Mexican Resemblances In The Southeastern Area Of The United States, Doris Stone
Mexican Resemblances In The Southeastern Area Of The United States, Doris Stone
Florida Historical Quarterly
The Indians who have inhabited this region belong to various groups, some of which have migrated hither in historical times (as the Shawnee). The most important are the Muskogian tribes, of which the Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, and Natchez are members. However, we find isolated tribes belonging to the large northern and eastern groups of Iroquois and Algonquin Indians, as well as Siouan from the Great Plains, and several less important peoples who came into this area from the Ohio valley.
The Florida Militia And The Affair At Withlacoochee, Samuel E. Cobb
The Florida Militia And The Affair At Withlacoochee, Samuel E. Cobb
Florida Historical Quarterly
Many varied types of organizations, generally spoken of as the militia, came into existence during the Seminole wars in Florida. They ranged from ephemeral units, organized for a particular purpose and at a particular time which were disbanded after a retaliatory attack had been made on the Indians, or the raiding Indians had been dispersed to the fairly well organized military unit, mobilized under the authority of the territorial and national governments and attached to the Federal army.

The Tekesta Indians Of Southern Florida, John Mann Groggin
The Tekesta Indians Of Southern Florida, John Mann Groggin
Florida Historical Quarterly
The Tekesta Indians at the time of the discovery of America occupied a portion of southeastern Florida. This area seems to have comprised the greater part of Dade county and possibly to have extended north to Pompano in Broward county. To the south toward Cape Sable it is difficult to tell where the boundary between the Calusa and the Tekesta was, although Barcia says there was a Tekesta village named Abayoa at the southern extremity of the Florida peninsula (probably Cape Sable). (Barcia, Ensayo 2, bibliography, post). However, archaeological evidence seems to indicate that sites about Cape Sable are more …
The Timucua Indians Of Sixteenth Century Florida, W. W. Ehrmann
The Timucua Indians Of Sixteenth Century Florida, W. W. Ehrmann
Florida Historical Quarterly
When first visited by the Spanish explorers in the early sixteenth century, northern Florida was inhabited by the Timucua family of Indians. Their territory was bounded approximately on the west by the Aucilla River, on the north by a line running just north of the present Georgia-Florida state line from the Aucilla River on the west to Cumberland Island on the east, and on the south by a line extending from Tampa Bay to Cape Canaveral.
Governor Johnstone In West Florida, C. N. Howard
Governor Johnstone In West Florida, C. N. Howard
Florida Historical Quarterly
The first letters and reports of Major Farmar upon the new province, West Florida, and the conduct of the military administration were received in the early spring by the secretary at war and, in due course, were forwarded to the new governor, George Johnstone, at his London house in Half- Moon street. The papers came from the secretary at war to the office of the secretary of state for the southern department. After inspection, they were returned to the secretary at war.
The Relationship Of Florida Archaeology To That Of Middle America, Doris Stone
The Relationship Of Florida Archaeology To That Of Middle America, Doris Stone
Florida Historical Quarterly
Florida, as we all know, is a low coastal plain having as its principal element a limestone base, with its share of swamps and soft adhering mud which covers easily and in certain cases preserves. On the east and west coasts the environmental conditions differ from each other and from the peninsula itself, as well as from the entire southeastern area to which anthropologically it belongs, and from the rest of North America. On the western coast are the shell keys and coral reefs and not far distant on the eastern side, in addition to a few reefs, lie the …

The St. Augustine Historical Restoration, Eleanor Beeson
Florida Historical Quarterly
The St. Augustine Historical Restoration conducted under the auspices of Carnegie Institution of Washington with the cooperation of the City of St. Augustine is dedicated to the purpose of preserving and redeveloping the physical remains of the centuries of history of this region, site of the first permanent white settlement on the Atlantic seaboard, thereby creating a beautiful national shrine where the meaning of the great events embodied in these monuments will be understandable.
The St. Joseph Convention: The Making Of Florida’S First Constitution, F. W. Hoskins
The St. Joseph Convention: The Making Of Florida’S First Constitution, F. W. Hoskins
Florida Historical Quarterly
At the time of its cession to the United States in 1821 Florida’s white population was probably about five thousand. There were only two towns, or settlements, of any importance in the territory, and they were near four hundred miles apart. Considering that, with one exception, Florida was the largest territory or State east of the Mississippi river, it can be imagined what an undeveloped country it must have been; remember too that the interior of the peninsula was yet unexplored and its geography unknown.
Expedition Of Marcos Delgado, 1686, Mark F. Boyd
Expedition Of Marcos Delgado, 1686, Mark F. Boyd
Florida Historical Quarterly
By the time the Franciscan fathers began their conversion of the Indians in Apalache in 1633, Spain as a world power had long been in decline. Other European governments recognized the growing impotency, and several, including England and France, had begun to seize territory within the limits claimed by Spain across the Atlantic. After the early aggressions in the West Indies, the Spanish authorities in dread of further encroachments that might seriously threaten the security of their hold on New Spain, became, concerned over the extension of French interests in the interior of the continent and were alarmed when news …
The Battle Of Olustee (Ocean Pond) Florida, George F. Baltzell
The Battle Of Olustee (Ocean Pond) Florida, George F. Baltzell
Florida Historical Quarterly
This account of the battle of Olustee has been prepared at the invitation of the Florida Historical Society from the reports contained in War of the Rebellion, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. A careful study of this source leaves one unsatisfied where the aim has been to arrive at definite facts of such nature as would enable a fairly complete record to be offered. It is undoubtedly true that these official records must give more accurate and complete information than any others, since the reports were generally made within a few days after the events occurred and …
United States Troops In Spanish East Florida, 1812-13 Part Iii, T. Frederick Davis
United States Troops In Spanish East Florida, 1812-13 Part Iii, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
This series of papers comprising the correspondence of Lieut. Col. Thomas A. Smith, commander of the detachment of U. S. regulars that invaded Spanish East Florida in March, 1812, began in the July, 1930, issue of THE QUARTERLY, which should be consulted for an explanation as to why the American troops invaded the Spanish province; and also for the details concerning the discovery of these important Florida records.

An Indian Attack Of 1856 On The Home Of Willoughby Tillis, James Dallas Tillis
Florida Historical Quarterly
This narrative was dictated to the assistant editor of the QUARTERLY by James Dallas Tillis in October, 1929. Perhaps none now living, other than Mr. Tillis, have seen a hostile Seminole Indian.
The Seminole Indians Of Florida, Minnie Moore-Willson
The Seminole Indians Of Florida, Minnie Moore-Willson
Florida Historical Quarterly
Looking backwards for nearly two centuries we see a band of red Americans, who are to become the Seminoles, separate themselves from the Creek Confederacy of Georgia and Alabama and cross the boundary into Florida. Subjects now of the Spanish crown, they become a nation to themselves, and under the sunny skies of the peninsular establish their golden-rule tribal government-characterized throughout by independence, kindliness, and honor.
Macgregor’S Invasion Of Florida, T. Frederick Davis
Macgregor’S Invasion Of Florida, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
Gregor MacGregor was the grandson of Gregor MacGregor, the Scotchman, who enlisted in the Black Watch, then Semphill’s Highlanders, and was called in Gaelic “Gregor, the Beautiful.” When the regiment was first ordered to England, in 1743, “Gregor, the Beautiful” and two others were sent on in advance to London, so that the king of England, who was on the point of starting for the continent, might see some soldiers of the regiment before leaving. One of the men died en route, but MacGregor and the other were paraded before the king at St. James’s and gave an exhibition of …

The Ruins Of Fort San Luis Near Tallahassee, Venila Lovina Shores
Florida Historical Quarterly
In western Florida there are many places of historic interest whose physical remains have been obliterated by the action of the elements, and the memory of man may have long since ceased to know them. Now and then the student searching historical material finds bits of information left by the pens of long ago concerning them. Here are some of these fragments relating to Fort San Luis.
Ocala Prior To 1868, Eloise Robinson Ott
Ocala Prior To 1868, Eloise Robinson Ott
Florida Historical Quarterly
Uncommonly colorful in its historical background, Ocala, the seat of justice of Marion county, held a position of unique importance among the towns of central Florida in the early days of our statehood. Among the older settlements and so situated geographically that through it must pass the pioneers pressing southward its influence was soon felt, for interwoven with its sturdy agricultural and industrial progress we find the glamour of a social life that left lasting impress upon educational and political activities throughout a large part of the State.

Letters Of Lieutenant John W. Phelps, U.S.A., 1837-1838, John W. Phelps
Florida Historical Quarterly
Lieut. John Walcott Phelps (Brig.-Gen., Vols. 1861) of Vermont, served in the Seminole War during 1837, 1838 and 1839. Following these, a score of letters will be published here written by Samuel Forry, Surgeon, U. S. A., to Lieut. Phelps from various forts in Florida during the campaigns of 1837 and 1838. The originals of both series are in the possession of John W. Phelps, of Northfield, Massachusetts, a son of General Phelps; who, through Mrs. Roy V. Ott, of Ocala, has given The Florida Historical Society copies and permission to publish them. A biographical sketch of Lieut. Phelps will …
Notes On The Origin Of The Seminole Indians Of Florida, Frank Drew
Notes On The Origin Of The Seminole Indians Of Florida, Frank Drew
Florida Historical Quarterly
The settlement of the Seminole Indians in Florida has been entirely within the historical period. They were renegade Creeks (Muskokis) from Georgia, who invaded Florida following the raids made by the English under Governor Moore, of South Carolina, beginning in 1702. Moore drove the Timuquanas who inhabited the northern part of Florida (extending far southward) to the protection of the forts at St. Augustine.

Hp Windows Mixed Reality Vs Meta 2: Investigating Differences In Workload And Usability For A Ball-Sorting Task, Joseph Pruitt, Melissa Marques, Hannah Singer, Amber Blatchford
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Perceived workload and usability are crucial components of human-computer interactions. Currently, there is a gap in research comparing Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) systems for workload and usability. This study attempts to bridge that gap through the comparison of the HP Windows Mixed Reality system and the Meta 2 system for a ball-sorting task. Subjective questionnaires on workload and usability were implemented as comparative measures for three game scenarios of increasing difficulty. Forty-one participants were recruited from the University of Central Florida and its surrounding communities. Results showed significantly lower cumulative total workload and greater usability (for the …
Effects Of Varying Heat Indexes On Habitat Utilization And Behavior On Captive Red-Ruffed Lemurs (Varecia Rubra), Jeffrey Gammon
Effects Of Varying Heat Indexes On Habitat Utilization And Behavior On Captive Red-Ruffed Lemurs (Varecia Rubra), Jeffrey Gammon
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
The two captive red-ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra) at the Central Florida Zoo experienced a more temperate climate and utilized a differing habitat than they would in their native range, Madagascar. Proper management of the species in captivity is crucial for its long-term survival as they are critically endangered. Over a four month period, heat index temperature, lemur behavior, and habitat utilization data were collected via an instantaneous scan sample. Variables were analyzed to characterize how variations in heat index alter habitat utilization and behavior of the captive lemurs. As the heat index increased, habitat use became more restricted …

Behavioral Analysis Of The Cryptoprocta Ferox In An Ex-Situ Condition, Emilie Alfonso
Behavioral Analysis Of The Cryptoprocta Ferox In An Ex-Situ Condition, Emilie Alfonso
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Fossas (Cryptoprocta ferox) are the top, endemic predators of Madagascar. Their populations are dwindling and are reported as “Vulnerable” by IUCN. In an effort to combat this, zoological facilities have placed the species on a captive breeding program. This study focuses on concerns one of those zoos had about their captive C. ferox. The purpose of this study was to collect activity budgets on the C. ferox to determine if there is a change in behavior due to construction occurring around the C. ferox’s habitat, analyze behavior changes during estrus, determine any behavior changes, as well …
Observational Study Of Two Ex Situ North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis), Julia Rifenberg
Observational Study Of Two Ex Situ North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis), Julia Rifenberg
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Zoos enable the ability to study how captive conditions impact the behaviors of animals. In this study, I observed two North American river otters housed at the Central Florida Zoo to evaluate behavioral changes after the male had been removed from the female for a month-long medical examination. The aim of this study was to 1) determine if mating behaviors were still occurring between the two river otters following the male’s removal and 2) to assess the welfare of the male and female river otters in captivity by observing their interactions and individual behaviors. Observed behaviors were compared to documented …

Super Bowl Lv, Richard C. Crepeau
Super Bowl Lv, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Super Bowl LV has come and gone and it will forever occupy a unique place in the History of the NFL. The game itself was a throwback to many earlier games that simply did not live up to the hype. What was billed as a great matchup that was likely to be won by whomever had the last possession of the game, turned out to be a lop-sided contest decided by halftime, or at the latest, the middle of the third quarter.
Personality Patterns In Psychopathology: An Examination Of Lower-Order Personality Facets, Depression, And Anxiety, Tori Jansen
Personality Patterns In Psychopathology: An Examination Of Lower-Order Personality Facets, Depression, And Anxiety, Tori Jansen
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Past research concerning personality and psychological disorders have focused predominantly on higher- order personality traits. However, investigating the lower order facets of personality traits may reveal unique aspects of psychological disorders. Participants were asked to complete a survey evaluating the relationships between symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Social Anxiety Disorder. Associations between these disorders and positive and negative affect were also investigated. This study revealed numerous associations between each of the disorders and various facets compiling each trait. Of particular interest are the links found between facets of Agreeableness and Openness to Experience and all three …

Post-Judgment Recovery And Its Effectuation On The Contemporary Debtors' Prison: A Treble Analysis On Collections Law In The State Of Florida, Andrew E. Weiner
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper will analyze the conflict between creditors’ inherent right for satisfaction of their outstanding monetary judgments and the difficulties that debtors confront in satisfying the outstanding award levied against them. To establish the theory that the civil justice system has “resuscitated” the antebellum debtors’ prison and infringed upon principles of civil liberties, this paper will examine evidence in a three-pronged analysis of economics, history, and a reflection on the American legal systems.
