diarrhea. Colonization depends on the metabolism of certain nutrients in the host gut, namely amino acids and carbohydrates. C. difficile ferments amino acids as an integral part of its metabolism via Stickland reactions, utilizing the selenoproteins D-proline reductase (Prd) and glycine reductase (Grd) to generate energy. Specificity of selenocysteine incorporation reflects the intracellular levels of selenophosphate, the activated selenium donor synthesized by selenophosphate synthetase (SelD). SelD is coincidentally a selenoprotein itself, containing a UGA codon at position 17 (Sec-17). The functional and physiological importance …

Anchored in this conceptual approach, the study draws on the taxonomy of text technology developed by Treharne and Willan, analyzing the evolution of emojis through four key dimensions: intentionality, materiality, functionality, and …
It's Been Here All Along: Increasing Discomfort In Immersive Horror Puzzle Experiences Without Jump Scares, Brittany R. Porthouse
It's Been Here All Along: Increasing Discomfort In Immersive Horror Puzzle Experiences Without Jump Scares, Brittany R. Porthouse
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This thesis seeks to utilize horror themes in a puzzle-based themed experience without the usage of jump scares. By alerting the body’s startle response once a puzzle is completed with a sudden loud noise or visuals, many horror-themed escape rooms utilize the jump scare tactic to heighten their guests’ adrenaline. While this technique is often effective in eliciting a reaction from participants, the effects are temporary– and sometimes hinder participants’ desire to fully interact with the environment. By primarily using the experience’s narrative and environment to illicit a fear response in guests, as opposed to using the consequences of their …

Analyzing The Global Changes In The Seasonal Cycle Of Sea Level, Storm Surge, And Ocean Waves, Amanda Barroso
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Changes in the seasonal cycle of extreme sea level components can modulate the flooding risk along coastlines. This dissertation evaluates the changes in and potential co-occurrence of the seasonal cycles of mean sea level, storm surge, and ocean waves. Seasonal cycles characterize the generally expected climate conditions throughout the year with distinct high and low patterns. These regular and predictable cycles have shown non-stationarity in some locations across the globe. This means the timing of the expected peak may shift to occur earlier or later. Shifts in the timing of the maximum sea level impact coastlines with increased risk of …
Morphology, Evolution And Host-Driven Convergence In Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonoidea), Davide Dal Pos
Morphology, Evolution And Host-Driven Convergence In Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonoidea), Davide Dal Pos
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Understanding the functional and evolutionary significance of morphology is fundamental to interpreting the tree of life. In recent years, emerging tools have enabled broad-scale analysis of discrete morphological data and facilitated the study of entire phenomes, helping to re-establish morphology as a central component of evolutionary research. These advances allow us not only to examine individual traits in detail but also to compare them across taxa and explore their evolutionary trajectories. This approach is particularly critical when studying hyperdiverse groups that exhibit both high levels of morphological convergence and complex life cycles intricately tied to host use. A prime example …

Chromatographic Developments For The Analysis Of Toxic Organic Chemicals In The Environment And Food Samples, Stephanie Devi Nauth
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
As awareness grows about compounds harmful to human health, the need for sensitive detection methods at low concentration levels becomes increasingly critical. Chromatography is a powerful analytical technique that enables the separation of complex mixtures, allowing for the simultaneous analysis of multiple analytes—even at trace levels. This dissertation applies chromatography in two distinct contexts: (1) Investigating the sorption of polycyclic aromatic sulfur heterocycles (PASHs) onto nylon microplastics; and (2) Detecting illegal dyes in various food matrices.
Microplastics have emerged as significant vectors for transporting pollutants into aquatic ecosystems. Due to their hydrophobic nature, many organic pollutants readily sorb onto microplastics …

Human population is increasing and will continue to do so, which means more wild habitat is altered. Even areas that are designated for preservation or conservation may still experience indirect alteration, such as anthropogenic noise and road mortality. Anthropogenic noise, or noise from people, becomes noise pollution when it disrupts an ecosystem’s functioning. The objective of this experiment was to determine the influence of road noise pollution on the abundance of reptiles and amphibians on a UCF campus wetland. Between the months of January and April of 2025, we performed basic trapping and dipnetting as well as walked transects to …

The presence and health of Florida’s coastal birds rely heavily on the integrity of oyster reefs, which house their crawling and swimming prey items. During this project, we observed bird behaviors across oyster reefs in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) via camera trap footage. The IRL is an important coastal ecosystem that preserves numerous bird species. A previous study in the IRL suggested that live oyster reefs have birds exhibiting more foraging behaviors than on dead reefs, suggesting a need to maintain connected reefs. Our work supports the research of Ph.D. candidate Tara Blanchard, whose work will inform decision-making for …

Iactor: Integrating Flow Theory And Habit Principles To Combat Decision Fatigue In Audition Management, Colby L. Bell
Iactor: Integrating Flow Theory And Habit Principles To Combat Decision Fatigue In Audition Management, Colby L. Bell
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
For many actors, the audition process can feel like a never-ending series of decisions—what to prepare, what to wear, what to bring, and how to keep track of it all. Each choice, though seemingly small, accumulates into a form of cognitive overload that can lead to burnout and disengagement. My fascination lies not only with how actors navigate this process but how we might reframe it. This thesis explores the question: How can I design a digital space that reduces decision fatigue and restores agency to actors preparing for auditions? Drawing from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow Theory, James Clear’s Atomic Habits …
