The objectives of this survey study (Appendix B of final report) has been to collect information from university, state and community college faculty and administrators and from student government leaders regarding their knowledge, awareness and opinions about open access textbooks, supplementary materials and other digital education products. The Open Access Textbook Task Force established two separate online surveys in order …
Urbanization Impacts On Campus Cypress Domes, Jennifer Bennett, Ashley Boggs, Nathan Colonna, Angela Ferebee, Bruno Kallas
Urbanization Impacts On Campus Cypress Domes, Jennifer Bennett, Ashley Boggs, Nathan Colonna, Angela Ferebee, Bruno Kallas
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Cypress domes are terrestrial freshwater ecosystems characterized by the presence of cypress trees (Taxodium spp.) growing in well-defined, dome-shaped clusters throughout the southeastern United States. These systems are one of many ecosystems in Florida facing increasing threats from human expansion and urbanization including fire suppression, logging, and hydrological alterations. This study sought to examine the impacts of urbanization on three cypress domes located on the University of Central Florida Orlando campus. To do this, we measured the defining traits, dendrochronology of Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium, and soil characteristics in each of the three selected domes. The cypress …
Impact Of Dyrk1a Haploinsufficiency On Facial Morphology Using Three-Dimensional Morphometric Analysis, Stefani Hammond
Impact Of Dyrk1a Haploinsufficiency On Facial Morphology Using Three-Dimensional Morphometric Analysis, Stefani Hammond
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Dual-specificity tyrosine-(Y)-phosphorylation regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) is a gene present on human chromosome 21. Previous research suggests that this gene plays a developmental role in facial morphology. We hypothesize that individuals with DYRK1A haploinsufficiency have altered facial morphology with potentially unique patterns of facial variation. To assess this hypothesis, we acquired three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetric facial images of individuals with and without DYRK1A haploinsufficiency, and we measured anatomical landmarks to carry out Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis (EDMA) and to evaluate global and local morphological differences. Our results show unique patterns of variation between individuals with DYRK1A haploinsufficiency and normal siblings, as …

My grandchild is a dog. She is a 1½-year-old Boston Terrier named Margo. My son tells Margo how much he loves her, that she’s his baby, that she’s the youngest in our family. He praises Margo when she’s good, admonishes her when she’s bad, sends her to timeout when she’s incorrigible. She is, in most every way, his child.

A Courting Behavioral Study On A Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus Hyacinthinus) Pair, Pamela Mulkay
A Courting Behavioral Study On A Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus Hyacinthinus) Pair, Pamela Mulkay
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
This study observes the courtship behaviors of an Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus pair in the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Sanford, Florida. A. hyacinthinus reproductive behaviors occur in four steps in the following order: Allopreening, Cloacal allopreening, Back to Back Copulation Position and finally, Copulation (Schneider 2006). Behavioral observations were taken twice a week for an average of 2 to 3 hours each day for ten weeks. The resulting data was analyzed based on the different actions, types of movement, and types of maintenance observed of the A. hyacinthinus pair. Percentages and averages were then calculated for actions relevant to …

Landscapes Of Light And Text And Layer: A Projection Poetry Performance, Jason Nelson Dr.
Landscapes Of Light And Text And Layer: A Projection Poetry Performance, Jason Nelson Dr.
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
A digital poetry performance in seven locations. This online performance mixes pre-recorded video of projection poetry in seven places/landscapes around SE Queensland, Australia with a live digital poetry reading.
The theme of this performance is landscapes of change, exploring places in SE Queensland impacted by bushfires, deviated by floods, altered by drought, damaged by weapon testing, trees thousands of years old, home of non-human creatures and the revealed geology that roads carve.
Using pico/portable projectors, digital poet Jason Nelson, will add a poetic light-based skin to these landscapes, recording the results, replaying them during the performance. As the projection videos …
Phone Down Magic On (An Augmented Reality Performance/Reading), Laura Zaylea
Phone Down Magic On (An Augmented Reality Performance/Reading), Laura Zaylea
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
Phone Down Magic On is designed as a chapter book for children, grades 3-5, and each chapter begins with augmented reality content. The story follows three young friends who text each other before bed. By holding a phone above the physical chapter book, readers see the characters’ texting session as if it were happening on their own phones… and when a parent says to put the phone down, the texting stops and the “magic” begins. The screen interface dissolves into a dream scene, and clues to a mystery are presented in floating text presented within animated sequences supported by sound …

Memorias | Electronic Literature + Live Coding Performance, Jessica A. Rodriguez Miss, Rolando Rodriguez, Alejandro Brianza, Luis M. Guzman
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
Memorias is a web-based artistic project by Jessica Rodríguez developed through the Estuary platform —an online platform to host live coding languages. It is based in six autobiographical writings connected to the way she “hears”, “writes”, “watches”, “reads”, “sees” and “listens” to the word. Through these texts, six code works were designed and programmed, hybridizing natural and computing languages by parsing three existing live coding languages: Tidal Cycles, Punctual, and CineCer0.
Together, Memorias’ languages collide different materialities as well as visual and sonic approaches, going from voices in English, Spanish, Cello and Paetzold samples, audio and visual synthesis, and pre-recorded …
Taiwanese Efl Teachers’ Perceptions And Designs Of Contextualized Vocabulary And Grammar Instruction, Chin-Wen Chien
Taiwanese Efl Teachers’ Perceptions And Designs Of Contextualized Vocabulary And Grammar Instruction, Chin-Wen Chien
Journal of English Learner Education
This case study used documents, observations, and questionnaires to explore nineteen participants’ perception and designs of contextualized vocabulary and grammar instruction. This study has the following major findings. First, although the analysis of the questionnaires revealed that participants had better perceptions in learning and teaching vocabulary in context, they struggled in designing authentic contexts during the co-planning process. Participants’ status, teaching experience, and hours of English instruction affected their perceptions. Secondly, there was a lack of coherence of tasks and clear directions on completing the tasks based on the authentic language contexts. A model on contextualized vocabulary and grammar instruction …
Supporting Social And Emotional Learning In The Efl/Esl Classroom: How The New Science Of Child Development Can Inform Second Language Acquisition Theory And Practice, Matthew Nall
Journal of English Learner Education
Research in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) generally falls within two categories: the cognitive/psycholinguistic camp, and the sociocultural camp (Fazel, 2014). These distinct approaches to empirical research in SLA have diverse epistemologies, methods, and implications for the second language classroom. Scholars within the sociocultural camp have made significant contributions to the field concerning social and emotional learning in the second language classroom. Concerning this, the current paper reviews recent developments in the field of developmental psychology and examines ways in which the new science of child development can inform SLA theory and practice in regard to social and …
Sel For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students, Sophie Cuocci, Rebeca Arndt
Sel For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students, Sophie Cuocci, Rebeca Arndt
Journal of English Learner Education
There is abundant research about the benefits of SEL programs on social and emotional core competencies (e.g., increase in self-esteem, improvement of academic performance); however, general SEL programs are not necessarily designed with the English learners’ (ELs) needs in mind. Aiming at exploring valid and reliable SEL programs that meet the needs of the ELs, the article first examines the theoretical groundwork on which SEL is built upon. Next, this paper will first discuss Piaget’s, Vygotsky’s, and Dörnyei’s theories surrounding the cognitive, emotional, and sociocultural aspects involved in the learning process and language learning. It will then consider the needs …

Twine And The Challenge To Reading, Stuart Moulthrop
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
The article considers the Twine story-game platform in relation to important critiques of earlier forms of electronic literature (specifically hypertext) from which it descends. Arguments for the significance of Twine are made based on aesthetic approaches (the fusion of literature and game culture) and the refinement of writing itself.
Electronic Writing As Hypermaterial Playground, Michael B. Heidt
Electronic Writing As Hypermaterial Playground, Michael B. Heidt
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
The text examines e-lit’s potentials for reframing the question of digital materiality through playful poetic practice. To this end, the discussion reconstructs the genealogy between concrete poetry and electronic writing:
Digital structures, such as source code, programmable logic devices, neural networks, databases, and sensor readouts, accompany us continuously, yet remain annoyingly hard to fathom. Although we ceaselessly interact with them, it is hard for humans to relate to these materials, to shape or see them. However, as long as we allow the material reality of these structures to slip through the cracks of the collective imaginary, it remains easy for …
From Ai With Love: Reading Big Data Poetry Through Gilbert Simondon’S Theory Of Transduction, Andrew Klobucar
From Ai With Love: Reading Big Data Poetry Through Gilbert Simondon’S Theory Of Transduction, Andrew Klobucar
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
Computation initiated a far-reaching re-imagination of language, not just as an information tool, but as a social, bio-physical activity in general. Modern lexicology provides an important overview of the ongoing development of textual documentation and its applications in relation to language and linguistics. At the same time, the evolution of lexical tools from the first dictionaries and graphs to algorithmically generated scatter plots of live online interaction patterns has been surprisingly swift. Modern communication and information studies from Norbert Weiner to the present-day support direct parallels between coding and linguistic systems. However, most theories of computation as a model of …
Autopia And The Truelist: Language Combined In Two Computer-Generated Books, Nick Montfort
Autopia And The Truelist: Language Combined In Two Computer-Generated Books, Nick Montfort
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
Autopia (Troll Thread, 2016) and The Truelist (Counterpath, 2017) are computer-generated literary books. I reported at ELO 2014 on two of my text-generating “novel machines” (Montfort 2014). The two projects discussed in this paper are about novel-size, but are different sorts of projects. Autopia’s text consists of headline-style sentences made entirely of the singular and plural names of cars. This project manifests not only as a print-on-demand book from a post-digital publisher, but also as a web project and a gallery installation. The Truelist’s 140 pages of verse are available in offset printed book form and also as a …
Translating A Work Of Digital Literature Into Several Languages: A Case Study, Serge Bouchardon, Nohelia Meza
Translating A Work Of Digital Literature Into Several Languages: A Case Study, Serge Bouchardon, Nohelia Meza
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
In 2010, the digital literature piece Déprise was published online (http://deprise.fr). Progressively, it has been translated from French into English (Loss of Grasp, 2010), Italian (Perdersi, 2011), Spanish (Perderse, 2013), and Portuguese (Perda de controlo, 2016). Every translation required changes to the original version in French but also to the other versions, leading to an intercultural and multilingual dialogue between the translators and the author.
What are the specificities of the translation of digital literature in comparison to the translation of literature in general? What does translation teach us …
The Politicization Of Crime And Its Implications, Komysha Hassan
The Politicization Of Crime And Its Implications, Komysha Hassan
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
The relationship between law enforcement and the public has recently come under scrutiny after a number of high-profile deaths of African-Americans at the hands of police officers. The ensuing public outcry has given way to a wide-ranging debate about the origins of such tension and why it has continued to manifest with such vigor despite apparent progress. This research attempts to uncover the underpinnings of this tension through a historical review of the development of the law enforcement institution and the narrative of crime in society. Specifically, this research investigates the role of federalization and politicization on crime and its …
Anatomy And Function Of Autonomic Innervation Of The Liver, Kennan Negrete
Anatomy And Function Of Autonomic Innervation Of The Liver, Kennan Negrete
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
The liver is one of the most important regulatory organs, and its extensive influence upon homeostatic balance is well-documented. However, the role of autonomic innervation in the control and regulation of hepatic function is poorly understood relative to the other organs of the digestive system. Furthermore, the neuroanatomical layout of the liver remains an incomplete puzzle with various missing pieces. The scarcity of information concerning such a critical organ presents an interesting conundrum for the scientific and biomedical communities alike, especially given the prevalence of liver degeneracy and disease in the modern clinical setting. A more complete understanding of the …
Oyster Reef Restoration: Impacts On Infaunal Communities In A Shallow Water Estuary, Katherine Harris
Oyster Reef Restoration: Impacts On Infaunal Communities In A Shallow Water Estuary, Katherine Harris
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Oyster reefs are important estuarine ecosystems that provide habitats to many species, including threatened and endangered wading birds and commercially important fishes and crabs. Infaunal organisms (i.e. aquatic, sediment-dwelling organisms) are also supported by oyster reef habitats. Infaunal organisms are critical to oyster-based food webs and are consumed by many important estuarine species. Due to their critical role in coastal food webs, infauna are hypothesized to be strong indicators of habitat productivity. With the dramatic global loss of intertidal oyster reefs, organisms that depend on oyster reef infauna are likely negatively impacted. Fortunately, oyster reef restoration is currently underway in …

Studying The Effects Of Predatory Presence And Enrichment On Cryptoprocta Ferox Behavior, Julie Sharpe
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
The Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens houses two fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox), a male and a female. C. ferox is an endangered species of Malagasy mongoose from the island of Madagascar. In October of 2018, an amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) was moved across from the male and female C. ferox. This study was used to identify if the presence of P. p. orientalis would affect the stereotypic pacing behavior of the female C. ferox. Staff were also curious about the impact of daily-renewed enrichment on the frequency of pacing in the female. Our …
